Dwight Howard Not Yet Ready to Make a Commitment to the Lakers

by Marcel Mutoni@marcel_mutoni

Dwight Howard’s history with indecision has been well (and painfully) chronicled. And despite his best efforts to avoid public criticism and scorn, it’s something Howard continues to struggle with.

Next summer, Dwight will be an unrestricted free agent, and he claims that he still doesn’t know what the future holds. For now, Howard is just happy and feels lucky to be living and working in Los Angeles.

Per Fox Sports:

“Coming here to play with Kobe, Steve, Pau, and Metta (World Peace) is the ideal situation for me,” Howard said. “All those guy are great players, and there’s something I can learn from each one of them, and hopefully I can blend right in with everyone. “I’m not going to come right out and guarantee that we’re going to win a championship. But I can assure every Laker fan out there that we will bring our “A” game with us every time we step onto the court.”

So, while DH12 has had a lot of time to rehab, get used to his new home city and think about the risk he took in forcing a trade, there’s one thing hasn’t changed in Howard’s life — he’s nowhere close to signing a contract extension with the Lakers. ‘I think the best thing to do is talk about it at the end of the year,’ Howard said. ‘We just went through that last season, basically, and I don’t want to go through it again or see anyone have to go through it. This is going to be my decision, and I’m going to wait till the end of the year. But I’m happy to be in L.A. This is a great place. I love the coaching staff and I love the organization for everything they’ve done for me since I got traded here. Hopefully I’ll have a long career here in L.A.”

Laker fans need not fret. L.A. can offer Dwight Howard the most money next summer, the team will contend for a championship, and above all, the big fella appears to be happy.

For the time being, all signs point to the Dwightmare mercifully coming to an end.

why would he.. steve nash might play half the season and gasol might get traded. He should just go to Brooklyn and start a dynasty with Dwill to win lol.

Dwight, just stay. It’s one of the biggest markets (if not THE biggest market) in the NBA. It has one of the biggest fanbases as well (a solid mixture of long time fans and bandwagoners). It has Kobe, Nash, Gasol, and MWP (a fearsome set of players individually, but as a team? Let’s see). What else do you want? L.A. will be your team in a few years, big man. As a Laker fan (ever since the Shaq era), just stay.

He hasn’t even played a game, i’m not going to go into Orlando-style will he/won’t he crap already. Jeez.

  • pposse

if brook lopez does not pan out..what team will the nets trade him to? who will take on a brooke lopez max deal contract?

  • The Joker

Really? Judging by your name, I thought you were interested in golf.

    Just kidding.

  • shockexchange

That’s it! D12 has officially gotten my dander up! All these people (players, owners, etc.) involved in the game they love and acting entitled. This is not “basketball” people, this is the “Law of Supply And Demand” in play. And there’s only one book that can explain it to you.

  • PippenAintEasy

    Lemme guess, the “Shock Exchange”?

  • Caboose

    Surprise.

  • SuperEman24

The title of this article is misleading. Of course he wont sign an extension right awy. He will wait to become an UFA. For him to get more money than signing now a contract extension.

  • zogs19994

If this guy wont commit to THE LOS ANGELES LAKERS……THEN HE THINKS TOO HIGHLY OF HIMSELF

  • zogs19994

    Horrible joke

    Here we go again.

Why do people assume that everyone wants to play for the Lakers because of 16 rings. Kobe was traded there. He demanded out at one time. Dwight was traded there. He’s not committing yet. Several players have left the Lakers for more important things like Robert Horry’s daughter’s medical situation. Sessions and Brown have walked off. Matt Barnes went across the water with Lamar Odom. I mean they even changed Staples Center to Lob City in one year of being a more exciting than team than the Lakers. Dwight wanted to go to 22-44 Nets over the Lakers. EVERYTHING IS NOT ABOUT THE LAKERS. Some players want to be their own men. Ironic tow guys in the same free agent class subliminally diss the Lakers in the same year: Dwight and CP3

  • http://www.facebook.com/tee.chee.56 Tee Chee

Dwight Howard would rather play with Josh Smith, his #1 choice than play for the Lakers. Face it some players want to create their own fan base. For a guy that is the All-Stars leading vote getter, can’t see why he wouldn’t team up with fello Adidas guy Josh Smith and go for a ring elsewhere

  • http://www.facebook.com/tee.chee.56 Tee Chee

Yes he does, high enough to know he was traded to the Lakers, but ultimately the free agency is up to him to make, not the Lakers ( or Kobe fans). He didn’t even buy that $20 million house.. He’s in a hotel. What else are you delusional fans thinking

  • shutup

HAHAHAHA Lakers fans this dude is your headache now, every time Kobe decides not to pass, you guys gotta wonder if this baby is going to change his mind and hold your teams future hostage.

  • shutup

yeah the 48 Laws of Power

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

by saying he’s not ready to commit to the Lakers I assume that means, he’s signing a new contract with them in the next day or two.

  • http://www.reverbnation.com/savagemuzicgroup T-Ray

Don’t remind me hopefully the Larry O’Brian will serve as the pain killer for this headache.

  • LakeShow

    18-13-2.2… i’ll take the headache.

  • LakeShow

Love your pic btw shutup. I was screaming like a lil girl in the bar when that kick went down.

  • Sunny

Question: Doesn’t he get more money if he allows his current contract to expire before resigning? Or does that not apply in this case?

