Smush Parker Says Kobe Bryant Didn’t Allow Him to Speak

by Marcel Mutoni@marcel_mutoni

After Kobe Bryant ripped him to shreds, the media somehow managed to locate Smush Parker for his thoughts on the matter. Parker fired back, and then some.

Smush — who says he’s been playing overseas for the last few years — told plenty of stories about his days as Kobe’s teammate. Let’s just say it wasn’t the greatest experience.

Parker claims that Bryant didn’t allow him to address him off the court, that Bryant wouldn’t build relationships with other Lakers, and that Smush stopped passing his famous teammate the ball at one point.

From Hard 2 Guard Radio (via Larry Brown Sports):

“I’m lost for words. It makes me blush. For my name to still come out of that man’s mouth? It makes me blush,” Parker said. “The two years in LA were a blessing to me,” he said. “People who ask me how it was playing for the Los Angeles Lakers. People ask me how it was playing with Kobe Bryant. I said in 2008 that it was an overrated experience.” Though Parker termed playing with Kobe “overrated,” he respects the five-time champion’s game. He just doesn’t like his personality. “You can’t knock the man’s legacy, you can’t knock what he’s done in basketball. His work ethic is tremendous. There’s not an ounce of hate in my blood whatsoever. The guy can play basketball — you’ve seen that throughout his career. What I don’t like about him is the man that he is. His personality. How he treats people. I don’t like that side of Kobe Bryant.”

“I had a workout with the Lakers, beat all the guards out for the starting position, earned a spot on the team. Midway through the first season, I tried to at least have a conversation with Kobe Bryant — he is my teammate, he is a co-worker of mine, I see his face every day I go in to work — and I tried to talk with him about football. He tells me I can’t talk to him. He tells me I need more accolades under my belt before I come talk to him. He was dead serious.” Smush says the talking they did was strictly on the court. “We’re teammates, we talk basketball on the court. [Our talks were] about getting him the ball pretty much.”

This back-and-forth through the press amounts to little more than petty nonsense, and is beneath both guys. But it sure is funny.

Long live the Kobe/Smush beef.

Too funny…we’ve always known kobe is arrogant so this doesn’t come as too much of a surprise. That’s a total jerk move though. Lol

  • BOUNCE LEGEND

THAT SOUNDS LIKE KOBE ALRIGHT. SMUSH AINT THE FIRST ONE TO DISS KOBE’S PERSONALITY. MAYBE THATS WHY HE GOT BOOED AT HOME IN PHILLY DURING THE ALL STAR GAME

Kobe definitely threw Smush under the bus, to be fair, Smush Parker did suck donkey balls.

  • LoganMarada

I don’t have a problem with Kobe slamming Smush Parker’s less than average game, but that is a bit sad when he’s “too good” to even talk to his teammates. How about team chemistry?

Great player. Not the kind of person you’d want to hang out with. At all. Arrogance is one thing but the fact that he actually told another grown man not to talk to him until he had more accolades? That’s pretty wild. You could be the most fanatical Kobe Bryant fan and you couldn’t justify this at all. I’d rather take Jordan punching Kerr in the face, calling him later and apologizing than having Kobe tell a teammate not to talk to him until he “had more accolades”. My guess is that the only reason people deal with Kobe is because he’s a great player. I’ll be interested in seeing how close he stays with past teammates after he retires. Dwight would do better talking with Nash about being a leader. What’s crazy is that Kobe does work for the homeless in LA yet this is the kind of stuff he does too. Complex dude. Smush had some talent. Kobe could have taken him under his wing. Instead, this is what he did. I’ve heard since he’s been in the league that he was an odd dude. This is more proof. For anyone who will come along and say that being liked by teammates is overrated as long as you win, it is possible to do both. Plenty of legends have done it.

