NBA to Place Ads on Jerseys, Implement Extended Replay

As had been expected for some time now, the NBA will begin placing advertisements on jerseys next season. The League’s Board of Governors also elected to expand the use of in-game replay. Per ESPN: “Next season, we’ll see an expansion of instant replay. All flagrant foul calls will go for immediate review to determine whether they constitute a ‘Flagrant 1,’ the more egregious ‘Flagrant 2,’ or a garden-variety foul. During the last two minutes of regulation and the entirety of overtime, officials will consult video to confirm the accuracy of a goaltending call and to determine whether a defender was inside or outside the restricted area on a block/charge call. Video replay has been part of the NBA since 2002, and the league has been making more situations eligible for replay at a steady pace over the past few years. Most fans probably won’t detect a radical change to the pace and contour of an NBA game with these additional three events added to the mix, but another likely change might jolt them: Come fall, it’s highly likely you’ll see a small 2-inch-by-2-inch sponsorship patch stitched on the shoulder of your favorite player’s game jersey. ‘I think it’s likely that we’ll do something, implement something, some sort of plan for the fall,’ NBA deputy commissioner Adam Silver said. ‘I think it’s fair to say that our teams were excited about the opportunity and think there is potentially a big opportunity in the marketplace to put a two-by-two patch on the shoulder of our jerseys.’ How big an opportunity? In 2010, the 20 teams in the English Premier League generated $178 million in revenue from shirt sponsorships. Granted, a 2-by-2 insignia probably won’t fetch anywhere near what an EPL team gets for draping a sponsor’s logo seam-to-seam across the chest of its players, at least not initially. But even a fraction of $178 million has to be enticing to NBA owners. ‘Our view is we think, on an aggregate basis, league-wide, our 30 teams could generate in total $100 million by selling that patch on jerseys, per season,’ Silver said.”

    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Tobiath

So be it, if it helps teams stay financially secure then it can only be a good thing. The EPL and lower leagues in English football survive, in large part, because of sponsorships and payments from SKY for the tv rights, why should the NBA stop their teams from benefitting from such a valuable revenue stream?

  • Heals

After a couple seasons we probably won’t even notice them…

  • http://slamonline.com StuBaby

It’s going to be a while before I buy another jersey.

  • Honduran

    Oh please god no

  • RunNGun

I’m all for replay but ads on jerseys? If they’re on the actual player issued, game worn jersey and not the authentic and/or replicas that are sold to fans, I’m fine with it. However, if they’re sold as is, then the NBA can go fcuk themselves! And if that’s the case, it’s time to buy a jersey now before they get FUGLY.

  • ClydeSays

I would guarantee that the fan jerseys will feature the patches. Ever looked at any ‘authentic’ soccer jersey? The sponsor names/patches are front & center. I think the NBA sponsor patches will be more subtle, but we’ll see. Run out & get your jerseys now before they have a big “BP” or “Microsoft” patch in the middle of them…

  • awkwardAARON

YES. FINALLY GOING TO HAVE A DENVER McNUGGETS JERSEY !

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

    People still buy jerseys?
Looks like Stern is hell bent on ruining the L on his way out.

  • L Dribble

Can’t wait to get my Gilbert Arenas jersey with NRA logo.

  • http://www.slamonline.com spit hot fiyah

so many jokes to made with players and jersey adds….

  • timbo slice

if the owners donated a portion of that 100 million dollars to advance basketball programs in countries that dont have them and was used properly to help small market teass stable then id be all for it, however i think its more likely that the extra income will be used to buy an astounding number of expensive dinners and champagne for the greedy owners

  • http://nba.com GP23

Well you can all, like me, buy the old school hardwood classic jerseys. I have ‘em all -
    Maravich
    Chamberlain
    Johnson
    Jordan
    West
    Bird
They don’t have any sponsors on. Just sayin’

  • ratguts

@Heals After a couple seasons they will be 5″x5″. A few seasons later we’ll have teams like “Pepsi Nuggets”.

  • LA Huey

Still didn’t address the flopping epidemic, I see. At least they got the replay on flagrants right.