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

he can get more years and thus more money by letting it expire, yes.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

    Big Blue all day everyday.

  • shutup

I watched it at a Station Casino and let me tell you I was like the only Silva fan there, well maybe out of like 200 there were 5 of us and it went so quiet when it happened except for the 5 of us, people were already pissed after Jones beat Bader I couldn’t stop smiling.

  • bike

Everything hinges on them winning it all. Dwight is the future and the rest of that starting five are the present. He has to be wondering what that team will look like 3-5 years down the road.

  • LakeShow

    LMAO. Awesome.
    So you a Jones guy?
    I’m not big on him.
He’s very very good, but just don’t dig on him all that much.
You here about Silva taking the fight with American Psycho?? lulz… good luck Bonnar.

  • zogs19994

    You my friend, are retarded

  • LakeShow

Better than most other franchises we can assume?….

  • bike

Oh yeah, best bet in the history of the league. The age of those guys is the only immediate concern.

  • Redd

I think he’s still aiming towards the Nets.

  • bike

Hollywood. Beautiful girls. Cool movie star fans. Big market with big visibility. To name a few other reasons besides mucho rings. You are right–not everyone wants to play there but that’s a pretty attractive location for a b-ball star.

  • LakeShow

I just don’t understand the people that are like “there’s no way he stays in LA.”
They can offer him more money, more chance to win, more media attention, more endorsement offers, and as good of weather as anywhere else….
    There’s a solid chance he’s staying boyo’s lol…

  • 1982

I saw him walking down the streets in Beverly Hills with an entourage like 2 months ago – I don’t think he needs anymore time to get used to this city.

  • http://twitter.com/MaxxFreeze Maxx Foxx ✅

I PRAY he scorns the Lakers and jumps over to Brooklyn and LA ends up with Brook Lopez and Marshon Brooks LMAO

He needs to just shut his trap and show what he can do here. We don’t play that Orlando crap here.

Everyone knows that already, yet they keep writing these dumb articles that he won’t commit.

  • Lloyd Roseman

Personally, I don’t trust Howard. I feel the Lakers made a mistake in trading for him and letting Andrew go. But only time will tell.

  • Mr.Zone 4

And the Lakers will still be better than the Nets….Joe Johnson overpaid ass not taking that Franchise anywhere

  • shutup

Was a big Jon Jones on his way up and even against Shogun, soured on him a bit now. Kinda hoping Vitor knocks him out tom, just to bring him down a peg, also so that way people stop comparing him to Silva. Don’t know what to think of this Bonnar vs Silva fight, except Bonnar has never been stopped (well beside Dr stoppage). Hope Silva makes short work of him, don’t really give Bonnar much of a chance seeing as Silva destroyed Griffin. Also Machida beat him so I know Silva will have inside info on what to do. Bonnar gets hit a lot, he can take it from most, but Silva is other-worldly when it comes to striking.

  • Rainman

actually Odom cried when he foudn out he was almost traded so…

  • yo are a hater

The lakers didn’t want to resign brown for that much money, sessions either cuz they had nash, Barnes went to the clippers cuz the lakers didn’t make an offer and Lamar was traded

  • Blake Oaklahoma Griffin

I completely disagree. More talk from dwight “superman” howard is just what LA is about.
    The more hype the better.

  • Kim Kardashian Fan

Did you just beg Dwight to stay in LA? Have some dignity.

  • roscoe

Why wouldn’t you trust dh12? i dont understand.

  • roscoe

idk detriot is an option. I mean who wouldn’t want to play with villanueva?

  • roscoe

What about inverse demand curves… what then?

  • hyperactive

  • Lloyd Roseman

I just don’t feel he’s the best choice. He’s still to indecisive. If things don’t go his way, if he doesn’t be that go to guy on the court, well… he just might get up and leave next year. I feel the Lakers should have taken more of a chance with Andrew Bymun. I believe Andrew will become a great center one day. I know he’s immature at times, but then so is Howard. Andrew wants to be that “go to guy” one day also, but I feel he would have waited until Koba day is up. Can Howard do the same. Again, only time will tell. I hope Howard will become the player that Laker’s fan and the Laker’s franchise need.

  • Unknown nigga

A re you a kim kardashian fan? Don’t be a drone all your pathetic life

  • Torres

People. . .there is no need to panic with this OVERBLOWN TIDBIT OF INFORMATION!! DH12 would be throwing away money if he didn’t wait until the next year when he turns into a free agent. Plus, do you pay for a car before test driving it?? It makes ALL THE SENSE IN THE WORLD to give him the opportunity to play with Kobe and this squad to see how it all works out before he commits to a long term contract. Have some faith in the positive points that are in the Lakers favor: playing in Los Angeles, playing for the Lakers and a contending team, plus playing with a number of formidable players that will take a lot of the pressure off his back to create his own opportunities on the court due to multiple options sharing the floor with him while he is on the floor.

  • roscoe

@hyperactive: Okay, so why does anyone have to sign a petition for AI to get back in the league.
Can’t he sign with any team bc he is a free agent?
He did not get banned from the NBA, did he?
What’s the deal hyperactive, are you spamming slam or something?

isn’t a nba player, a supposed competitor, someone who LOVES the game and learn about the Secret of it ? ( unselfishness, clutch/smart, team first, etc ) …

It seems like he just cares about his career as a money fountain, not accomplishing what he’s paid for … only blablabla … shut up, smash the boards and win as a team, then you’ll open your mouth.