Imagine being a rookie getting selected by the Lakers. You probably had Kobe posters on your wall. You’re excited to play with him. You go up to him your first practice and this is what he says. This may be what happens when you completely copy another man’s behavior along with how he plays (Jordan). Just a strange individual. We also have to remember that he grew up mostly in Italy then came back to Philly. Italy and Philadelphia is a weird mix. This must be the kind of dude you end up with. Most of these guys in the league grew up in the inner city. Kobe doesn’t have that background. But regardless of what background he has, at some point, he should have learned how to interact with guys without coming off as a punk.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

Interested in seeing how people will try to defend him on this one. “Kobe has 5 rings.” As if that’s the answer to everything. I almost forgot how he threw Gasol under the bus after OKC eliminated them last postseason. Who has issues with Pau Gasol who seems like one of the nicest people you could meet? Like Smush said, you can’t deny what he’s done on the floor but I don’t ever see him sitting down with other legends and talking about the good old days. Just seems like he’s in his own little world.

  • bike

It’s not that unusual for the most elite athletes to come across as arrogant dicks. To be the best they have to be insanely competitive and they expect their teammates to do the same. Lance Armstrong and Jordan are two other examples of guys who could be arrogant jerks to teammates.

  • T-Money

kobe is one of the greatest players of all time. kobe is a f-ck boy. these statements are mutually exclusive and not correlated.

  • Caboose

Just a quick poll to see the quality of the SLAM readership: up vote this if you think what Kobe did was right. Down vote if it was wrong.

  • Sean B

Hands down… this is why I’m sure all players would choose to PLAY WITH LeBron over Kobe. Of course both are great players, but I think LeBron is the ultimate teammate. Kobe has shown repeatedly… he cares about self first, team second.

  • averysmith

I hear what S to the M-USH is saying; however, it does come off as more like hazing than arrogance. To be fair, hazing IS a manifestation of arraogance but it has a purpose; however twisted. In a strange way Kobe may have been trying to motivate the rookie. That said, that’s no excuse for K to the O-BE’s treatment of Mr. Parker.

You’d never hear of this on the Spurs:

Tiago: “Mr. Duncan, do you like parfaits?”
Duncan: “You can’t talk to me, son.”
Tiago: “Huh? I’m just trying to be friends…”
Duncan: “We can’t be friends. You gotta grab a rebound before we can be friends.”

  • KSupreme

You must see all those guys everyday and know their personalities. Give me a break buddy. Kobe is my dude, but this was a dick move. I’m not trying to back him up. Even Shaq says the same thing. But don’t act like you know every players personality from what u see on tv.

What no one wants to admit is that being kb24 entails having many ppl, even teamates, and coaches trying to exploit him. The real world has ppl that will gossip about everything & anything to make a dollar off someone famous. His life and basketball career is completely different than your less than successful high school & college glory days fellas. TMZ is a perfect example of the exploitation kb24 gets as well as other celebrities that ppl stalk to make a couple bux. Pjax sold a book detailing kb24/shaq drama. just recently, jalen rose, brought up hurting kb24 to revive his lame analyst career that is doomed. To say kb24 does not have the right to keep his distance from ppl he does not trust is short-sighted. Anyone that supports smush parker the guy who beat up a valet over a couple bucks and takes his word as truth is choosing to believe bullsh*t bc they don’t like kb24. There is always 2 sides to any story and everyone here is smart enough to know that.

  • justin05

lol what a loser..never leaving the kobe comments alone

  • justin05

I agree 100% man. Too many people bashing Kobe because the Lakers are one of the favorites going into the season. Can’t even talk about football though? That is pretty fcked up..Kobe’s shits smell and he gets dressed just like we all do every morning.

  • Kap

I’m sure there’s more to the story. The kobe haters hear this and it makes their day.

  • justin05

It’s not a matter of right and wrong. That’s the problem in America today. We don’t know a whole lot about Kobe and Parker as individuals off the court. Kobe has to make decsions every single day just like the rest of us and this was a bad one..I’ll give you the down vote but as a true Laker fan, (not a Kobe fan) I can’t talk that negatively about him. I can’t stand the ballerinas but I never talk crap on Lebron or Wade anymore…even before they won.