  • http://www.champs.com Reggie06

Cant suck it all up since the nba going to be just like euroleage which is a bad comparison

  • http://www.champs.com Reggie06

    BTW
The adds are going to ruin the jerseys i think its disrespectful against the nba history and future hall of famers playing i mean what would you think about when you see subway or burgerking logo on knicks jerseys smh

  • Basketball iQ

^^ flopping is apart of the game, get over it^^

I’m glad they finally did the ads on jerseys bc now these owners can stop crying broke & raising the price of one hotdog w/cheese = to a 2 steaks out the grocery store, hell put the logos/ads cross the while jersey if it can get them crybabies out the red. Beer, 10$? Hurry up.

I wish I could make my car look like an official nascar w/all those stickers & ads, why not my nba jersey?

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=woWqSmichOo RunNGun

I can’t wait to see a gargantuan logo of Burger King on someone’s shorts (like Anderson Silva).

  • Mr. Goattree

I’ve been on the fence about not buying anymore jerseys ever again (I’ve got a white Orlando #12, red Toronto #4 and Cleveland #23 all gathering dust in my basement), and this is the final straw to break the camels back!

I think it will help bring in revenue for the league, but jersey sales to fans will drop.

  • dungeon family

Chris Bosh’s Jersey will either have a Summer’s eve logo or a Kotex logo on his.

  • dungeon family

Amare will have a “in case of Fire Break” logo on his

  • dungeon family

Melo will have the Yoo-hoo rabbit on his

  • dungeon family

Kobe My boy but he’ll have a Do Not pass street sign on his

  • justin05

I’m going to boycott whichever companies brand the jerseys next season. Stupid. Before you know it guys like rondo and cp3 will have them all over and then it takes away from the sophistication of the nba. Makes it seem less prestigious…like redneck nascar.

  • The Mauve Avenger

how long until David Stern’s face makes it onto the jerseys?

  • http://thetroyblog.com Tedd-the-Bear

Gross. Really gross, like eating pig intestines. Oh wait, they call those sausages. Stern is a massive sausage.

  • http://slamonline.com LLC#12

Why don’t they just put ads on the warm up jerseys!!! The company gets advertising space before the game, at halftime, and whenever the camera shows the bench, and the jerseys aren’t defaced with logos?! It might generate less revenue then ads on jerseys but, its a starting point.

  • Ann

please someone vote to get rid of David Stern or we need to have a up rising

  • Rik Smits Mullet

and the rich get even richer.
I always liked the clean jerseys of the nba.
But i havent bought one since the signed that horrendous deal with the three stripe brand.
because the jerseys feature a prominent three stripes logo.

  • KH10

$100 million divided by 30 teams doesn’t really seem like a lot when teams are spending $12 mil a year on guys like Kris Humphries. What’s the point?

  • http://www.slamonline.com Redd

It’s 100 million, which is like a single max salary.

  • http://www.nba.com Shadojoker

    Noooooooooooooooo!!!!!

  • Jerome

Can’t wait to see the Orlando, Focus on the Family ad. Perfect for Dwightmare.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Any new revenue streams that don’t have to be shared with players, and if I’m not mistake sponsorships are only partially shared with players, are good revenue streams.

  • Da-Meat-Hook

What was the first basketball Jersey you bought with your own money? Mine was a Marbury Timberwolves(away) Jersey!

  • LA Huey

Damon Stoudemire – (Away) Raptors jersey.

  • GET TECH

why such a snail pace with the replays… the game should have been officiated by robots already..no, seriously, why not use tablets, IR sensors, multiple cameras and other super high tech sh!t when its available..

  • franko

    How about: CHICAGO RED BULLs

  • derby

    carmelo alternative #15

  • Da-Meat-Hook

Huey, Mighty Mouse was a bad man on that squad!

@ Derby, I wanted a nuggets jersey back in the day, but decided to go with a Kenyon Martin away jersey instead of a Melo one . . . Kenyon changed his number, got lips tattoed on his neck, and had what seemed to be 37 knee surgeries the following season. SMH!

