Jerryd Bayless Renounced by Raptors, Will Become Unrestricted Free Agent

A day after trading for point guard Kyle Lowry, the Toronto Raptors today renounced their qualifying offer to guard Jerryd Bayless, making him an unrestricted free agent. SB Nation has the details: “The Raptors still could sign Bayless again, but he is now an unrestricted free agent and can freely sign a contract elsewhere without the Raptors being able to match it. A former first-round pick, Bayless has bounced around the league during his four-year career. He had a breakout season for the Raptors last year when he was on the court, averaging 11.4 points per game as a sixth man while shooting over 42 percent from three-point range. However, various injuries limited him to just 31 games on the year.”

I expect him to go to Dallas.

I absolutely hate this. I have watched Bayless throughout his entire career and as a Raptors fan, was ecstatic when we picked him up. He showed flashes of brilliance last season prior to that hip injury. I hope he returns to Toronto but as a fan of his would be glad to see him get a better opportunity to succeed.

Lol the Raptors are a useless organization!

    Good move Raps.

@Shem: to me, his flashes of brilliance were limited to the few possessions when he could iso someone. He’s a talented scorer, but not talented enough to take over and without the size necessary to play D, and his court vision/passing are adequate only for a third-string PG.

    “Renounced” just sounds so horrible.

i hate to use the B word on bayless, he seems to be good enough for a lottery pick but his flashes of brilliance are far few in between.

per 36 minutes Bayless put up 18Points, 6 Assists, 3 rebounds, and a steal on 42%-42%-85% from the field – and he’s only 23. In the little minutes he is getting he’s shown he can and might be a pretty good player.

@NBK: the sample size is really low there (if I’m not mistaken he played in just over 30 games), and it’s always tricky to project production per, for example, 36 minutes when you’re talking about a bench player. Even so, looking at those stats: he’s also never shot above 43% (even though part of that can be blamed on 3-point shooting), and he fouls a lot (that D again). He would be a nice pickup for a team that’s prepared to test whether he can build on the good parts of last year’s production, but I think the Raps did well to let him go.

Looks like Calderon won’t get amnestied any time soon.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

idk, my thinking is, he’s going to be better than Calderon as soon as he starts seeing the floor (he put up 11PPG in 20 minutes this season, and his production has been around that level per minute his whole career) he’s not the playmaker Calderon is but he is definitely a better defender. I don’t think he’s going to be an all star by any stretch, but he’s going to be a good player. I could be wrong, but I’m pretty sure Toronto decided to keep Calderon and renounce Bayless is because of Calderon’s expiring contract and it’s value in a trade and the fact that renouncing Bayless would not cost them anything. The team is working on getting a more consistent wing (hearing Iguodala) in a package around Derozan. Calderon can be used to absorb Iguodala’s contract, or to help the trading team include a contract they want to rid themselves of. It’s not actually about them preferring the PG’s they have.

Perhaps it’s ignorance on my part but how much of a window do teams have to renounce a qualifying offer? I’m pretty sure Toronto might want to get the offer they made to fields of the table . . That’s big money right there.

jarred bayless is like a micheal beasly in PG form imo… he shows he can be great he just needs to get over that last hump. i was just watching the Raptors vs Grizzlies(ZRandophs first game back) game in review and he was great when given the miniutes… sucks to see him possibly go

Dacre, I believe until July 11

I doubt Raps will pull their offer for Fields. It would make them a lot of enemies in the agent world.

    Lol truth hurts.

Jason Gardener, Salim Stoudamire, Marcus Williams, Jordan Hill, Hassan Adams, Channing Frye, Derrick Williams, Jaryd Bayless. All Zona Wildcats. All had great NCAA numbers. All busts. All since 2005. Seeya Bayless, I didnt have any hope for u when u signed because Colangelo signed you.

  • anonymous

Sry forgot to add that jury’s still out on D Williams career, hes not a bust yet. And Frye had one good year with Nash, but everyone has a good year with Nash.

  • RickM20

    anonymous…you forgot Luke Walton!

Would love to see him back in Portland. He showed promise out here. We’ll see though….

Every other young PG is off the table. Do you take Darren Collison or Bayliss as a starting PG for this season??

    * hypothetical situation *

and ray allen has finally agreed to join the miami heat

  • iknowmybasketball

jerryd bayless to the celtics anyone? they could use a serviceable PG who would learn a thing or two behind rondo and the vets

  • north

I’m with nbk all the way on this… they only renounced Bayless because it’s clear that NO ONE in the league wants Calderon (Money is already locked up with him). The real fans in TO don’t want Jose, just the ones who think Leo Rautins knows something about basketball. BC isn’t Jerry, I think that’s super clear now. We hired the wrong Coangelo! Keep Bayless, hypnotize someone into taking Jose and we have a team for the future with DeRozan, Ross, Valanciunas, Davis and Lowry. At least we would have a direction, something that we haven’t had in 8 seasons.

  • Anti Rob

Just to point something out; you can’t really project stats from limited MPG. The bench player is likely playing against another backup, which would in some (most?) cases mean a poorer defender. Also, if a player knows he is going to be playing in a part time role, he can be much more aggressive, and not have to worry about conserving energy. I hate taking a 15 MPG player and projecting to per 36; often doesn’t translate.

Man, bring him to Houston if Knicks match Lin’s offer; they have nobody to start at point guard over Bayless. Give the guy a chance! Go back and compare the stats between Lowry at age 23 (coming off the bench) and Bayless at 23 last season, Bayless has better numbers across the board. This guy can still be an elite PG if given the chance, dude can straight up ball.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

I like that idea omphalos… Houston desperately needs a point guard. But I think they should throw money at Darren Collison first. Dork Elvis really blew this off-season, what a dumb@ss. No more defending him from me–he’s a cheap idiot who is only willing to fork over dough for superstars he will not get to trade for.
@ north: I like that idea too. Just make sure Bargnani is shipped out to ANYWHERE ELSE BUT TORONTO and that’s a fine looking team.

Derrick Williams aint a bust “anonymous”