  • justin05

He was booed in Philly because the 76ers organization chose AI instead of Kobe in the draft and now look… Kobe wanted to play in Phili, Chicago, or LA believe me.

  • Anthony Jamison

I don’t discredit Smush, but Kobe was still a kid trying to find himself and keep his legacy alive as he nearly was watching it fade with this crappy team. So he probably did have an attitude problem and it is forever a bitter topic with him.
If he did just get complacent, there wouldn’t be much of a dominant legacy to argue for Kobe.

  • Caboose

Fair enough, I don’t agree with all your points but I recognize the argument. Only thing I have to nitpick: America has a whole hell of a lot more problems than over classifying issues.

  • Caboose

Um, we’re not bashing Kobe because he’s on the Lakers, obviously.

  • Caboose

Kobe was a kid trying to find himself a decade into his career?

  • zogs19994

    LOL POOR SMUSH

  • thegoodson

worst teammate in the history of the game. Period.

  • Caboose

Just saying, Smush did average 12/4/3 on 45% shooting with better than a 2:1 assist:to ratio. That’s not great, but it’s far from the worst.

  • Phil

This isn’t new. Why do you think he was booed by his hometown. He’s a prick. Strange dude.

  • Caboose

Imagine if Norris Cole said this about LeBron.

  • Caboose

Do me a favor: point out the flaws in his argument, then we can have a discussion. Or present a counter argument, or simply question, because you haven’t added much to this thread.

  • robb

Smush started this years ago. If Kobe wants to talk sh*t about him he fully deserves it. Such a scrub. If you are a nobody stay a nobody, but it’s stupid to call out an NBA legend, specially one as arrogant as Kobe. He’ll come after you and rip you every time.

  • Drig

This is Smush’s opinion. The opinion of a guy who never saw eye to eye with Kobe and probably never will. Kinda like Shaq and Dwight. Now, most rooks on the Lakers like Ebanks, Goudelock and Morris have praised Kobe for approaching them and helping them out with pointers and stuff. Yet people brush that under the rug considering that to be an anomaly. Judging him based on hearsay ( which isn’t even unbiased ) is what is termed reaching. Ever wondered why Caron Butler always praises Kobe for helping him out when he was a Laker??? Or Shannon??? Kobe is probably willing to help guys out and talk to them as long as they’re gonna put in the work ethic that he deems is acceptable. Smush rarely had that. Walton had the work ethic. Which is why Kobe doesn’t criticize Walton either.

  • Drig

Smush barely passed as an NBA player. Don’t give me the talent crap. He was basically cut from 29 other NBA teams and then some before getting a place to play. And I don’t understand why we’re harping based on one comment from a guy who shares mutual hate with Kobe. Had it been someone like Rick Fox saying it, I’d be fine with your assessment but this ain’t. I’m curious about the “more accolades” stuff too. Once I get both sides of the story, I’m gonna comment on that.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

Right, because this is all about bashing the Lakers because of the kind of team they have. No one’s said anything about any other star player on any other team that’s favored to be playing deep into the postseason so if you had any good sense, you’d see that it has nothing to do with this year’s team. Number one, no one’s bashing him. Number two, you have yet to say anything about the issue at hand. This has to do with Kobe acting like a complete punk with a teammate who was probably looking forward to playing with him. Stick to the subject. If you can.

  • Drig

So tell me why he didn’t get a single place on 29 other teams with those stats??? I remember Miami cutting him vividly. It’s not the worst, but it’s far from passable too. And his D and attitude were abysmal. He was banned from the Miami training place for being a dick or something.

  • Drig

Um……….by last post-season, do you mean 2011 or 2012??? Because Pau deserved the criticism in 2011 for being an absolute no-show. Kobe has backtracked on blaming Pau for the flameout in 2012 on media day I think.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

Nah…he was mostly booed because of how he announced he was going into the league. Philly is a tough town. Hard work. Kobe had shades on the top of his head like he was already Hollywood. Plus, the arrogant attitude as if he was better than everyone else. The attitude that he apparently still has.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

    He was 27.

