Kobe Bryant Cares About Winning–Not Being a Good Teammate

After spending a few days last week lighting up former teammates who he felt never lived up to their end of the bargain, Kobe Bryant explained in detail the thinking behind his style of leadership. From KB’s Facebook page: “Leadership is responsibility. There comes a point when one must make a decision. Are YOU willing to do what it takes to push the right buttons to elevate those around you? If the answer is YES, are you willing to push the right buttons even if it means being perceived as the villain? Here’s where the true responsibility of being a leader lies. Sometimes you must prioritize the success of the team ahead of how your own image is perceived. The ability to elevate those around you is more than simply sharing the ball or making teammates feel a certain level of comfort. It’s pushing them to find their inner beast, even if they end up resenting you for it at the time. I’d rather be perceived as a winner than a good teammate. I wish they both went hand in hand all the time but that’s just not reality. I have nothing in common with lazy people who blame others for their lack of success. Great things come from hard work and perseverance. No excuses. This is my way. It might not be right for YOU but all I can do is share my thoughts. It’s on YOU to figure out which leadership style suits you best.”

If Shaq was a good teammate he wouldve kicked your ass 10 years ago

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Michael Jordan is a complete and utter asshole. He stopped signing “free” autographs while he was still playing, instead opting to eat lunch or something random with a random fan every once in a while (same thing Ken Griffey Jr started doing) – my admiration for Michael Jordan comes purely as a basketball player. Same with Kobe. Both guys, from everything I’ve heard, are complete dick heads away from the court. Jordan moreso than Kobe, and just about everyone in league history.

  • http://twitter.com/AjpDos Allen Powell

Kobe regularly refused to discuss Shaq when Shaq first left the team, and when he did discuss him he spoke kindly. Smush only addressed Kobe after Kobe was going around belittling everyone he played with those two years as if those “scrubs” didn’t have the Lakers up 3-1 against the Suns before Kobe went into chuck mode and then quit.
Like several people have said, why is Kobe concerned with Smush and Kwame. Does he think that if belittles them enough then everyone will stop noting how much the Lakers sucked those two years? Sorry that’s not happening. At least not as long as we have concrete examples of players playing with similar talent and having more success.

  • Kadavour

@twitter-468547200:disqus you think it’s a matter of Kobe pursuing this discourse, or media personnel asking these questions? What does the journalist in you say?

  • pposse

everyone already knows that MJ is all about his money, the only thing i ever did and would do if i seen MJ like the one time in the club is try and shake his hand. He did that for free. You should watch the video on youtube with Chamillionairs take on the great one hahah

  • roscoe

just beating the drum the media nor kb24 haters like u won’t.

  • roscoe

Here is a fair question: what’s your objective @ the end of the day w/ ur kb24 criticism? i think ur passion is recognized as “hate” by some.

4 me w/ kd its 2 see him succeed, & as u knw imo, he’s doing sme things we’ve discussed dat ain’t helping d’cause.

  • Datkid

they weren’t anywhere near as cruel as Kobe and to an extent MJ are to theirs is the point i was making.

  • MikeC.

I’m not trying to defend Kobe the player because I hate the Lakers and I think Kobe is a chucker and gets a free pass too often for his declining D.kobe, the every day dude is likely just as messed up as the child celebrities.

  • http://twitter.com/Jzakoni Verified Account

hey don’t get me wrong. I’m a kobe supporter all the way…. but he was still learning back then and shaq was unstoppable

  • bike

Sorry man. That kind of thing can scar somebody for life. Just another example of how we worship their feats on the court or on the field and we always assume they are of great character away from the sport.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

My objective is to tell the truth about every article I comment on. The criticism is warranted. A man respects another man. Kobe didn’t respect Smush. Regardless of how bad of a player he was or how he carried himself. If you call yourself a leader, you set the standard and get others to buy into that example if it’s worth following. You bring others along with you. Kobe didn’t do that. I see a problem there. Simple. Durant working out with LeBron hasn’t kept him from doing anything, that’s why there is no good reason for you or anyone else to have an issue with it. How has it hurt his cause? How did it hurt last season after he worked out with him for more than just one day (which is how much he worked with him this summer)? He won a 3rd scoring title in a row and got to the Finals. They got beat by a better team. LeBron played out of his mind. James Harden didn’t show up. No shame there. There are no mind games. LeBron isn’t in his head. He’s just the best player in the world. Durant is 2nd. You can’t psyche out the 2nd best player in the world. Explain how working out with LeBron is hurting him if you can.

