Toronto Raptors Traded James Johnson to Sacramento Kings

A minor deal has reportedly taken place between Toronto and Sacramento, as the Raptors sent forward James Johnson to the Kings in exchange for a future second-round draft pick. From ESPN: “The trade could be consummated as soon as Monday, sources said. Johnson is scheduled to earn $2.8 million in 2012-13, which is the final year of his current contract. The Raptors, meanwhile, continue to search for a workable trade to find a new home for veteran point guard Jose Calderon. [...] The Raptors have let it be known that they prefer not to release Calderon through the NBA’s amnesty clause, which is only an option through Tuesday until next summer’s one-week amnesty window in July 2013. ‘We have had a few more trade inquiries regarding Jose (but) the scenario doesn’t seem to present itself to a trade today,’ Raptors president and general manager Bryan Colangelo told the Toronto Sun at summer league in Las Vegas. ‘But we’ll continue to monitor that and just try to determine whether it’s going to work in the long run.’ [...] Johnson averaged 9.1 points, 4.7 rebounds, 1.1 steals and 1.4 blocks per game last season but is no longer in Toronto’s plans after the recent arrival of Landry Fields and Linas Kleiza’s return to health.”

  • James aka…

Great plan. We had a Landry Fields for 2.8 a year, but decided we’d prefer to pay triple for the name brand.

we send packing jonhson n replace him with fields. same amount of points but better defender and a lot cheaper and we still chose Landry. oh lord

A second round pick? Are you kidding me. Barbosa your best scorer on you team was traded for a second round pick dnd now you best defensive player is now traded for a second round f-ing pick? This is messed up. Why are we giving away player?

JJ was too tough. Didn’t fit the Raptor mold.

What? I’m a little disappointed that we just let him go for a 2nd round pick. I’m going to miss his 1.1 steals and 1.4 blocks per game. Here’s hoping this is to make room for a bigger trade coming up…

I think JJ is better than Fields.

I don’t get it. If you’re gonna field a starting front court with a young and unproven Jonas V and a finesse 4 who doesn’t rebound or play D, you need an athletic blue collar SF like Johnson to help on the boards and contest shots. On top of that, trading a starter/former lottery pick for a second rounder?!

I agree with the above comments..Johnson>Fields in terms of skill vs salary..and colangelo stupid to trade barbosa..one of the best one on one players in the league imo..

I’m not at all surprised. While JJ is a hell of an athlete and player, he was also inconsistent and moody. When building a team, it’s important to trust the players and feel secure with the group. Unfortunately, Johnson didn’t provide that this time around.

i like the addition of James Johnson and if we can sign Terrence Williams too , kings would be fine but I would have been much happier if the kings got Jose Calderon and derozan for Salmons , Hayes , Garcia , Outlaw.

It has been really, really f—ing hard being a fan of these two teams for the last decade or so.

Did D Casey approve of this ? He loves the defense and hustle that jj brought and then they trade it away for the total opposite? All do respect to fields he’s a better shooter imo but that’s about it

Kings will make some noise this season…barring ego meltdown of the collective. Oh wait…Maloofs are still owners. Nevermind.

Kings looking pretty decent. Nice pick up loved him on the Bulls.

@VanCity, from what I hear D Casey is one of the reasons JJ is gone. They clashed towards the end of the season. Apparently JJ did something to piss Casey off pretty bad. I don’t think the reason was ever released though…

@niQ I never knew that. .. but then again its not like Toronto was running low on wings before this
He just never seemed like the type of guy to piss off a coach

  • MeloMan15

we could’ve atleast got a first round pick for him I think

we could’ve atleast got a first round pick for him I think

  • Bravo

Damn I rlly liked his game. He was rlly tuff on defense and good at blocking shots

  • Bravo

Soooo I guess Quincy any will b gettin his playing time

  • Mack

Fack obviously this was a money move but JJ was a JYD type of player than fans loved to get behind, he played defense and could block shots, he was a decent slasher and always surprized me with his passing ability. Sad to see another good player leave the Raptors