  • Drig

Actually, Kobe was booed because of his comments before the ’01 NBA Finals when he said something like ripping the hearts of Philly fans or something.

  • Drig

To put this in perspective, I’d like to see how many NBA players are still on friendly terms with Smush. Esp. guys who played with him. For all we know, the party crying wolf might actually be the wolf.

  • LakeShow

    Co-Sign

  • shockexchange

“Our talks were about getting him [Horry Jr] the ball pretty much.” Smush, tell the Shock Exchange something doesn’t already know.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

The story he told isn’t an opinion. Caron is nicknamed “Tough Juice”. Kobe, while arrogant, is a smart dude. Smart enough to know he can’t treat Caron Butler any kind of way. As for the work ethic, did you watch Lakers practices? Were you in the weight room? That’s the only way you could comment about his work ethic and have anyone believe you.

  • LakeShow

That’s the thing. We don’t try to justify Kobe’s ass-hole-ness.
    He’s an asshole.
I know it. You know it. We all know it.
I love it. You hate it.
I’m not surprised by this at all. Smush is a way better person that Kobe is. Doesn’t change anything for me.
Kobe’s still my favorite player ever. Cause I don’t like him because he’s nice…

  • LakeShow

    Would you defend Hitler?
Of course no one is going to defend this lmao…
    .
Yeah he really threw Pau under the bus big time:
“Pau’s got to be more assertive, He’s the guy they’re leaving open. When he’s catching the ball, he’s looking to pass. He’s got to be aggressive. He’s got to shoot the ball or drive the ball to the basket. He will be next game.”

    .
    Such harsh harsh words lol…
    .
I happen to enjoy Kobe’s, let us say ‘aloof’ personality. BUT, I would upright slap him if he was my friend, but he’s not, and it’s fun to watch him be him for me.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

No one gets to the league without having some kind of talent. He averaged 12 points, 4 assists and 3 rebounds one season in LA. That’s a respectable statline for a backup PG. He was cut from 29 teams? Really? So he played on every team except one? You really thought that was a smart thing to say? Did Smush say he hates Kobe? What other side is there? What’s Kobe going to say? Given his comments about Kwame’s contract, who is really going to take his side after these wild comments he’s made this week? What does Smush have to gain from this? It doesn’t look like he’s trying to get back into the league. He’s been out for 4 seasons.

  • Anthony Dixon

smush should of hit him with the chris childs.

  • LakeShow

lol, Agree 100% man. Well said.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

Uh…maybe because other teams had better options. Plenty of NBA level players are playing overseas. “He was banned from the Miami training place for being a dick or something”…sounds like extremely reliable information.

  • Anthony Dixon

    word caron would smack Kobe

  • Anthony Dixon

    hold up Jordan did that?

  • Drig

Smush was playing in Greece and wasn’t picked up by any team but LA in the NBA. Miami banned him from the facilities because he was such a malcontent.

  • Drig

Next, during his tirade, Kobe did say he was tired of coming to El Segundo every time and seeing only two guys ( Odom and Walton ) working after hours when the team wasn’t winning games and most players were in a funk.

  • LakeShow

I would say Darko Milicic is worse.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

Actually, it started with him having the shades on the top of his head. His own high school coach talked about how Hollywood he looked. Also, it’s probably going to be beneficial for you to make sure the things you say are true so that you won’t have to end everything with “or something”. He got booed before those comments. He was just booed harder after them.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

…None of that justifies Kobe’s behavior. Try again.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

Yeah, he did. Punched Kerr during practice. Called him later on that day to apologize.