  • roscoe

truth. it takes a stronger person to walk away.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

Again, you don’t know the meaning of the word “hater”. Just like a few others here.

  • LakeShow

    While this is true,…
Actually that is all I have to say.

  • LakeShow

When Smush Parker is your 3rd leading scorer on a playoff team you blame management and no one else.
Kobe created success for himself by threatening that trade.
Sounds like the truest of winners to me.

  • LakeShow

    Smart move huh?
    Winning move, that’s for sure.
Made the Lakers brass re-think their thoughts didn’t it?

  • LakeShow

I knew you were a power abuser at least at one point. I could always tell.
Glad you changed your evil ways though man.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

No, made Kobe sound worse than Dwight did this past season. He would be in a Clippers or Bulls uniform if Gasol hadn’t have been gifted to them.

  • z

This is a genuinely interesting perspective on why kob’s had so much difficulty connecting with others throughout his life. That being said im gonna hafta disagree with the assertion of black self hate. As for the rest of this thread i gotta say its disappointing to see the way so many of yall conveniently ignore facts that dont dovetail with your own perceptions of the situation. To be sure this lack of intellectual integrity is very prevelant in US society nowadays but its just doubly disappointing to see it so clearly affect so many cats in whom i can sense potential for genuine intelligence. As for kobe i long ago recognized him for what he is: an untimely man, born into the wrong era of human history, and thus wont be appreciated in his own time. Get over it, laker fans lol the hate and envy is just too strong

  • MikeC.

It’s impossible to compare the eras. Russell might have been an a-hole, but the only thing covered in the papers was box scores. Winning is the great freshener. It covers up a lot of stank.

  • nhm

i just wish that smush and kobe meet face to face sometime soon… man it up instead of word war.. not neccessarily violent actions, but a little sparring would fine. lol.

  • MikeC.

MikeC. is now a fan of the shockexchange and everyone that refers to themselves in 3rd person screen name.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

LOL the reasoning he threatened the trade was in response to not succeeding, it wasn’t a pre-preemptive strike for success – I mean, unless you are you, and HAVE to find a way for Kobe to not look like a hypocrite.
    .
Let’s just say it how it is though, Kobe is trying to make himself look as good as possible. So he is trying to deflect attention from him speaking out on a guy who hasn’t been his teammate in what, 6 years? I mean, see this for what it is. Kobe is a dick, who just realized how much of a dick he looks like, so he’s trying to dress up like a vagina.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

Kobe got lucky with Gasol being traded to LA. He created nothing for himself. The Lakers pulled of a heist move. Again, you show yourself to be nothing more than a Lakers lover. No ability to understand or reason at all.

  • http://twitter.com/AjpDos Allen Powell

I’m talking about as a teammate. If you’re one of the best players on a team it’s real easy to be shady to sorry cats because no one is going to check your behavior. I did that at one point. That’s the only time I had any semblance of power to abuse. Well, that’s not true. I’ve bullied the weak at times as well. It’s a sucker move.

  • roscoe

ur objective is to speak the truth, okay, cool. although u put a lot of bait out there 4 me to chomp on I will pass bc u knw what my answr is re: kd.
don’t worrying though, i will continue 2 throw my jabs until i c kd change or kd proves me wrong.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

While I don’t think that Royce White’s illness or self hate for Blacks belongs here, I do think Kobe’s background may have a lot to do with how he treats other players who were born and raised here and grew up in a different way than he did. Outside of the game of basketball, there probably isn’t a lot of commonalities there. As a rookie he didn’t really hang out with his teammates not only because of how young he was, but I’m sure their different upbringings played a factor as well. Most of these guys were either in poverty or not far from it before they got to the league. Kobe was the son of a professional basketball player. Most people are products of their environment. Kobe’s environment doesn’t have much in common with the environment of most of the other players he plays with and against.

