Sources: Kyrie Irving Breaks Hand (UPDATED)

by Tzvi Twersky | @ttwersky

Kyrie Irving had his hand set in a cast today, according to sources. The injury, which the same sources say is most likely a broken bone, occurred while the point guard was practicing with the Cleveland Cavaliers for the Las Vegas Summer League.

No further information as to the severity of the injury is known at this time.

Irving, the reigning NBA Rookie of the Year, averaged 18.5 ppg, 5.4 apg and 3.7 rpg in 51 games this past season. While in Las Vegas earlier this month, Irving played on the USA Select Team.

The Cavaliers are set to play their first Summer League game tomorrow, Sunday, July 15, at 8:30 p.m.

UPDATE: According to Jason Lloyd, the injury, a fractured bone in Irving’s right hand, occurred when the point guard smacked his hand into the padding of a wall after committing a turnover during practice. “I’m a little disappointed for a freak accident like that,” Irving told Lloyd. “I have to be more responsible about my health. It was crazy. It happened so fast. That thing I did, hitting the padding on the wall, I’ve done it so many times. This time it was just a freak accident.”

Irving is expected to miss 6-8 weeks. He should be ready for the start of training camp.

He’s not trash he’s average, I never said he’s trash just not better than Kidd, but I’ll allow arguments for Felton.

  • IndyB

I’m comparing numbers with his contemporaries, Einstein. Who said he was elite? The two numbers you used to try to say he wasn’t good were the ones that show you exaggerate how bad he is. That’s a hard concept for you to comprehend considering all you do is spout off random opinions without actually examining anything. You said his stats show he’s not a good pg. Do you understand the premise of an argument? Any argument?

  • http://www.slamonline.com Redd

Lol exaggerated? Are u born naturally stupid? The stats I pointed out back my claim up of him bring TO prone. You must not comprehend NBA stats much.

  • IndyB

LOL@ you not being able to stick to your own argument. You said “his stats show he isn’t a good pg”. That’s a direct quote from you. FYI you never pointed out specific stats because all you do is make general claims without real context. Nobody denied he is turnover prone. Elite veteran starters who played a handful more minutes per game had similar turnover numbers. Just stop. You’re making yourself look even dumber.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Redd

Really now? I look at Roses game stats and I see 0s. You’re an idiot. Again Rose played 4 more games and if u look at his stats he has a lot of games with 0 turnovers. Again stats don’t lie, if you’re going to be a Stan, back it up with proof as to why.

  • IndyB

Sooooooooo you are saying that Rose’s turnovers per game was not 3.0? Redd, you are the worst commentor here. Event the Seed can argue better than you. You are saying NBA.com’s info is wrong? ESPN and every other stat keeping site is wrong? This is why your opinion isn’t respected. Assessing a person’s average per game performance is how you back up a point. Rose has more starting experience. Rose also averaged 3.0 to’s per game last season. Lin’s average for his starting stretch was 3.5 and 3.6 for the whole season. All you do is hate on players not named Rose, and you don’t even do it well.

  • http://www.slamonline.com omphalos

LMAO Yo Redd is the worst.

  • http://www.slamonline.com JTaylor21

Do u not love his balls omphalos?

  • http://www.slamonline.com omphalos

    ^^Well played. Well played Taylor.

  • http://www.reverbnation.com/tray24 T-Ray

    Lol

  • http://www.InternationalOutfit.com KingZ_777

Kyrie’s gonna come back stronger and be the B-E-S-T point guard in the league in two seasons. Lin is going to make an ok starting pg on the Rockets, but he does have to slow down the turnovers. All the young pgs do. Lin has too many haters for someone who hasn’t accomplished anything yet.

  • Skrill

saved from Kobe ripping him up after Olympics

  • http://www.slamonline.com Redd

Again check his gamelog, he rarely has gone over 4 turnovers while averaging 3 assists less than Nash. Stats don’t lie(however I misspoke with the ’0s’, I absentedly looked at TOs only whilst not knowing its cause he hadn’t played). Hypocritical how u defend Lin and compare him to elite talent knowing damn well as a fanboy he isn’t there. Rose has an MVP, it’s safe to have his back there’s reason.

  • SeanMagicJuan

Lol at IndyB using the phrase “let the haters hate” then telling someone to stop listening to so much hip hop. Lin is a decent young PG though, he is above average in the pick and roll which will earn you millions in the NBA.

  • SeanMagicJuan

“I would love to see him back,” Carmelo Anthony said, “but I think he has to do what’s best for him right now.

But it’s really not up to Lin anymore. He signed the offer sheet and the ball is in the Knicks’ court.

