Report: Rockets, Magic ‘Not Active’ on Dwight Howard Trade

Two sources told David Aldridge of NBA.com that trade talks have been suspended between the Magic and Rockets. Aldridge reports that the Rockets want to take on one bad contract from the Magic and give up one of their three first-round picks, a future pick and a veteran—contrary to a recent report that Houston would package various draftees and future picks, and take back multiple bad contracts: “Despite the Houston Rockets using the amnesty provision to waive forward Luis Scola, there was no trade of Howard from Orlando to Houston, and sources briefed on the talks between the two sides said the teams weren’t nearly as close to a trade as many have speculated. That can change in an instant, of course, but late Friday, there was no deal. Talks between the two sides are ‘not active,’ one source said Friday. ‘There’s nothing happening,’ another source said. The Rockets, according to a league source briefed on the discussions, are willing to take one bad contract back from the Magic, not two or three, as has been speculated. And in return, Houston will give up one of the their three first-round picks in last month’s Draft– Jeremy Lamb, Royce White or Terrence Jones –but only one. The Rockets would be willing to send a future draft pick to Orlando –presumably the Lottery-protected first-rounder Houston received this week from Toronto for guard Kyle Lowry — and send a veteran player to the Magic, helping Orlando clear $10 to $15 million worth of cap room, in exchange for the six-time All-Star and three-time Defensive Player of the Year.”

The question I keep asking myself is what can Houston offer that Orlando can’t player wise? Howard would still be going to a situation where he’s not going to be any closer to a ring then what he is now? Especially if he’s going with the supporting cast he already has is Orlando. Are the Rockets just going to hope that others will want to come in 1 season time to the franchise if Howard even re-signs with them? Dwight will just keep playing games come the end of the day.

This story makes it sound like Dwight and Hedo for Terrence Jones and a lame first rounder? Awesome.

Nets were willing to take on more than the Rockets. I really feel like Magic are screwed

Magic can always put Dwight in the doghouse and wait till the trade deadline.

If Dwight goes to Houston his career is over. I actually think Houston will try to get Howard and try to send to Lakers for Bynum if Howard will not resign. Bynum will sign an extension in Houston. Rockets can still win on this trade if happens in the end. Dwight career still will be over if he goes to Nets, Deron is injury prone, JJ is a playoff choker, he needs to go to the Lakers.

Mark, Houston’s goal is to get a star, period. You don’t win without one and now that so many are grouping up together, it’s harder and harder to get one. That’s why you have to go “all in” to get the now, much like they’re doing. Maybe Dwight re-signs and stays, maybe they do a sign and trade with LA and get Bynum, maybe DH just walks and they end up with a top 3 pick the following year. Regardless, they’ll have a better individual player than they have had in almost 3 years. If DH does stay, it won’t be the Magic of the West. Rockets will remain flexible to make moves. They already cleared room for another max guy next summer.

this is not good for the Magic. It should be at least Dwight and Hedo for 2 of their 2012 drafts and that 1 lame 1st round.

I think he winds up w the Lakers for Bynum. Where else makes sense? He won’t sign anywhere but Bklyn or LA…