  • bike

One time I remember I see Kobe at airport. I approached him for autograph to sign. He looked at me the same I look at camel shit I think.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

You have no response to what I said about KD. What this boils down to is some idea you have that KD should stop working with LeBron. You can’t give me one good reason why he should. Except that you would like him to stop. You can’t give me one example of how this has been bad for him. That’s why you won’t take the bait. Because you don’t have a good response that will challenge what I said. There’s no need for KD to change. So you’ll continue to complain about it. He doesn’t have to prove you wrong because you have no ground to stand on with your complaint. What’s keeping him from winning a championship and from being the best player right now is LeBron James. It’s not the fact that he practices with him. It’s the fact that LeBron James exists. Whether they practiced together or not, LeBron would be LeBron and KD would have to get through him.

  • LakeShow

How would Kobe asking for a trade in less than a month long ordeal be worse than Dwight’s belly aching the last 2 years. lol. Your so biased it’s ridiculous.

  • LakeShow

    Not following what your saying.
    I disagree i’m sure though.

Minus the part about Kobe being a dick. He’s an ass clown.

  • LakeShow

Yeah your right, that makes allot of sense. Kobe asks to be traded, because they are not providing him with enough talent to win the championships he desires, so he asks for a trade. They go and get him Gasol and he is happy and stays…..
    Oh wait..
    Nope your wrong.
So yeah, Kobe was responsible for that.

  • LakeShow

Yeah I have met him at the air port also and a couple other times at Staples. (met, meaning said ‘whats up’) He is rude. He’s not a conversational individual. Still my favorite ball player haha.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

    Actually, that’s exactly what happened.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

Kobe didn’t need 2 years. He just needed one day to want to be traded, and then decide not to leaving everyone confused. Dwight never really stopped wanting to be traded. Find the facts. He only opted in because he wanted to make people around him happy.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

You calling someone biased is like Kobe telling JR Smith he shoots too much.

  • roscoe

okay chief… keep drinking the cool – aid. carrying bron bron’s back pack, bringing orange slices, & paying for pizza parties, while making sure to hug the world is great for children but not competitors in my humble @ss opinion. Take the “I love KD” t shirt off. KD needs to look within to get the gold ball and its funny how hard you front for him that maybe your on the payroll or wish to be.
what’s even more funny is how u pitball kb24, lol, but support a finals failure, kd, bc he was given or earned some progated awards. if you ask bball fans who won the last 10 scoring or mvp awards 99% would not be able to answer, but if you asked who won the last 10 titles 99% would.
Rings count & the other awards are future garage sell items.
The mental side of the game is just as important as everything else, if not more.
What flavor cool-aid are drinking today?

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=509819249 Gaurav P.

Kobe openly called Shaq fat and out of shape. He made it a point to name Shaq when he won the ring in 2010. He avoided mentioning Shaq in his early years after the Shaq trade because his reputation was at an all time low and it would have made it worse.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=509819249 Gaurav P.

Again, you’re ignoring the context. Kobe was coming off a rape trial, a Finals loss that was being blamed on him, and he was the most hated man in all sports in 2004. He was trying to regain endorsements and fan support…its why he didn’t start saying anything controversial until about the time he won his first ring post Shaq.

  • z

In all honesty for you to say that kobe’s not as successful as anybody in league history…i mean wow just wow. I cant value your opinion much after ridiculousness like that (even if you are an admirer of malcolm.x)theres a small handful of players who kob doesnt deserve comparisns to (mj bill russ wilt, after that its a fair debate with anyone who’s played). Impartiality is a virtue in these debates, remember that.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=509819249 Gaurav P.

Why? Do you think those guys were happy sitting around losing? Lebron openly admitted jumping to Miami because he didn’t think the Cavs roster that was assembled could beat the Celtics. All-time great players should not be stuck with inept players surrounding them. I mean seriously, Luke Walton played heavy minutes for the Lakers at Bryant’s physical peak as a player. Have you seen that 05-07 Lakers roster? Half the players are not even in the league anymore, and if they are, they are bench guys.