  • Drig

So explain why the same talented player had 4.8 points, 1.7 assists and 2.1 rebounds at 31% shooting while playing 10 minutes less on a more talented team compared to the ’06 Lakers???? And my bad, I meant didn’t manage to stick on any team for an entire season again. And I did think he tried out the development leagues etc. where any team can sign him but no one picked him. BTW, the Kwame comments were idiotic. But he did give backhanded praise. It was still a dick move but not unheard of and DEFINITELY not worse than the kind of shit other legends pulled off.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

I almost forgot about the Chris Childs one-two combo.

  • Drig

Yeah, I did say he was a dick. But I was saying it isn’t so ridiculous compared to other dick moves done by other superstars at other times when you consider the variables surrounding Lakers. Also, if Kobe was an as*hole on a level never seen before, how can you rationalize why our present rooks say he’s a cool guy to play with. Another guy who I forgot who loved Kobe was Ariza. Hell, Kobe’s probably the kind of guy who gets pissed if others don’t atleast try to make an extra effort to improve themselves while he does even when he’s miles ahead of them. Re-read my first post.

  • Drig

Due to a physical altercation that Parker had with a parking attendant in November 2007, the Miami Heat put him on paid leave to investigate the matter. On March 10, 2008, the Miami Heat officially waived Parker. Make what you want of it but I won’t be surprised if you give him the benefit of the doubt.

Re: Other teams having better options…….So you mean to tell me no team in the L in ’06 wouldn’t require a BACKUP point guard who could put up such “gaudy” stats ? You say he had enough talent to be in the L but now say 29 OTHER teams had more talent………which would mean he wasn’t upto scratch……..And just to confirm this, you consider a guy who managed to stick only 2 seasons consistently in the NBA and lose his starting spot to a rookie Jordan Farmar who isn’t even in the L anymore, then play for a better team only to get cut mid-season ( If he was cut only because of that altercation, I’d be damn sure that he wasn’t talented enough ), get picked up again and not play any significant minutes and wasn’t picked up by any other team to be an NBA level player? Okay.

  • shutup

He did he played on Cleveland, Detroit, Phoenix, Miami and lastly the Lakers. Dumbass.

  • danpowers

just another aspect of his jordan immitation ;)

  • Drig

Oh. Okay. That is one thing I didnot know. And I don’t remember Philly going as hard at Kobe before the Finals series. Sheesh, can’t a guy forget stuff about what happened around a decade ago??? I commented based on what I remember ( which was correct. ) and not after scouring the net unless it involves stats, team rosters etc. It wasn’t outlandish. If you remember that vividly, credit to you. And I haven’t said false stuff over and over. I just didn’t manage to convey my thoughts well.

  • http://twitter.com/AdonKay Adnan Krupic

It’s funny to me how Kobe has tried to emulate MJ in almost literally every single aspect of life, not just the game of basketball, but personality wise as well.
MJ was known to be a shitty teammate known for getting into fist fights with teammates in practices, also was obviously arrogant as hell.
Kobe to me is an MJ clone straight up, and who wouldn’t want to be like MJ, but whatever happened to being your own man, having your own personality. How you gonna wake up and go to sleep at night knowing you’re constantly trying to copy everything about another man legendary or not

  • LakeShow

I hear Kobe says nothing bad to Goudelocke because he goes by Glock…
    Badasssssss

  • LakeShow

Smush missed the Got Damn plane once cause he overslept…
Never stayed late after practice either.

  • Drig

He was an undrafted player. Was signed by Cleveland as a one-year rental. Agreed for a deal with the Hawks and was waived within 4 days. He played 110 minutes for Detroit and was placed on the waivers. He played for 30 minutes for the Suns. He then signed for Miami and was then waived mid-season. He then played the rest of the season for the Clips ( was bad to say the least ) and then his free agent exception rights were renounced by the Clips. Singed with Denver but was cut to trim the roster. So tell me how was he an NBA level player?? And again, why was he not able to get a single place on 29 other NBA teams just a year removed from the Lakers if he had the talent to stay in the L?

