Lakers, Rockets Both in Contact With Magic About Dwight Howard Trade

Dwight Howard seems to be pretty upset with the Magic these days, and Orlando’s front office may have finally accepted that they’ll have to move the big man before the season begins. We already knew the Nets have been semi-interested (they may just drop the idea and go after Joe Johnson, reports have said), but Yahoo! Sports reports that the Magic have now been in contact with both the Lakers and Rockets (separately) for a potential deal: “The Los Angeles Lakers and Orlando Magic have had preliminary contact about a possible deal for All-Star center Dwight Howard, league sources told Yahoo! Sports. Orlando officials are willing to discuss trades for Howard, and the Lakers have been one of the teams in touch with them over the weekend, sources said. The Brooklyn Nets and Houston Rockets have also talked to Magic officials, sources said. While the Lakers have yet to make a direct offer, there’s no scenario where Orlando would move Howard to the Lakers without getting back Andrew Bynum, L.A.’s 24-year-old All-Star center. Pau Gasol wouldn’t fit the Magic’s desires to rebuild with young players and draft picks. The Lakers had been willing to part with Bynum for Howard in March, but those talks ended when Howard decided to decline his early termination option and remain under contract through the 2012-13 season.”

If I’m orlando, I’m saying yes to LA. You get back a young good center with a reasonable contract, I’m taking it. At this point, you do what’s best for the franchise

  • nbahofer

yo man its obvious by now that punk as$ Dwight Coward doesn’t wanna play for the legendary purp n gold so buck em let him play wherever he wants acting like L.O just play the game you love n get paid mills to play n just win and have faith in your organization to put the right players around u to succeed

Interesting reports flying around the plays these days….you got some articles saying that Howard wants to force Orlando’s hand and send him only to the new Nets squad (which incidentally are going to land BOTH Jason Kidd and Deron Williams…?) and then articles like this where multiple teams are in conversation…(Houson seem to really want to upgrade that front line and will move any of their players?!).

I think every time the Lakers are mentioned in one of these salacious reports, a little piece of Pau Gasol’s large soft heart dies…

Houston is trying hard to get a star, but they dont have a chance if the Lakers are willing to offer Bynum.

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

@ MirChilly – And from Andrew Bynum’s side, the starting C on the East Allstar team is his to lose. I think he would do really well in the Eastern conference actually.

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

@ Mackn’31 – Houston are just straight up flirting with everyone… ‘have anyone?!’

If I’m to he Magic, I would test how badly Dwight wants out of Orlando and hold out until I get equal value for him. The “Dwight to any team for less value” will be there today, next month, six months from now. If you stare down Howarde long enough, he will blink.

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

I really thought they would try to move Pau before they moved Bynum… but I guess you attract more flies with honey.

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

If I’m the Magic {in which, in a parallel universe humans take on business entities in bodily form…}, I DO NOT settle for moving Dwight without getting back either A: 2 players, OR B: 1 star of ‘equal [ie market] value’ AND a draft pick for next year. You want to maximise on your return here.

The shame of it is that Dwight will play better where ever he ends up than if he stays in Orlando. His hearts not in it for the Magic anymore.

  • MirChilly

@ Darce… I think so too. With the east slower more physical tempo/style, he could flourish. Plus the shooters Orlando has will give him more one on one match ups. Also Orlando is getting no other player with the caliber and upside of Bynum for Dwight. This is a no brainer

  • Jono

I AM SO SICK OF THESE REPORTS!

  • Ben Ireland

I’m wondering, look at Cleaveland as an example, maybe say yes to Houston, get back a few good young players, maybe Lowry, Terrence Jones, Kevin Martin and Jeremy Lamb, tank the season and get a good draft pick, while letting all those guys play with no pressure to be stars. That way, if they could get a good player in the draft next year (maybe Nerlens Noel?) they could rebuild and contend in a few years. You gotta suck to get better and bar one Finals spanking, Dwight has taken them straight down the middle of the road, and then stayed there until they were run over by traffic for two seasons. Time to move on.

  • MirChilly

In terms of equal value, unless you can get back an athletic freak who can block 3 shots a game, get 20pts and 14rebs, you have to take the next best thing. Bynum is that. Bynum has two years left on his deal and it frees up salary cap room to get another player like OJ Mayo. Nelson, OJ, Hedo, Anderson and Bynum with Big Baby, JJ, Andrew and whoever else is a good team if you believe Bynum can become a great center. This is a Logical deal for orlando

  • http://Slamonline.com Captain Mar-Vell

First off I need be an nba gm

Howard and Anderson for Ibaka and harden
Howard and Anderson for d. Jordan and griffin
Howard and future 2nd round for tyreke and Demarcus
Howard for brook lopez Gerald Wallace.

  • http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pat_Riley Executive of the Year

Pick one: Dwight either has a low mental aptitude or he is a media whore. Why did he even sign the extension which in turn is dragging this drama out. Even when healthy did he really believe the big three of Howard, Nelson and Redick were going to compete for a title?