The second best player on those teams was Lamar Odom. Read that again.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

LeBron never asked to be traded playing on a team whose second best player was Larry Hughes. With that team, he got to the Finals after getting past a top notch Pistons team that was still in their prime. Kobe’s second best player on those bad teams was Lamar Odom who was a much better player than Hughes. KG’s closest teammate in talent in Minnesota after Marbury got traded was Latrell Sprewell and an old Sam Cassell…he waited 6 seasons before he had teammates that were capable of helping him go deep into the playoffs. He lost 7 times in the first round and the 2 seasons before he got traded to Boston, he wasn’t in the playoffs. Never said one word about wanting to be traded. He took all of the pressure on himself. Even got to the point where he cried in an interview with John Thompson on TNT. Kobe has 2 bad seasons and wants out. You act like Lamar was a scrub lol. He averaged 15 and 10 his first season in LA. 15 and 9 the second season. Pretty respectable numbers.

  • TBRK

dog, Kobe just dropped about 30 different gems in that….was that written or all off the cuff?? dude is brilliant man, flat out

  • LakeShow

You were confused? Dude you make me laugh so hard.
You were confused when Kobe said he wanted to be traded? LMAO man… I wasn’t confused, I knew exactly what was going on. Thought everyone else did too.
2ndly, “You calling someone biased is like Kobe telling JR Smith he shoots too much” That sentence explain YOU so well. Too well… You think Kobe is a glorified JR Smith. You think that he is Horry JR… You are the equivalent of the Shock Exchange in unabashed Kobe hatred. Congrats dude.

  • brandan evans

this is why i love Kobe, cause this man wanna win no matter what!
if u dont put in the work then he dont need you!
u dont think Jordan did the same thing? Teammates was scared of Jordan because he will get on them if they dont play well. They wasnt scared of Phil they was scared of Jordan.
and Kobe is the same way!
i love it!! and to all u people saying Kobe is this and Kobe is that, one thing u cant say is that he is a loser. he is a winner.

  • Mike Jones

Kobe is nothing but a glorified role player, there is a reason he has only won one MVP even though he is held in such high regard as a top 5 player ever.

First three titles kobe give the ball to shaq and know your role. Then once shaq left the lakers, wade won with shag, belittling kobes achievements.

I could go on and on about Kobe and how he is undeserved of his accolades. But dont get me wrong he can play the game of basketball.

But he can also rape girl and be a shit team mate, and he is held up as the poster boy of the 2000′s.

But hey it doesnt matter he is a winner

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

A person goes to extremes when they are incapable of basic rational thinking. Your love of everything Lakers related leaves you unable to think rationally. Which is why you compare me to Shock Exchange. If you were capable of basic reading comprehension, you would have understood the analogy I made. You are as biased as anyone on this site about your precious Lakers. Kobe shoots a lot. JR Smith shoots a lot. Did I compare them? No. I simply said that one person who is widely known for shooting a lot telling another is the same as you, the most biased dude here, telling me I’m biased. You never even pointed out what my bias is. Which is hard to do because I’ve shown no bias. I’ve said nothing about disliking your guy Kobe Bryant.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

Also, the confusion with most fans was not him saying he wanted to be traded. It was him saying he didn’t want to be just hours later. You knew exactly what was going on, what exactly was that? Please let us all know. Those of us who aren’t inside Kobe’s mind as you appear to be. Since you knew what was going on in his head. What we all knew was that he was seen on tape saying he wanted Bynum gone and Jason Kidd there. He quieted down after Gasol arrived like a child crying for something and stopping immediately after getting it. That let those of us who are actually capable of being objective know that he wasn’t fit to try to carry a team the way a leader should for too long. Face the facts dude. This is a man who refused to shoot the ball to prove a point in the middle of a regular season game. Same man who refused to shoot again in a playoff game that resulted in his team giving up a 3-1 series lead and later on he said he was just trying to run the offense on TNT when Barkley asked him about it. What can you say to refute what I’ve said? Nothing at all.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

If your objective was to sound as ridiculous as possible, you succeeded.
