JR Smith: ‘I Would Rather Be A Starter’

JR Smith said recently that he is ready to become a starter. With Iman Shumpert recovering from knee surgery, he may get his wish, but not for a full season (via NY Post): “‘I’d rather start. I’ve been playing [eight] years, coming off the bench,’ Smith said yesterday. ‘Whether it stays [that way] or goes, I’m going to be same person I am. I prefer to start. I’d rather be a starter. If not, I understand that.’ Smith could never crack the Nuggets starting lineup full time. In 538 career games, he has just 130 starts, but 81 of them came in his first two seasons with New Orleans. Smith is listed in the training camp guide as ‘one of the game’s premier sixth men.’ He started just once with the Knicks last season. ‘It gets frustrating after a while,’ Smith said. ‘People saying, “he’s a sixth man, sixth man, sixth man’’ when you believe you’re a starter. But you have to understand, it’s a team game and have to put individual goals aside.’ Nevertheless, Smith came into training camp — for the first time — with starting in mind. ‘My goal was come in here and be a starter and try to play with the other four guys on the floor,’ he said. “As of right now we’ll see how up in the air it is. The last seven years coming into camp, I knew I was going to be Sixth Man. It’s a different approach this year. It’s better to think of it like that.’”

No you don’t. The Knicks already have 1 ball-dominant/shoot everything in sight player starting, playing both of them at the same time would be a disaster.

Would rather Have Ronny coming off the bench till Shump comes back, plays like Shump so it wont be a big transition when Shump makes his way to the starting squad.

why not go back to china. there u can start, shoot 13 threes a game and not practice all season

This team is going to be dysfunctional.

and still fail to make the playoffs lol

thats bullshit , ny needs him as a scorer coming off the bench, period. as soon as brewer recovers fully from his little injury they should let smith be the 6th man. it might make sense to let smith start when shumpert comes back to let shumpert provide that energy push off the bench.

Brewer should start, I think you would rather not be behind in the start of the game cause of shooting poor shots. Brewer won’t shoot, he’ll play his D & he takes good shots when he should.

I would start JR, if he does take his game to the next level and actually play like a Starting SG in this league then the Knicks could be the 2nd best team in the east…but im a Heat Fan so bring him off the bench if u want lol

I don’t see why there’s anything wrong with this mentality? Shouldn’t he believe he’s the best guy for the job? Confidence breeds success.