  • bdogg

would love to see dwight in purple and gold! i get he would like to play with d-will but playing a year or 2 with kobe and a chance at a ring…what is his problem? even he and d-will they do not get out of the east..period!

  • http://www.newyorkshockexchange.com Shock Exchange

    MirChilly,

What I meant by “equal value” was Bynum and Gasol. Jono, the reports are becoming a bit much. However, I think it’s hilarious that Orlando is “blackmailing” Howard by threatening to trade him to L.A. where he will be forced to shag Horry, Jr’s rebounds for the rest of his career.

  • wet

@Captain Mar-Veli…. you would be a terrible GM.

The only scenario of the 4 you mentioned that would work is the last one. The other’s wouldn’t give up those pieces, especially for 1 year of Howard.

I’m also fairly certain Wallace isn’t elgible to be traded since he just signed. And isn’t lopez a RFA?

  • MirChilly

Stock Exchange… If I’m the Lakers, I’m never including Gasol and Bynum. When they had Odom, maybe Gasol and Odom, but not Gasol and Bynum. That is actually overpriced for Dwight. Also the blackmail is hilarious! He was the genius who signed it. Even Deron Williams said it was dumb when he did that.

  • http://www.newyorkshockexchange.com Shock Exchange

    MirChilly,

Cool. Then you’re saying the Lakers don’t want Howard bad enough. Howard for Bynum is a “defacto admission” that the rest of the league is L.A.’s AAA farm team.

  • heyheyhey

I dont understand lakers…. they dont NEED dwight howard, andrew bynum can do everything he does PLUS make free throws. dam lakers, we need a point not howard

  • MirChilly

Stock… Historically it has been that way. If I’m orlando I make that deal. It’s the best on the market. If I’m LA, I say no. No need to get rid of an promising young big with a good contract. LA needs to figure out how to get wing players, not post guys. And the trade scenios the lakers and their fans throw out is hilarious

  • JUNKIE

why would la trade for dwight? Their problem isn’t their post players, it’s their ball movement and if dwight goes to the lakers he’s just going to be frustrated that kobe doesn’t pass to him

  • http://www.newyorkshockexchange.com Shock Exchange

    MirChilly,

At this point it comes down to which NBA GM is better at poker. There are only a few “game changers” in the league and Orlando is holding one (Howard). That gives them leverage. However, Howard wants out and Orlando doesn’t want him to exit and receive nothing in return. Therefor, Orlando’s “hand” has been exposed. If I’m the Magic GM I’ll risk losing my job before I risk being remembered as “the loser who traded Dwight Howard and got nothing in return.”

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

I think L.A. are thinking like most teams out there, and that is, if Dwight played for ANYONE else at this stage in his career arc, he would probably play a whole lot better. I personally think that Dwight is just sick of the same sights, I mean, there probably is only so much of Disney Land one can stand…

But again, what about from the LA camp…?? Does Kobe want someone else in there with him? Personally I would rather be giving the ball to Pau if I was Kobe, followed by Dwight, followed by Bynum. Thats not to say Bynum is a bad player…. just my preference…

What IF the Lakers could get a decent defender (Perkins/Ibaka type) that doesn’t want the ball so much??? EITHER Dwight or Bynum will want to get the ball way more than they currently do.

LA (and Orlando) have bigger problems with personality clashes than they are to say right now.
    REPORT THAT.

  • D Michael

Would Mkie Brown know how to use Howard with Pau and Kobe?
He couldn’t make it happen with Bynum

  • Sundance

Lakers really just needs sum guards…..

  • BaronVonCool

Forget Dwight Howard on the Lakers. The Lakers should go for DeMarcus Cousins or Tyreke Evans or both if possible. Everyone says Cousins is a headcase but can he can prolly inprove his game following Kobe’s work ethic or Evans can provide the help Kobe needs in the backcourt.

  • BallsDeep

That’s right HeyHeyHey, Bynum can do everything DH does, more even with the free throws, and lets face it he’s got way more post moves. Bynum is younger by 4 year and he’s not coming off back surgery, which could in fact be an ongoing thing, who knows? Bynum>DH

  • tpathi1

why in the world would LA want to trade Bynum for Howard..they have the tools right now to be a defensive juggernaut

  • http://thosefishtacosareforwinners.blogspot.com Chris_Griff_3

Orlando should just wait until Free Agency plays out completely, and then amnesty Dwight. Let him miss out on signing a max deal with a contender.

  • http://thosefishtacosareforwinners.blogspot.com Chris_Griff_3

They should just bench him for the season until they get a respectable deal. Let the team learn how to play outside of him.

  • NuSchool

I don’t know if the Lakers would work . Mike Brown is not a proper coach and Kobe isn’t a team player if we wanna get right down to it. Without Phil “Action” Jackson at the Helm I don’t see the lakers winning even with Dwight .
