Mikhail Prokhorov: Nets to Win a Title Within 5 Years

by Marcel Mutoni / @marcel_mutoni

With the NBA’s always exciting Draft lottery taking place in Secaucus, NJ, tonight, the New Jersey Nets’ new billionaire owner will be on hand to represent his basketball team. And the man will bring along his otherworldly confidence with him, in the hopes of turning around his moribund franchise’s fortunes.

Prokhorov has much bigger goals than just acquiring the top pick in the Draft; the guy is already talking about the Nets not only making the Playoffs next season, but also winning a title (in no more than five years!).

Check out the taped video message below, in which the Russian delivers bold promises to the Nets’ fanbase:

As Jared Wade astutely joked last night on Twitter, there’s a good chance that Mikhail Prokhorov was once a member of the editorial staff here at SLAM.

Hey, you gotta start somewhere.

It was then not necessarily reported that he would add Lebron, Wade, and Bosh to his team.

    the chelsea way!!!

A lot can happen in 5 years. In 5 years the Magic went from drafting Howard #1 to being in the finals. The Cavs made the finals 4 years after drafting Lebron #1, ya ya Lebron is a once in a generation talent and the east really sucked in ’07. 5 years after drafting Iverson #1, the 76ers made the finals. Shaq got his Magic there quick, The Pistons rebuilt rather quickly and were a champion and a force in the east for a few years. Wade led a team to the championship in his 3rd year. Why are people saying this is such a crazy statement by this guy? A lot can happen to a team, and the league in 5 years.

With the NBA salary cap being what it is and this guy seemingly having an endless supply of money, I don’t know how far off his statements are. Get Wall in the draft, sign a free agent this year, and trade Harris for a good piece in return and the Nets are in a good position. He did qualify his statements with “if everything goes as planned…”

  • Diesel Posted: May.18 at 10:44 am
@larrylegend – that’s exactly how I see this thing panning out: Bring me your best players and I’ll pay everyone.

  • LDR4 Posted: May.18 at 10:48 am
Best of luck to him. Nets cant afford a decade of futility like the Mavs had in the 90s.

you know what they say, if u aim for the moon u will land in the stars

I love the choice of the picture for the link

Gotta love the State of the Union address from President Prokhorov.
But because of the salary cap he can’t just go on a spending spree like Abramovich can do every couple years. Hopefully they add some nice pieces this year but don’t risk the next few years by signing unworthy max contracts.

This new Nets owner must have been a SLAM Reader on tha low… SN: I really wished that SLAM Cover of Williams, Van Horn, Gill, Kittles and Cassell really would have come true… SMH

I wish dude and his Nets the best of luck, but for tonight I’m DEFINITELY gonna be rooting AGAINST the Nets! If they get the number 1 pick, that might help convince LeBron to head to NJ, and we can’t have that. Dude needs to go to the Chi.

  • ClydeSays Posted: May.18 at 12:39 pm
Was that piece shot in his grandmother’s dining room? He’s confident, but not exactly convincing. As others have pointed out, money doesn’t always equal smart basketball decisions. The Spurs always spend less that the Mavs & have been much more successful. Sure Duncan had alot to do with that, but their management & coaching staff get a ton of the credit. The Nets do have a sensible GM in Rod Thorn. He’s drafted well & made decent trades. The core of Lee, Lopez, Yee & Harris could be a good one to build on. Getting out of the Swamp is a great start. I will definitely go see a game in Newark.

  • Yesse Posted: May.18 at 12:58 pm
That’s what a russian would always say.

  • daynja! Posted: May.18 at 1:15 pm
    a championship in one year, minimum…….no s#!%

  • Tapion786 Posted: May.18 at 1:18 pm
@clydesays you haven’t seen a nets game in the past two seasons. “yee” aka Yi is a bust. I have not disliked a Net more than Yi. Doesn’t play D and stands around offensively shooting jumpers that don’t drop most of the time. T-will is going to be a big part of the nets future, watch him shine next season (he won’t shine as much if we get wall then lebron, but I wouldn’t really mind that)

  • jedi420 Posted: May.18 at 1:23 pm
This dude is gangsta, can’t wait to see how this works out!!

  • Anton Posted: May.18 at 1:29 pm
This guy’s way too awesome. Rondo bullies Harris in a pre-season game? A couple of calls and Mikhail will have him “taken care of”.

  • d.Y. Posted: May.18 at 1:47 pm
Yeah, like Hussman said, how old are the SLAMs they’re getting in Moscow?

  • Tommy Patron Posted: May.18 at 2:46 pm
    I fully believe him.

  • Jackie Moon Posted: May.18 at 3:03 pm
Championship, minimum 1 year … hey, anything’s possible!

  • doyouwantmore Posted: May.18 at 3:55 pm
Every team in the league would win a championship every year if everything went ‘as planned.’…except for the Clippers. – - – No for real, though. I know having deep pockets is great and everything but, unlike many, I believe it when I see it. I don’t see the Lakers going anywhere. The Magic are going to stick around. The Hawks, Bucks, OKC, and lots of other teams are going to be in title contention every one of those five years. – - – Nice pitch to get Lebron though.

  • doyouwantmore Posted: May.18 at 4:00 pm
The tape ends with “If we do not have the championship within five years, Mr. Bond, zee girl will die.”

  • ab_40 Posted: May.18 at 5:20 pm
if Jay ain’t payin lebron he’s payin dwayne wade. MJ and this guy are the new hands on owners the leauge needs. The rise in money and fans has been stellar but now it’s a cash cow. they need some new things to keep a stellar cash flow

  • jufu Posted: May.18 at 6:14 pm
    2010-2011:
    John Wall
    Dwyane Wade
    Terrence Williams
    Yi Jianlian
    Brook Lopez
time for me to bring back out mah netz jerseys!

  • K-B Posted: May.18 at 7:12 pm
This seems like the kind of guy that would sign Allen Iverson to a contract this off season.

  • 323 356 9658 Posted: May.18 at 7:40 pm
This guy could suck my dick. The nets are gonna go nowhere with teams like the lakers and celtics still around maybe in 100 years the nets will win their first ring

  • Vikturus Posted: May.18 at 7:47 pm
I think both Lebron and John Wall could make Brook Lopez look REALLY good next year!

  • snasty10 Posted: May.18 at 8:16 pm
Who the eff is snasty? Im Tarzan! Boris has a gameplan, and wont give two poops about the luxury tax. Wade and amare to nj with devin and brook. Backcort and frontcourt loaded! With twill flourishing on the wing. Eat it cdr!

  • doyouwantmore Posted: May.18 at 8:31 pm
So much for that idea. I guess Derrick Favors can team up with Yi Jianlian or something.

  • hank Posted: May.18 at 9:07 pm
does anyone know how to write to trashtalk

  • Teddy-the-Bear Posted: May.18 at 9:18 pm
    Ouch…

  • Teddy-the-Bear Posted: May.18 at 9:20 pm
Brook Lopez is going to be the Nets’ cornerstone for this decade, unless they trade him. He is already better than Dwight Howard offensively..

  • bnets Posted: May.19 at 4:36 am
    Go Russian Mobs!!!! Go Nets!!!!!
