Mario Chalmers Says He’s a Top-10 NBA Point Guard

by Eldon Khorshidi | @eldonadam

Miami Heat point guard Mario Chalmers earned the respect and swayed the opinions of many fans during last year’s Playoffs, playing an instrumental role throughout the Miami Heat’s Championship run. In Game 4 of the NBA Finals, the Kansas product had a breakthrough 25-point performance, with 12 of those points coming in the fourth quarter. He followed that up with a solid 10 point, 7 assists, 2 rebound line in the series-clinching Game 5. And according to Chalmers, who will be entering only his fifth NBA season, he’s barely approached the surface in terms of his talent level and production potential. While he still has a lot of room to grow, Chalmers believes right now he’s already a top-10 NBA point guard.

More details, via BleacherReport.com:

Mario Chalmers: “[Rondo's] not the best, but he’s in the top five. There are a lot of great point guards in the league, Deron Williams, Chris Paul and Steve Nash. There are a lot of great guards in the NBA so for him to say he’s the best is a pretty bold statement. I’d say that I am in the front end of the top 10. [By the end of my career] if I’m not the best, than at least one of the best.”

    He has Joe Flacco syndrome

As a reserve. No way Calderon would start over Kidd or Collison.

  • Jimbo

Kidd’s in NYC… he’d start over Collison. All they need is someone run an offence smoothly, which he can do

  • Caboose

You believe Calderon would start over Collison. We’re done here.

  • Jimbo

And you believe that Calderon is only the 26th best point guard… idiots these days.

The fact that his team clowns him for forgetting plays between the end of timeouts to halfcourt should plant the idea that he might not be one of the better PG’s in the League. But hey, he’s got a ring. And unlike Eddie Curry, he actually played in the games….

Chalmers is crazy. Marbury is still better than he is. The guy’s stats don’t exactly back up his words. 8.3 ppg, 3.6 apg, 42 percent shooting, and wasn’t even top 50 in guards for efficiency last season… he’s the third best passer on his team. Hilarious. When you’re a top 10 point guard it doesn’t matter how much talent you have around you, you still put up noticeable numbers. Look at former all-stars who couldn’t run point cause of their teams like Ainge, Cassell, Van Exel or now players like Dragic, Lowry, Felton. They flash skills of being all-stars and unstoppable when on… Chalmers didn’t even have one game with 10 assists. He’s basically a shooting guard who’d be a bench player on any other team.

Would he start over Paul, Nash, Westbrook, Rondo, D-Rose, D-Will, Ty Lawson, Wall, Tony Parker, Rubio, Dragic, Irving, Lowry, Conley, or even Jason Kidd? Top 10 point guards in the league should at least lead their team in assists… or something, haha. He’ll hit a clutch “wide open” shot here and there because of the defense so worried about LeBron and Wade.
