Dwyane Wade Calls Rajon Rondo Flagrant Foul a ‘Punk Play’

by Marcel Mutoni@marcel_mutoni

In the closing moments of yet another bitterly-fought game between the Miami Heat and Boston Celtics, a frustrated Rajon Rondo committed a hard foul on Dwyane Wade.

The Heat superstar did not appreciate being grabbed around the head area with two hands, and called out Rondo when talking to reporters. Wade said there’s no room in the game for that type of thing.

Rajon Rondo and Celtics head coach Doc Rivers, meanwhile, shrugged it off as little more than a hard foul in a tense, emotional and chippy game.

Per the Sun-Sentinel and Boston Herald:

“We’re in the NBA,” Wade said after the 120-107 win. “I got my kids watching, so I stopped myself, but it was a punk play. The league will take care of it.” I asked Wade if he said the P-word to Rondo when they were nose to nose. “I just did,” Wade said with a wink. “There’s a lot of cameras here.”

Why does something always seem to happen when Rondo and the Heat hook up? “You got to go ask him that, man. I have no idea,” Wade said. “I’m here to play basketball. It’s what we are. We’re basketball players. If you want to go do something else, then go do something else. Boxing and all those other things, this is not it. We’re basketball players here.”

The Boston Celtics and Miami Heat are scheduled to meet again three more times this season, and quite possibly in the Playoffs. In other words, Rajon Rondo and Dwyane Wade will get plenty of chances to lob insults at one another, which is fantastic.

The Heat and Celtics will resume their war on January 27 in Beantown.

When you break someone else’s nose during an all star game you can’t talk about somebody being a punk. Shut up Wade

  • hoodsnake

    Salty and sad…

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

He was going to throw the ball at him, but he stopped himself. Glad he did. No need for him to get a technical after Rondo lost his cool. Rondo was frustrated because the Heat were still able to keep them in check even after LeBron left the game. The best rivalry in the league just got better. With Ray Allen, the Heat can now score without LeBron and Wade being on the floor. Best team in the East without question. Their half court offense is a lot better.

pretty sure wade did the same thing to kobe in a allstar game….shut up

  • I AN LEGEND

Thought the reporter meant the other P-word

After the cheap fouls that lead to Rondo dislocating his elbow, and Kobe breaking his nose in the all star game, not to mention the inexplicable flagrant he took on Collison in the playoffs last year… Wade is more than qualified to speak on “punk plays.”

interesting that Wade, a guy known for being borderline dirty, is calling out other dirty players. pot, kettle, black.

  • spit hot fiyah

u think that was on purpose? hard foul yes, but all-star games get competetive too

First I was like, did Wade really call Rondo a Pen!s?

  • taz

Cheap fouls? Dude, Rondo pulled Wade down from behind! Let me pull you down, I bet the first thing you do is stretch your arm out. That’s what he did, he then fell on Rondo who himself stretched his arm out and dislocated his ellbow. If all, it’s his own fault, should cheap-pull Wade down from behind on the first place. Stop with this fairy tales. You Boston fans are somethimg else.. But I give you this, you stil believe in your team, thats cool, but even you should give credit where credit is due, cause you guys are making yourself look really dumb out there.

  • Taz

    Shouldn’t*

  • Brownjesus

Just last year he tackled Collison, shoving Hamilton, and broke Kobe’s nose. I think its safe to say he’s more than just borderline dirty

  • Brownjesus

    shoved**

  • pposse

breaking kobes nose comes to mind

  • http://twitter.com/_DFrance DFrance

Read the other comments on here, this is not just a “Salty Boston fan” thing, Wade is a chump. Even if you can try to explain away the Rondo elbow thing, what’s the excuse for what he did to Collison?

  • payuli

so wade calling himself a worse punk than rondo cause what he did to kobe during the all-star game last year was worse. he injured kobe in an ALL-STAR GAME!!! who does that? really dwyane? haha you’re just jealous of kobe and rajon!

  • Irishway’s

Rondo is in no way a punk he commited the the hard foul then got in his face. What!! yeah I did that….;) That in definition is not a Punk. On the other hand it is a little early to be closeling people.

  • The Mauve Avenger

    That’s a perfect thumbnail.

  • MightyMouse

Does anybody else remember when DWade pretty much tackled Rondo to ground in the playoffs and hyperextended his elbow..?

  • VanCityBBall

didnt he elbow Rip to the floor last season? and break rondos arm (possibly not on purpose but do you think rondo would believe that?) break Mambas nose? but even coming off as a C’s guy i found this embarrassing, not the foul itself but what happend after. you lost the game take it like a man

  • EnriquePC

he’s just talking nuisance like the cartoon!

