Timberwolves Meet With Nicolas Batum, Expected To Offer Contract

Portland Trail Blazers restricted free agent Nicolas Batum flew into Minnesota Sunday evening to meet with Timberwolves officials, who are expected to make the swingman a four-year offer hovering around $50 million. The Boston Herald has the details: “No contract can be signed until the NBA’s moratorium on trades and signings ends July 11. The Trail Blazers and owner Paul Allen then would have three days to match the Wolves’ offer. The Wolves pursued Batum before the 2010 draft, reportedly offering the No. 4 pick they eventually used to select Wes Johnson for a player who was taken 25th overall in 2008. But the Blazers refused the offer. Batum, 23, was scheduled to fly from his home in France to Minneapolis to meet with team owner Glen Taylor, president of basketball operations David Kahn and Adelman, all of whom flew to Seattle to meet with retired two-time All-Star and unrestricted free agent Brandon Roy on Friday. Batum presumably would give the Wolves what they still lack after drafting Johnson fourth overall in 2010 and trading that same summer for Michael Beasley, whose two seasons with the team ended Saturday when he became an unrestricted free agent after he did not receive an $8.1 million qualifying offer. He is a versatile perimeter player who can handle the ball, defend and shoot the three-pointer while playing both forward and guard positions.”

Four Year – $50 Million is WAY too much money. Oh well, at least they will make the playoffs *IF* Rubio is able to come back, and Kevin Love can learn to affect wins like he does the box score.

This is a good pick up for Wolves if Paul Allen doesn’t match. Batum is one of the guys I follow in the league and from what I’m understanding he isn’t picky about his destination. At 23 years old, he’d mesh in well with Rubio and Kevin Love.

I don’t think in my 19 years of living have I ever seen one franchise get so many players that play the same damn position. They have Williams, Chase, Wes and now they want Batum? And they have 3 PGs that could start on any roster? Hady mercy

  • Patrick

Williams is a 4 forced to play the 3. Batum is miles ahead of Chase and Wes.
Also Portland is going to match anyways (I hope they don’t) I wanna see Nic on the T-Wolves.

This shows how bad Kahn is at drafting players. Wolves wouldn’t need Batum if he would of just hit on one of the 8 1st round picks he had.

Drafting Ricky Rubio and Kevin Love weren’t hits?

I live in Minnesota and obviously everybody hates Kahn bc of Jonny Flynn, Wes Johnson, etc., but he has a chance this off-season to redeem himself a bit and get aggressive in free agency and in the trade market

Batum is a really good player, but I think the T-wolves need more guys over 30 years old on their roster. They need more experienced players to add maturity to that team.

$50M/4yrs?! Why did we have a 66 game season again, owners?

  • http://Roosterteeth.com Caboose

Can we officially say that the lockout did NOTHING except delay the season and give the owners more money? This is the kind of contract you give in 2k12 because you’ve changed the potential on the player to 99.

    Haha cosign Caboose

  • Erik Franke

I have heard from several sources that the TWolves are looking to sign O.J. Mayo. I think that would be a great pick up to the Wolves.

Word! what’s up with these contracts… if he’s getting that, what’s Lou Williams gonna get? Sometimes I wish the NBA was like the NFL.

  • LA Huey

Caboose is stingy with his imaginary money. Haha.

LA Huey: Haha yeah, I’m not overpaying for my digital players! I was psyched when I posted a 82-0 season while simulating every game.

as much as i like batum, $32mil/4yrs seems a better deal for my wolves. also ricky get healthy already!

  • Billy Hoyle

This dudes a sleeper he can ball and stroke it when he wants to…i should know…i use him on 2k12 lol

Kahn drafted Rubio. Other than that, according to that one GM report, he definitely has to be a horrible drafting GM. How do you miss out on Steph Curry and draft Jonny Flynn? And how do you choose Wes Johnson over Demarcus Cousins? Kevin Love was actually drafted by the Memphis Grizzlies and then traded to the Wolves for OJ Mayo (whom the Wolves drafted). I’m keeping my eye on this one.

I know Batum is a f/a, and can sign any contract, and the Blazers get a chance to match. But here’s a thought- In a 3 team trade, Wolves get Batum, Blazers get Gay, and Grizz get Rubio… and than, Grizz trade Z-Bo for Pau Gasol… Grizz are now 2 starters away from having an all Spanish starting 5. :)