“It’s not up to me,” Anthony said laughing. “It’s up to the organization to say that they want to match that ridiculous contract that’s out there.”

Seems like a little shade from Melo, thoughts?

  • http://www.slamonline.com Slick Ric

I wonder if he’ll use his off hand to wipe his butt now

  • IndyB

SeanMagicJuan: Re-read the comments. You really don’t know what you’re talking about. I never made that hip-hop comment. I was mocking Redd for saying it.

  • IndyB

Redd: Look slow guy, TURNOVERS PER GAME they aren’t far off. Point blank. Nobody said he was on Rose’s level overall. Your whole arguments are based on points NOBODY made. You’re such a slow azz DRose fanboy that you don’t even understand what you’re arguing about, idiot. We are talking about TURNOVERS. I bet this is how frustrated your mother felt when you were a kid. You’re just dense.

  • IndyB

Redd, I better not ever see you use a single per game stat here. I mean ever. Since your style of argument requires picking random isolated games as your proof to evaluate overall performance, you cannot use apg, rpg, to’s per game, PER, bpg, spg, or assists to turnover ratios.

  • http://www.reverbnation.com/tray24 T-Ray

    Damn Indy

  • http://www.slamonline.com Redd

3.1, but Rose played less but still had a better TO/assist ratio. He wasn’t going on 5+ TO game streaks. So again you idiot, you’re dissecting stats like a 1 year old NBA fan which would not surprise me what with you being a complete and utter imbecile. YOU were the one that mentioned Rondo, Westbrook, Rose in the same breath as Lin, now all of a sudden you’re recanting? Lin/Knick fans are the worst. No sports knowledge having mark b*tch. Now rant to yourself with your non sensical arguments.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Slick Ric

Damn! so I got trolls now? this is the second time within days someone has used my name making suspect comments….you guys are serious lames.

  • http://www.reverbnation.com/tray24 T-Ray

    I…got…trolls! I got troooooolls!

  • IndyB

Who the F is recanting, idiot? I compared their minutes and TO’s. They all have above 3 TO’s per game. Where in that statement or any other did ANYONE say anything about Lin being as good as them? I swear to god I will PayPal you money for a reading tutor. You are functionally illiterate. Your reading comprehension skills don’t exist. Do you realize I’m not the only one who thinks you’re an idiot? Show me where there was any comparison with Lin and those guy outside of minutes and turnovers, dumb@ss. I’m not even a Knick fan, I just think you’re so f#cking stupid it’s fun thrashing on you.

  • IndyB

Now you want to actually look up everybody’s TO’s? FOH. Enough with the stupid @ss “Derrick Rose never did this that or the other”, you groupie. I notice you manage to use one single mention of his name to turn an entire convo into being about him. That’s creepy and weird and obsessive.

  • http://slamonline.com Datkid

lamo yo T-Ray… I got troolllls in different area cooodess I got Trolls! in different area cooodddessss.. but why are we talking about Lin’s wildly overrated @ss? btw Redd all you had to do to win this argument was bring up how Derrick Rose ate him alive when he matched up against him lmao

  • http://www.reverbnation.com/tray24 T-Ray

    Lol Datkid knows what’s up

  • http://slamonline.com Datkid

    lmao always fam ^^

  • Valkyrie

I don’t think anyone is saying Lin is on those guy’s level so head to head perfomances are kind of irrelevent in their conversation.

  • Valkyrie

I also peeped that Redd always brings up Rose in every conversation, and I too find it annoying. Just sayin’…

  • IndyB

Uh, Valkyrie thanks for not being slow and actually reading the comments. I’m still waiting to see how anyone suggested Lin was up there with the elite pgs. Someone has to explain to me how Rose destroying Lin in a matchup changes the fact that everyone averaged between 3.0-3.6 To’s per game last season smfh.

  • http://slamonline.com Datkid

oh yeah valkyrie no question it’s annoying.. and weird and IndyB you compared his turnover ratio to guys who are elite but whatever dog lmao

  • IndyB

I’m sure you know the difference between To’s per game, and assist to turnover ratio. Two separate stats my g. No one even hinted at Lin being on Rondo, Westbrook etc level overall. If Redd was smart he could’ve used….naaahhh I won’t help him.

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

    Don’t ever challenge Kobe.

  • http://slamonline.com Mars

Kobe? That was funny if you understand the joke. Easy money. EEEEEasy money.. You just got out of high school.