  • http://slamonline.com p

or a sacramento burger kings jersey

  • davidR

DMH, i copped a blue orlando magic tracy mcgrady nike swingman from footlocker. i wish i got the black pinstripe one instead!
i’ve been wanting a black sac kings jason williams swingman for a long time now

  • shawnkemp4prez

This is disgusting. I’ve been an NBA fan my whole life, but I have to reconsider now. Isn’t anything sacred anymore? Was the league hurting that much for dollars? A stankin McDonald’s arch will forever be a part of my favorite ball players’ legacies now. Greedy hoes

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

I think it was an Olajuwon.

  • Da-Meat-Hook

davidR, Penny or T-mac, either way that jersey was a classic.
allenp, I remember asking my parents for either an Olajuwon or Barkley(Sixers)jersey for my 10th birthday. My dad bought me a Brad Daugherty t-shirt instead. We haven’t spoken since . . .

  • John

This is a joke. It won’t even raise enough revenue to make any real difference. David Stern thinks this will raise $100 million total . . . for the 30 teams combined. That’s $3.3 million per team, not even enough for the mid-level exception.

Here’s what’s going to happen if we allow this: within 2-3 years, Stern will complain that the ad patches aren’t bringing in enough revenue. His solution? More/larger ads.

  • John

Also, before anyone compares this to European soccer, remember that in soccer they play for 45 minutes straight with no commercials, so the sponsors have to get in on the uniforms. Basketball has plenty of breaks already. No need for ads on the uniforms!

  • LA Huey

Meat Hook, Daugherty anecdote is hilarious. When I got my Mighty Mouse jersey, it was already a bit small and then I hit a growth spurt. Grew out of it in two months. Sucked.
Allenp, I hope it was the Clutch City one and not the one with the cartoon rocket.

  • http://www.nba.com Dacre

My first jwrsey was Charles barkley with matching shorts. Suns. Folllwed a few years later my dad buys me a Harold miner jersey. Heat. . . Dad leave the jersey buying to me hey. . . ?

  • http://www.starting5.com.au NM30

White Shawn kemp the first, then Allen iverson red rookie second

  • http://www.nba.com Dacre

The thing that will happen is that teams get called by their sponser names like in Australia’s NBL we have the Adelaide ‘Pura Milk’ 36ers and the Wollongong URG/AHM Hawks. It does detract from the essence of competition a little and yet without those sponsers these teams don’t play. The gold Coast blaze are not in the league next season because of this money/sponsers issue.

  • 1tail

Yeah. No more jersey’s for me.

  • Da-Meat-Hook

Don’t be too hard on your pops, Dacre. “Baby Jordan” was nice for about 2 seasons…okay, maybe 1 season lol.

  • http://www.nba.com Dacre

See even an awesome allstar weekend dunk comp showing will get the casual fan in.

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ Redd

Damn I feel super young, didn’t start watching til’ Jordan at like the age 5. But yeah this jersey thing is wack, we need to bann.

  • http://Roosterteeth.com Caboose

I’m so young, first jersey I EVER had was a Kings Mitch Richmond jersey. First one I paid for? Hrmm…Vince Carter Raptors by Champion.

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

@da meat hook Kobe Bryant gold jersey. Saving up for Lebron James black heat jersey

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

    Dominque’s jersey.

  • Drig

Got a Kobe #8 gold jersey. Better cop a new jersey before those freaking ads end up on the Jerseys….so……Gasol or Bynum? …… :(

  • Da-Meat-Hook

Caboose, a “Rock” Richmond jersey is badass!

nbk, I was thinking about getting an “El Heat” Bron jersey.

JTaylor, was it the OG Hawks uni? I had a Stacey Augmon one but it was the newer uni with the stupid bird in the front.

  • Da-Meat-Hook

Drig, risky to buy a Laker Jersey at the moment…Bynum and/or Gasol may not be there next season. I’d play it safe and get a vintage Sasha Vujacic jersey. Instant street cred right there!

  • jake

    NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • ENDS
