Dirk Nowitzki Calls New Flopping Penalties ‘a Bunch of Crap’

The newly-announced financial penalties for NBA players that the League deems to have flopped are an understandably divisive issue. Despite the players’ approval of the new rules – no matter how wildly misguided that may be – there has been pushback. The union has filed a grievance against the NBA, Blake Griffin painted the penalties as little more than a cash grab, and now Dirk Nowitzki has some colorful language to explain his feelings on the matter. Per the Dallas Morning News: “I never looked at myself as a big flopper,’ Nowitzki said. ‘If you play me physical then, obviously, I got to sell the call and get to the (free-throw) line. That’s just part of the game. We’ll have to see how they enforce that. I think it’s a bunch of crap to be honest with you. Are they going to come back after a game and fine you for flopping? That’s tough to do to me.’ Commissioner David Stern, in Europe for the NBA’s preseason-opening games, was at the Mavericks’ appearance to dedicate an outdoor basketball court at an east Berlin playground and he defended the league’s decision to start getting tough on acting jobs. [...] ‘Actually, many players have said, that’s great,’ Stern said about the reaction he’s gotten so far. ‘Now we can make the game about basketball talent rather than acting talent. I think the players association has a different perspective. I guess they like acting. But we think we have the greatest athletes in the world playing at a very high pace and they should be rewarded for that great play and they shouldn’t cause the game to be decided on anything other than their basketball merits.’”

Q: What did the chicken say to the other chicken?

It’s a serious problem in the league. You don’t want to lose money? Don’t do it, it compromises the integrity of the game.

This is why not Jeff Van Gundy!!!!! You thought it would be so easy! Next step is the NFL is eliminating the extra point!! If you watch NBA on abc you’ll understand.

This is sad, seems players feel they need flopping.

And it’s a bad example for young players across America.

The penalty should affect the game. Not their wallets. Take 2 points of a player’s team if he flops. That’s actual incentive to stop flopping. Imagine commentators at the end of a close game.. “If only he hadn’t flopped, we wouldn’t be seeing the game so tight now.” They give two points for a goal tend, why not for a flop?

  • Marc

    *take 2 points off

I think it’s good that they are trying to get rid of flopping. I’m uncomfortable with giving post game fines as punishment though. Granted, I like the idea of reviewing it post game to assess whether it was truly a flop or not. All that being considered, I think the best strategy is to treat it similarly to flagrant foul calls. They can be reviewed post-game, and a point system can be implemented so that repeat offenders are the only ones who are punished, with suspensions.

How about just LET THE PLAY CONTINUE WITHOUT A CALL? Yeah, they should have the flopper pay the ref in cash, during the game. All players have to carry their wallets on them from now on. Stupid Fing NBA. “Fix” a probably by creating another one. Also, Dirk is talking about selling a foul that been committed by the defender. Is that also going to be included in this new rule? If so, the Truth might have to hang them up. I thought it was just when a defender oversells offensive contact.

  • barb

They have to start somewhere,it’s out of control and going on for too long.

  • barb

effective idea. Taking points off the game will wake up the offenders.

  • nick

please penalize manu and fisher. im so sick of those 2 dancing all over the place

“If you play me physical, then I have to sell the call” …after Nowitzki said this the NBA put out a statement saying “We rest our case”. lol stupid Dirk

  • choc chippie

maybe the NBA should fine refs who miss bad fouls too! So many bad fouls are missed that players sometimes feel that they have to accentuate their reactions in order to get a call. Flopping is an issue but really no worse than the bad ref issue. Bad or no calls can affect a game and ultimately a series or championship al a Le Bron’s foul on KD on the last shot of game 2 of the finals! Do something about that Stern (money chasing worm)!! I’d like to see him out there getting clotheslined like Blake or getting his fingers busted up like Kobe on a nightly basis….

  • Ace

How can you fine a player for selling a call? It happens in EVERY sport. I don’t like it, but it’s the players finding a competitive edge. They should fine the refs who can’t officiate the game properly. Should MLB fine catchers for framing a pitch?

  • greg

It’s going to be very difficult to analyze if it’s a flop or not. they can’t do it during the game and it’s going to be very hard to filter out true flops from regular plays.

Interesting that it’s Blake Griffin complaining and this guy:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XaiMkP2wOVg

Let me guess, DWade and Ginobli will be the next to speak out about this outrageous move by the NBA…

Great new I hate when people cause fake fouls. I love how D Wade does it he is a great actress he should win an Oscar.

What does Dirk know about defense? He’s never played any, Nowitzki should try limiting his comments to things he actually understands, like shooting, regardless of who else is open.
