Sacramento Kings Deny They Are Trying to Move to Virginia

Owners of the Sacramento Kings have refuted a report that the team is in talks to move to Virginia Beach, Va. The Hampton Roads Business Journal reported yesterday the Kings and officials from Comcast were discussing a new stadium and relocation of the NBA franchise. Via ESPN.com: “‘We haven’t talked to Virginia Beach,’ Joe Maloof told CBS13 in Sacramento. Kings owners Joe, Gavin and George Maloof pulled out of a plan to help finance an arena in Sacramento earlier this year, saying it didn’t make financial sense for the franchise. The team has been tied to discussion in Anaheim, Calif., as well as other cities. ‘The Kings have been approached by numerous cities interested (in) buying the team and relocating it,’ Kings spokesman Eric Rose said to CBS13 in an email. ‘We are not going to discuss which cities have approached the team and are not going to comment on every rumor. I can tell you that the Kings are 100 percent focused on putting a winning team on the court.’ Virginia Beach mayor Will Sessoms would not comment on the Kings but did say some meetings will take place. ‘Comcast, Live Nation and Global Spectrum (a Comcast-owned stadium operator) have come to the city,’ he told the Business Journal. ‘They would guarantee us a professional sports team (if a deal goes through).’”

I hope they dont. that would kill all possibility of b.more ever getting a team.

The Maloof boys want out of Sac Town because the money ain’t right, but they would go to Virginia?? Doesn’t make sense. I can see them making big money in Anaheim or Seattle, not VA. I don’t believe this.

I’m from VA so I’m a little biased. But, Virginia Beach has the number 43rd biggest media market in the country, and is the 39th biggest city higher than OKC,Memphis and couple of other teams. But, yeah I don’t see them coming if Anaheim and Seattle makes a run at the Maloofs. It would be pretty cool though, as I have been hoping VA would get some kind of major professional team. And yeah I know the media market means nothing if you don’t win and attract fans.

    The stool bend kings? Nah

I am from Va, and I think this would be a great move. Since this would be the first major league sport (we have mulitple minor leage teams) they would get a tremoundous backing, and not to mention vacationers that come here year around (during basketball season is when spring break is).

So strange….Virginia has roughly the 45-40th largest media market while the Sacramento/Stockton/Modesto area is almost always listed in the top 20. Maybe the problems with the Kings lie with the fact that the Maloofs won’t spend money on ANYTHING to encourage fans? Cheap, hypocritical owners.

Cosign Caboose. The media market argument just doesnt hold water because Sacramento area is larger than many teams markets already. It comes down to the MaGoofs and their terrible ownership

from one crap area to another, what would be the difference?

  • Groves

To Kansas City, Seattle, Pittsburgh, Baltimore or Virginia Beach. just not Anahiem

PJAX cursed the cowbell fans. Where will HOF Divac’s jersey hang?

  • greg

KC would be a good location, but Baltimore would make the most sense. lots of basketball fans over there.

Since 2010, I’ve been saying Seattle. I still think that’s where the Kings will end up. I don’t want them there, but that’s just my prediction.
