Brooklyn Nets GM Billy King Says They Can Win a Title

by Marcel Mutoni@marcel_mutoni

Just about everything regarding the Nets is new: the city where they will play starting this season, their extravagantly lavish home, the cheerleaders’ uniforms, and so on.

But above all, the newest thing about Brooklyn’s hoops team is a sense of hope. Which, naturally, can lead those closest to the organization to make outlandish claims.

Billy King, the Nets’ general manager, told the media that with just a bit of luck, it’s possible for his team to win the 2013 NBA championship. Impressively, King managed to do this while maintaining a straight face.

Per the Star-Ledger:

“I think we’ve got a lot of talent, I think we’ve got a good team. And now, it’s going to be those pieces, how quickly they gel,” he said. “I think we have a team that is a playoff team, on paper. I think we have a team that can withstand injuries, because we have depth.”

“But as I’ve always said: Can we win a championship? Yeah. But it takes luck, in an NBA season, to do that. You’ve got to be healthy, for the most part, you’ve got to get some breaks – the ball’s got to bounce your way some times.”

This appears to have become standard operating procedure within the Brooklyn Nets’ front-office. Owner Mikhail Prokhorov famously declared that the team would win a title within five years when he took over, and continues to maintain that stance.

While everyone may rightfully doubt the Brooklyn Nets’ ability to win the ultimate prize, there’s no denying that it will be endlessly fascinating to watch them try.

Mikhail Prokhorov has been making some strong moves, thats for sure

  • Redd

    Not yet they can’t.

I know it’s all about building hype, but why not wait a month and see what kind of chemistry Joe Johnson and D Will have together, see how good the mysterious Bosnian dude is, then maybe entertain the thought of maybe getting lucky and winning a title. Not gonna lie though – I’m excited to see this team play.

  • Malcolm

Billy King is talking shit. They will be lucky to make the playoffs.

  • spit hot fiyah

with their roster they r basically a lock for the playoffs. what is billy king supposed to say? we r tanking this year

  • http://twitter.com/Jzakoni Verified Account

Let the team get excited man

  • ALD

they can but it will be hard. Lopez will have to avg at least 22 and 13 and thats a space jam stretch… JJ would have to avg like 18 and the team defense will have to be great. I think they can make the ECF but everyone has gotten better. Even Washington , TO and the bobcats.

  • OEasy

Am I wrong for thinking this is the same squad as last year plus Joe Johnson. I’m really not buying this hype they’re selling.

  • zogs19994

    HE SNAPPED!!!

  • BRAVO

raptors will be 1st or 2nd in the Atlantic Division

and another member of the Nets that disagrees with their own coach.

  • nick

Breakout season alert watch out for blatche, CJ watson, and 6th man of the year in Marshon brooks……..this team had a turn around of a roaster for the agesssss

It’s already been said, but I’ll reiterate: They probably won’t make the playoffs.

  • danpowers

i dont think that they are championship material yet but they are a very competative team. cant wait fot the first knicks – nets geame

If i was him i wouldnt use the word luck. That just shows a lack of confidence in his ridiculous statement. Miami had bosh out in three P.O. Last year, and wade was a model of inconsistency. i wouldn’t necessarily call that luck. And the year before caron butler was sidelined throughout the playoffs i believe. So idk why king has to make it seem like every champ had luck and fully healthy teams.

  • 23

Needless to say I don’t think as a GM he has to lie to the fans and claim they can win a chip this year.

  • The Mauve Avenger

It’s news every time someone expresses unrealistic confidence in their squad?

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

who said it? because that’s a stupid thing to say. And a stupid thing to reiterate.

  • RKJ92

Raptors are fucking NICEEEE 416!!!! — win or lose they my team for life!!

  • shockexchange

If the NBA doesn’t work out for Blatche, there’s always Wall St. http://clicky.me/7Fzk

  • Kevin

Yeah and I can smash Demi Lovato

  • Marcos Garcia

technically any team can win a championship so this is stupid

  • bazooka

hear this from almost every team

  • Jerome

Technically every team in the NBA “can” win a championship.

  • O

As a hardcore Brooklynite, New Yorker, I have to say that i’m tired of people on our teams claiming they can win it all. It’s cool to be confident, but g0dd*mn! Just shut up and play.

  • O

Maybe not Demi, but you can definitely smash Lindsay Lohan AND her mom at the same time. Just bust out some 40′s of St. Ides.

  • roscoe

    Don King agrees.

  • roscoe

I would love to be there for that first game.

  • Guest

plus joe johnson and brook lopez who got hurt last yr

  • roscoe

imo the little general will get them to the playoffs.

  • danpowers

    me too man

  • Salty

I don’t know about that but I know that their cheerleaders look like chain gang strippers.

  • rugged

HYPE MACHINE..must be something up with the water in NY

  • Vince

I reckon will play well, maybe they’ll play well enough to make the playoffs, but I don’t think they can beat anyone if they make the second round, its good to be proactive and promote your team, but theres a fine line between homerism and just talking nonsense.

  • Jeremys6226

I like Brooklyn and I reckon they’ll make playoffs but it’s ridiculous to claim that they will win the chip in their first year….

  • Mike from Queens

So if I understand correctly, adding Joe Johnson and resigning Gerald Wallace and KRIS HUMPHRIES for a combined 22million per year, takes this Nets team from not even close to making the playoffs to championship contender? Interesting.

  • http://twitter.com/jrlakerfan4life Jonathan

Billy King must have been drunk again like he was when he traded away a lottery draft pick for Gerald Wallace last year.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

O you rolling with the knicks or Nets? Pretty sure I asked you this before… but I can’t remember.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

LOL that’s actually pretty awesome. Nice one, Shock.

  • R32

If Brook Lopez can be more dominant on the boards, Nets have a nice shot at a Playoffs. Championship? No.

  • nick

lol true, with the ridiculous amount of cash he made by being waived….I just think he will do well, because there are no expectations, and he doesn’t have to try and carry a team, just be a role player

  • Max

Plus crash who was injured often.

  • shockexchange

Teddy-the-Bear you know what it is.

  • Ash

Nothing wrong with his statement. Nets should make the playoffs
