Dwight Howard Says Kobe Bryant ‘Secretly’ Tutored Him While in Orlando

Though both players have denied that there was ever any discord among them, rumors persisted that Dwight Howard initially didn’t want to play for the Lakers due to Kobe Bryant. According to Howard, not only is he ready to learn from Bryant as much as he can, but their partnership began long before they were teammates. Reports SI: “The current Lakers center — who was known to have reservations about being overshadowed by Bryant before joining him — said their foundation is far more solid than most people realize. ‘What people don’t know is that this is one of the guys who I’ve been talking to for about four years now,’ Howard said. ‘And he has been an amazing help to me, just pushing me in ways — secretly because we played in the Eastern and Western Conference. But it’s been him just talking to me, showing me how to do certain things with my team and things like that.’ The goal, of course, is for Howard to be the best Howard he can be. Happy, healthy and — perhaps one day — a Hall of Famer. ‘I told [Bryant] as soon as I got here, ‘Hey, I want to be one of the greatest to ever play. I want you to push me every day,’ Howard said. ‘And he was like, ‘I’m going to push you, because I see something in you, and I want to make sure that I do my part.’ And I promised him that I’m going to do whatever I can do.’”

I believe the word you’re looking for is ‘taught’.

Kobe was the one who urged Dwight to do the superman bit for the dunk contest because he knew it would royally piss Shaq off.

“Kobe has been tutoring me for 4 years, but he was really mean on the phone, so i didn’t want to actually be his teammate until there were no other options” — Pretty Much.

I wonder if pro athletes really do have these deep conversations where they tell each other how they feel about everything. I’ve probably never had one of those, and no one that i know has had one either. Last semester my gpa was 4.0 and none of my friends pulled me aside and told me something like “You know what? you’ve worked hard. You deserve this. Enjoy it. Have some fun. I knew in my heart you had it in you.”

Maybe having supportive friends who tell you how awesome you are is pat of what makes you world class at what you do? Maybe that’s the kind of support you need to be a Hall of Famer?

Sorry but, maybe you should get better friends? I know when my buddy joined the Army and was leaving for boot camp, I told him I knew he could do it. Just keep his head down, work hard, and listen to the drill instructor. I’ve given advice to a lot of my friends and they’ve done the same for me.

Your group may be the type that feels like showing any human emotion is gay. I don’t know, but I see it a lot with the younger guys. You grow out of it.

It’s just a game. For entertainment. You shouldn’t “hate” anyone over a kid’s game.

Maybe you´re missing having friends, usually is what friends do, make you feel better, giving support. Ey is great experiencie to have friends.

I guess this revelation will shut the media’s mouths that Dwight and Kobe were at odds. Kobe is a fair guy when he sees talent … I am just happy that it worked out where he could benefit from some of the talent that other teams enjoyed that were not championship contenders to a point. Good for you, Kobe. That lets you know that all of the hype printed was pure speculation to create a scenario that didn’t exist.
