NBA to Start Punishing Floppers

by Marcel Mutoni@marcel_mutoni

As you know, Commissioner David Stern and the NBA are on the warpath against the disease that is flopping.

Fans and media hate it, and rightfully so. Stern has made it his mission to punish those who flop.

Pretty soon, the League will announce a policy that fully addresses the issue.

From the NY Times:

After years of complaints, the N.B.A. finally appears ready to outlaw flopping — the act of exaggerating contact to induce a foul call. League officials are still deliberating the specifics, but the policy will probably involve a postgame review, rather than an in-game ruling by referees, according to a spokesman.

The most likely penalty will be a fine. Whether the league will increase fines for repeat offenders, or even suspend habitual floppers, is not yet clear. The new rules are expected to be finalized in the next few weeks and instituted for the coming season. Making flopping an in-game infraction has also been discussed, but it would be tough to determine without the benefit of replay. It would also place a greater burden on referees, who gathered this week for their annual training camp.

Vlade Divac must be rolling over in his grave.

They should get Nic Batum to punish offenders, I heard he doesn’t like flopping.

  • shutup

    Bout damn time..

In some cases its pretty obvious. Players look for the contact all the time. Remember the Celtics-Heat series when Paul piers got foul out off the game.

I think NBA should go back to hand checking they grown men let them play like it making the NBA look soft

  • nick

They should also let them slap off hand checks like Mike used to do. That being an offensive foul is beyond bogus.

    Clippers are gonna be broke.

This is a waste of time. So what happens when somebody gets fined for taking a legitimate charge? Just another attempt to limit defensive minded players and speed up the game.

Max is the biggest hater of all sports fans.

“place a greater burden on the referees?” that’s complete crap, they’re paid to ref the games, how is making a call a burden? Simple way to outlaw flopping is to not give the flopper the call. If you’re repeatedly losing the ball or getting beat on defense you’ll learn not to flop. Going at these guys pockets is only gonna cause NBAPA issues.

Ehhhh.. This is going to get dicey.

  • ThaWindy

Clippers are gonna be so broke it ain’t even funny. Will be interesting to see whether they’ll penalize the stars like Manu and CP3 just as much as the lesser known players.

    finally..! amen!

  • http://twitter.com/_DFrance DFrance

Blake and the Clips definitely give them a run for their money.

  • http://twitter.com/_DFrance DFrance

They should also get rid of the charge/block semi circle. That’s the biggest assistance to a flopper.

    Chris Bosh, watch out!

  • roscoe

    Thank you NBA

punish the whole SAN ANTONIO SPURS TEAM!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • CocoaDough

Manu Ginobili should be fined before the season even starts for all his previous flops

Fines seem completely unnecessary. Call it a foul and either change possession if committed by the offense, or a free throw if on defense. Sort of a “reverse” foul.

Get rid of the zone defenses and touch fouls first. Then hold the refs accountable for the flops. Players are going to do whatever you allow them to get away with. If the refs stop calling it the players will stop doing it.