  • http://twitter.com/Jzakoni Verified Account

They were looking sharp out there

  • http://twitter.com/Jzakoni Verified Account

That Hamilton shove was some bullshit

  • http://twitter.com/Jzakoni Verified Account

Lol that’s south side Chicago ball

  • http://twitter.com/Jzakoni Verified Account

Cheap fouls & cheap thrills for everyone

  • Redd

Call Wade a hypocrite & maybe you’re even right but I respect the fact the first thing that came to mind was his children in that situation. Much respect, I still hate the Heat.

  • vtrobot

Kerr: “This looks really bad.” Really? That’s “really bad” these days? Yeah, DWade’s lucky to still be alive.

  • KipSmithers

Probably still mad about the elbow takedown in the playoffs.

  • http://twitter.com/bjollz Björn Atli Davíðsson

I seem to remember Wade getting unnecessarily tangled up with Rondo which ended with the latter dislocating his elbow in a playoff series. Wade is probably the dirtiest superstar in the game.

  • initbruv

    Lol

  • http://twitter.com/_DFrance DFrance

I bet it was more “let me not get suspended on opening night” and less “my kids are watching”

  • dwade flops so hard

this wasnt even a hard foul! nobody went to the floor, nobody was hurt. rondo grabbed him and held onto him for an intentional foul, but it was not overly aggressive. plus do you guys not remember wade getting away with an offensive foul a couple minutes earlier when he hooked rondos face with opposite hand during a lay up? that was one of many calls that went heats way. this was a fair payback that wasn’t even deadly. sit down wade, you have done way worse.

“competitive” is not the same as “violent”, at least not in basketball anyway

  • C-Mac

The Rondo foul was immature, but it wasn’t a dangerous play. He grabbed Wade to stop his momentum, but at no point was he trying to take him down. I’m not here to apologise for Rondo’s actions; he was like a petulant little kid out there at times. But I think it’s a bit rich for Wade to criticise him when he makes plays like the Collison takedown last year, which are way more dangerous and likely to result in an injury IMO.

  • bigA

I agree, it was immature of Rondo. The first quarter of that game was a joy to watch. How about Lebron, he was terrific, I loved his decision making. Allthough his cramps are suspect.

  • http://bostonprosports.com/ seogus

What about when Wade dislocated Rondo’s elbow with this cheap take-down?! http://celticshub.com/2011/05/08/video-wade-escapes-condemnation/

  • R32

I’m the biggest Miami fan, but i don’t think that was a “dirty” play, just chippy one. Get over it Wade.

  • LakeShow

    IT STARTS!

  • http://twitter.com/tweedstereo iain

It’s also kind of a punk move to make a hard move to the basket when you’re up 11 with 20 seconds to go. You’re going to dunk it just to rub in the victory? D-Wade is comical in his lack of self awareness.

  • http://twitter.com/tweedstereo iain

Wade is a cheap shot artist and a major punk. Why is he driving hard to the hoop up 11 with 20 seconds to play? He should expect to get hit trying to add in a meaningless dunk with the game already in hand.

  • http://twitter.com/tweedstereo iain

Really bad Steve, would be like when MJ punched in the face during practice. Give me a break. Also, Wade flails more on play where nobody hits than on that foul.

  • http://twitter.com/tweedstereo iain

Wait a sec, Rondo pulled Wade down from behind and dislocated his own elbow in the process? Taz, you clearly have zero clue of how that play actually went down.

  • http://twitter.com/tweedstereo iain

By that same token I wonder if he thinks about the example he sets for his kis every time he jumps up and down whining at the refs for not getting calls. His kids must throw some crazy tantrums with D-Wade as their role model! lol

  • http://twitter.com/tweedstereo iain

The game WAS lost by the time Wade decided to go for a showboat dunk up 11 with 20 seconds to go. Just because the Celtics got outplayed doesn’t mean they should let that dude rub their faces in it.

  • http://twitter.com/tweedstereo iain

Yep, Wade’s left foot was behind Rondo’s feet and D-Wade came across Rondo chest and drove him to the ground. Dirty player.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

Shot clock was going to expire a few seconds before the game clock so what would you prefer, a drive to the basket for a dunk or a 3 point shot that may go in and add to the lead even more?

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

Rondo has some punk in him, but this was just a move out of frustration. He continues to be the only guy on his team capable of playing on LeBron, Wade and Bosh’s level. Almost had a triple double and wasn’t having his best night.
