Serge Ibaka, Thunder Agree To 4-Year, $48M Extension

Serge Ibaka and the Thunder have agreed to a four-year, $48 million extension, according to Yahoo! Luxury tax now seems inevitable if OKC is to re-sign James Harden at the end of this upcoming season: “Oklahoma City forward Serge Ibaka has reached agreement on a four-year, $48 million contract extension, league sources told Yahoo! Sports. Ibaka, 22, could’ve been a restricted free agent next summer, and his deal now locks into place three of the Thunder’s core young stars — Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook and Ibaka. Durant and Westbrook each have the maximum contracts allowed under the NBA’s collective bargaining agreement. This deal leaves the future uncertain for guard James Harden, who could command a maximum contract on the league market as a restricted free agent next summer. Along with the remainder of Kendrick Perkins’ three years and $27 million, the small-market Thunder will be hard-pressed to invest so much money into their payroll.”

what does this mean for Harden?

  • http://www.slamonline.com spit hot fiyah

i thought wbrook and durant signed for slightly below max

  • http://www.slamonline.com spit hot fiyah

and they really could have amnestied perk, but with dwight on the lakers, that is no longer an option

  • Bernie

Beasley needs to get his sgit together him and harden would be sweet to watch in Phoenix

  • Briandokim

Thunder made the right move. You can’t teach size..IMO has more upside than Harden does.

  • The_MAN

This is a STEAL. MANY teams would have offered him a max contract without hesitation.

  • iceman

not necessarily they can still amnesty Perkins and play small ball the heat didnt need a center will see

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

If Perry Jones realizes his potential, they could amnesty Perkins. Play Ibaka at the 5. Jones at the 4. Just an option. Who could keep up with Durant, Westbrook, Ibaka, Jones and Harden in the open floor? Wouldn’t let Harden go. Westbrook and Durant both play well with Harden on the floor. It allows Westbrook to play off the ball some. Harden is the best playmaker they have.

This was the right move. Both Ibaka & Harden are gonna get the max on the open market but Ibaka would be harder to replace. Finding a scorer off the bench is a easier hunt than a AllDefensive player with a solid offensive game to match. Not to mention KD & Russ can always pick up the slack & Harden has crazy trade value…

Seems like a fair deal. JaVale McGee, another long, athletic big man with potential got around 50 mil, so Ibaka’s deal is around market value. I’m just glad nobody overpaid for Ibaka strictly based on potential, like how so many teams would have done in the past.

Losing Harden would mean that the only consistent scoring they’d get would be from Durant and Westbrook. They already get 50 a game between themselves. Exactly how much do you expect them to score? People already say Westbrook shoots too much. It’s much tougher to guard all 3 at the end of games than it is to guard just 2.

dwight and pau would eat up ibaka and pj3

  • retloc

I think ibaka will creep up to 16-18 ppg this year, next thing you know he’ll be hitting the dream up. Nothing but pure upside. Remember maynor will be back too, so there’s a decent chance russ will see some two guard while he’s in, somewhat reducing the need for harden. Maynors the real deal if he sees a decent amount of playing time he’ll be able to give them 10 and 6. Also thunder should sign oden for s*its and giggles I mean if he’s talking about working for 35 thou a year he should definitely be down to get the minimum.

  • ctk

To much money for guy who cant play C like u want …I say that cuz in order for OKC to be really unguardable KD got to play the 4 ala Dirk style

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

Maynor and the short time Russell could play at the 2 won’t make up for Harden’s impact. Harden, Westbrook and Durant on the floor at the same time is a nightmare to guard. Replace him with Maynor in that lineup and it’s not close to being as dangerous. Ibaka’s game won’t allow him to get 16-18. His shot is still not that consistent. No post moves. Can’t get 16-18 a game on just jumpshots and rebounding Durant/Westbrook’s misses.

    Well that’s not surprising

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

So, they chose Ibaka over Harden for the long haul then?

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

    I would.

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

Well they showed he’s their top priority. And that’s the obvious choice.

  • http://www.xvideos.com nbk troll

Dude should have been the Defensive POY. And he dunked from BEHIND the free throw line. Gotta lock him up for years. Harden will prob get traded b4 deadline for draft picks. OKC knows what they doing!

  • Basketball_iQ

Durant only has one progression left,, the post at the 4, just like Lebron. Really he’d east guys alive at the 2 ala iceman ,,,Took bosh to get hurt for lbj to realize he’s pippen walking around in karl malone’s body. I wonder if Harden leaving will make him realize who he really is.
Ps- whoever said something about pj3 being a 4 in this league doesn’t know anything about this league stick to fantasy ball.

  • Basketball_iQ

Harden deserves to be a starter in this league… Phoenix will suit him just right… He’s 22ppg waiting to happen,,, not to mention 5-6apg & 5-6 rpg from your 2 guard. I can’t stand westbrook, he’s in the way as far as I’m concerned of durant’s maturation.,, he just hoists shots like its nothing. Get an iQ, damn.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

@Basketball_iQ Whoever thinks LeBron James is Scottie Pippen in Karl Malone’s body needs to give up basketball altogether.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

@Basketball_iQ Durant has led the league in scoring 3 straight seasons. Western Conference Finals in ’10-’11, NBA Finals this past season. So yes, Westbrook is just in the way of everything.

  • http://www.xvideos.com nbk troll

    Basketball iq is a moron.

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

Damn, 48 mil for Sir Chewbacca!

  • http://www.nba.com/knicks danpowers

ehhwww, now the thunder pay 55mil for durant westbrook ibaka perkins and sefolosha. looks like we might see harden in a suns uniform soon

  • greg

i wonder how much harden is seeking? it cant be any less than what ibaka is getting. I hope their owner is up for paying those penalties to have a great team

  • andy

Unfortunately this is what happens when you draft really well.
It becomes impossible to keep all of them. It is a shame too as they are all quit young (KD the oldest) and looked pretty tight together…
paraphrasing Russell Westbrook.. ‘no more questions for you bro..’

  • Hook

They must amnesty or trade ‘overrated’ Perkins. Ibaka is the best defensive player of the league and still improving. They need Harden and they need a decent bench and center (Kaman type). And they need comeback to Seattle!

  • http://nba.com/knicks danpowers

if harden leaves id love to see them add a felton / sessions / dragic type of point guard at a low cost and move westbrook to the shooting guard position. i think theyd be a much better team straight away even though hardens loss would be still very tough
