Joe Johnson Thinks it Won’t Take Long for the Nets to Win a Championship

Newly-minted Brooklyn Net Joe Johnson continues to talk up a storm before a single dribble has been taken. After claiming that Brooklyn has the best NBA team in NYC — an unpopular stance among Knicks players – Johnson tells the NY Post that it shouldn’t be very long until Nets fans are celebrating an NBA championship: “Q: Why did you say the Nets are better than the Knicks? A: ‘The Brooklyn Nets have to have swag, and it starts with confidence. You can’t go out hoping and wishing, but you have to know and feel that way before you take the court. I think we should all feel that we’re a pretty good damn team.’ Q: How long will it take for you to help bring a championship to Brooklyn? A: ‘Honestly, not long. I think we got some great pieces to put us in position to win a title, honestly. … This could be probably the best team I’ve ever played on.’”

how about you just try to get to the playoffs joe?

The whole Atlanta community, teammates and management want to ask Joe Johnson this question. Where was this fire playing in the playoffs in ATL.

  • L Dribble

At least he didn’t say he was going to win 8 championships.

  • bike

In glacial formation timeframes, it did not “take long” for the ice age to come and go.

@L Dribble – Lebron saying 8 with the Big 3 is probably equivalent to Joe Johnson saying one with the current Nets. Either way, someone should’ve told them both to pump their brakes a little

  • L Dribble

    ^^^ good point.

I remember CWebb making fun of this dude for being a silent superstar… Guess that changed when you’ve Jay-Z & Co. riding with you…

  • wixursss

who is Joe Johnson???? oh wait. That guy. It’s a shame Mitch Richmond never got a deal like Joe Johnson. He deserved it more.

I’m surprised to see Joe talking this much, but honestly he’s ALWAYS been crazy confident. People just didn’t ask him that many questions in Atlanta, but when he did talk he always spoke like he had a lot of confidence in his talent.
If they get Dwight, these comments make a lot more sense though.

Seriously? Nets going to win a championship because of Joe Johnson? I’m a season ticket holder for the Hawks, and this is the most fired up I have ever seen him. 13-15 points a game in the playoffs, making 25 million….garbage. I used to be a big fan, but dude is just a good 2nd tier player, not a superstar, never will be.

@wix Joe got the contract he deserved. The market value for borderline superstars in 2010 (an inflated market) was a max deal. He was playing at an all star level. He received a contract equal to his market value.

Can’t see them beating the Heat.

  • ALD

Yea, where was his fire when he was i ATL?! Its all good though…Now he’ll try harder to avoid looking like a dumba$$… Makes for better basketball…

  • pposse

can you all stop talking about the contract these players deserved and what the “market” was dictating? The only reason why the “market” would dictate any such contracts is because there are 29 other GM’s/Owners that say this is how much one player deserves and/or another player deserves. There is no goddamn economic indicator in the NBA that is reported on the NASDAQ or written out on college textbooks. When a market value is determined by 30 owners and not the rest of the world, then you have to look at the 30owners /owning groups in the league and come to the conclusion that they all are idiots – anyone willing to make Joe Johnson the highest paid ball player in the league (or second) is beyond dumb, it has nothing to do with market value and everything to do with stupidity amongst owners and gm’s.

  • pposse

its real simple..if you are a top of the line ball player you deserve around 20 million a year….if you are good/all star level ball player you deserve anywhere from 12-15 million a year. Mid level contracts should be like 3-9 million a year and the rest of the ballers should be happy making what they get. And for the creme de la creme, that person can expect 25-30 million a year.

  • pposse

is jj bipolar?? I dont get it, why do so many ballers go to NY and then all of a sudden explode out of their shell and become huge smack talkers all of a sudden. As the newly knick member Tim Thomas would say, “JJ is fughazi”

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    PPosse
Your market is set by the people interested in your services. Wall Street just keeps track of certain markets, but using the term “market value” is valid when discussing the NBA.

  • Jre

Barely said 5 words when he was in Tha A….Now he wanna talk?
    Glad he Gone

  • ALD

crabs in a bucket man smh…….. ppl who hate his contract act like he stole it out your bank account…. Plus do ya really think JJ is goin around talking trash because he wants to? He answering the questions presented in a way the organization wants him to. Why wouldnt he say this.

  • ALD

And is sounds like a lot of ATL fans are butt hurt. HAHAHAHA … Fools

  • Fat Lever

Well if Prokorov gets his KGB buddies together and Lebron and KD “mysteriously” disappear, then JJ may be right.

  • CaptainKirk

    what a noob move

    LMFAO Are U Serious.

    “could be probably the best”.
    Crazy confident!

  • http://slam flight9

@FATlever… I hope they do it. i like your suggestion dude!!!!!!

  • Valkyrie

PPosee, it’s real simple. The market is the NBA. Your Wall St referencee makes no sense. Basic economics courses would’ve solved your confusion. It wouldn’t matter if the league was 5 teams, it’s still a market in which teams compete to sign talent, and players negotitate the highest price possible for their services. If I sold fruit at a farmer’s market, that farmer’s market is a “market”. The term market only means that specific area of business, whether the companies are publicly traded or not. For example, there is a market for CEO talent in every field from banking to technology. Execs get paid minimally by market value, and more depending on negotiations. Companies compete for talent. “Wall street” (the idea not the actual location) isn’t itself a market. Nor is any stock exchange. NASDAQ, NYSE, etc all monitor various markets such as tech companies, treasuries, oil trading. Within those markets, they monitor various publicly traded companies.