  • http://slamonline.com tealish

It sounds dumb, but smacking a padded wall really isn’t that dumb. This is not on par with punching a fire extinguisher.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Dagger

I really do think that the hype around this kid and the attention he received from casual fans during Linsanity created a backlash among more hardcore basketball fans. Per-36 min stats should always be taken with a grain of salt, but this kid was hitting 19/8 per-36 as a rookie, despite all the changes and upheaval surrounding his team. By comparison: Irving was at 22/6. Lin was top-3 in the entire league at generating free throws from iso situations. Oh, and when Melo and Amare with both out the Knicks were stomping teams with Lin at the helm. You can say all you want about them beating weak teams that didn’t have a chance to scout Lin: the Knicks shouldn’t have won anything at all during that stretch, and Lin was tossing up game-winners. The business of the game is one thing, but even just from a basketball standpoint Lin is worthy of a pretty big contract. Sure, the sample size was low last year, but this kid has real potential, and lots of players have received far bigger contracts while showing far less potential.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Dagger

    Sorry, wrong thread.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Redd

I don’t comment for others and if Rose is brought up I talk about him. I’m a Bulls fan, I defend my team when I think I should but if I agree with any anti Bulls sentiments I stay hush, missed me with that one Valk.

  • http://slamonline.com Datkid

fair enough IndyB. and lmaooo at that last statement. *daps*

  • http://slamonline.com Datkid

I cosign dagger about the backlash but honestly IDK about his potential. I think his peak was Linsanity. you take away SSOL, you take away feasting on weak defensive teams and/or bad defensive pg’s(Derek Fisher), and you give teams a chance to scout him and suddenly the margin for error becomes far less and his production drops. and I’m saying this as a guy who likes the way homie plays and really respects all he’s gone through. what happened when he played against the heat, celtics or bulls? Homie can’t lead a championship team or even a middling one in my opinion. no hate tho

  • http://slamonline.com Datkid

Dwill and John Wall both dropped about 30 or 40 on the man. Ricky Rubio had a triple double. what happens when he has to see guys like CP3, Russell Westbrook, and Ty lawson 4 times a year? i’m just saying.

  • IndyB

@ Datkid lmaoooo… In terms of Lin tho, defensively I really don’t think he is going to get better. Every last one of those guys is going to regularly drop their best games on his head. The best we can hope for with him is that while they are giving him buckets, he’s able to give a few back. He’s a good passer so he can help a team offensively, and he plays hard. I don’t think he can be more than a role player. He’ll be a decent starting pg tho. He’s not a guy to build around, but he’s one of the guys you put around a couple of stars.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

@ Datkid: How can you say Lin’s peak was his 2nd season? Houston’s offense basically is 7SSOL–all they do is run pick and roll. It’s a point guard’s dream.
Lin wasn’t just owning a bunch of scrubs… He played well against Dallas and LA, who both are very good defensive teams (minus Derrick Fisher). He also outplayed Kyrie Irving. And against John Wall, even though John dropped 33 on him, Lin still had something like 20 and 11 AND came up with the W. It’s fine to be realistic, but there’s no reason to be overly skeptical… If he was a first round pick nd didn’t have the Linsanity hype but still put up those numbers NO ONE would be saying he’s peaked at his sophomore year. EVERYONE would be saying he has potential. His hype is both a pro and a con.

  • http://slamonline.com KDub503

So guys…there’s an article about Kyrie Irving’s broken hand but 80 out the 94 comments are about Jeremy Lin. Will you all please proceed out of this article’s thread into another.

  • http://slamonline.com Datkid

alright so my comment won’t post. but here’s my point. teddy you and I both know that Dfish and J.Kidd were huge holes in the lakers and mavs defense last season. the idea of being a good defensive team is kinda negated if the weakest point in your defense is guarding the focal point of the other teams. your 4-5 every time down the floor basically. yes it’s cool that he barely outplayed Kyrie even though kyrie is younger and has played far less college ball than him. I actually think he had like 29 on John Wall lol.. but regardless John Wall’s team was 1. full of knuckleheads and 2. terrible at defending the P and R . I’m really not being overly skeptical but I’m just saying that not every team he’s gonna play next year will be terrible or terrible at defending pg’s bc right now the L is full of great PG’s and he won’t be able to just play 15 games he’s gonna have to play 82 against people who really don’t want him to embarrass them.

  • Drig

@Terry………..LAL is not a good defensive team. Esp. if the opposing O is a PG dominant one. Never was for the last 2 years.

  • L Dribble

Jeez – Aren’t there enough articles about Lin’s ballsack to comment on? Can’t you take your Lin / Asik alley-oop fantasies elsewhere?

  • mask

    Get well soon Kyrie

  • mask

btw Lin isnt a good fit for the knicks b/c he is more of a scoring gaurd and you really dont need that when melo is on the team…I think Felton fits much better and i say they get past the 1st round of the playoffs this coming season.