  • bike

I have no doubt that’s what he was trying to do. Kobe is the ultimate grinder-his work ethic has no parallels. It’s also well known he highly respects teammates who are grinders and coaches who are grinders.

  • Drig

Right? I can’t believe these guys are actually trying to justify Smush was an NBA level player…….Sigh……

  • http://twitter.com/NewBrianPumper King

Got damn man You be on every Kobe post leaving the most comments

    Obsessed ass

  • Drig

Sucked on Miami. “Wade makes his teammates better”…………Ridiculous right???? Kobe was a dick and didn’t mind screwing his teammates over if he could win in ’06. And he did it over and over and over that season. But using this as an argument to prove that is ridiculous.

  • http://twitter.com/NewBrianPumper King

    You one corny ass bitch

  • Drig

    LOL………

  • Drig

They haven’t followed LAL through those dark days on a game to game basis. That much is clear from the way they’re defending Smush and questioning me about calling out Smush’s work ethic :D

  • LakeShow

    *Crickets*

  • Hatershateme

If this true, Kobe the most arrogant player in the league

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

What does that have to do with anything?

  • Drig

TBH, I was hoping he’d try to justify Smush’s game……Would’ve ticked another thing off my bucket list lol :D

  • Drig

I was assuming that you were taking this as an opportunity to poke fun at the Kobe makes his teammates better argument. I replied that it was just as funny as “Wade makes his teammates better” argument since Smush was much worse in Miami. And I summarised what I thought about Kobe that season : Kobe was a dick and didn’t mind screwing his teammates over if he could win in ’06. And he did it over and over and over that season. If not, my mistake.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

Probably because Jason Williams was on that Miami team you’re referring to. Plus D-Wade also handled some PG duties. Chris Quinn also got minutes at the PG position. Smush played 20 minutes a game, 13 minutes less than what he played in LA. Anything else?

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

lol at you with your extreme phrases “One of the worse NBA players ever”. We all know how irrational you are when it comes to your Lakers, but a little common sense would do you some good.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

Finally. One thing you can back up. Congratulations. Also, Jordan Farmar is overseas because of choice, not because he’s not talented enough to be on a team. He requested to be bought out so that he could play in Turkey.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

Smush was worse in Miami because he played much less than he did in LA. Simple.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

It had to do with the argument I had yesterday and has absolutely nothing to do with Dwyane Wade
    .

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

    Intelligent comment.

  • T-man

I remember Kobe saying Rodman was his favorite teammate at the time because the two never spoke to each other off the court.

  • LakeShow

Right, but your saying that Smush had talent…
If he had talent he would have beaten out a 30+ year old Jason Williams who posted 8.8-4.6-1.2 steals. All less than Smush’s LA numbers next to Kobe.
Chris Quinn is a career 40% shooter who has never averaged more than 3 assists from the PG spot.
Both these player were worse from a statistical stand point than Smush, yet Smush couldn’t stay in the L and had his very best years next to Kobe in LA, and had abysmal showings else where…
It doesn’t matter if Smush wanted to be in the L or not. He did not have the skills and definitely did not have the work ethic to be in the L. Period.

  • shockexchange

After being personally attacked, the Shock Exchange changes his mind. It’s a total surprise that Horry Jr tried to explain to Smush the merits of the “pass to Horry Jr” offense.

  • LakeShow

I stand by that statement 100%.
Smush Parker: One of the worse basketball players ever to suit up in the NBA.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

Ever heard of players being more talented than others? Jason Williams’ numbers were that way because, as I said, D-Wade handled some PG duties which is why he averaged 7 assists that season. You can’t really prove that Smush had no talent. He didn’t have more than a lot of others, that’s it. All you can do is what you’re doing…agreeing with your guy Kobe. No one’s surprised.

  • LakeShow

Naw, he sucked in MIA because he sucked. He could have taken over the PG spot on that team if he was capable, he just wasn’t.

  • GP23

Sup y’all… Man this comment system is, well, different… not liking it, but ah well…
First of all, I find it hard to believe that “accolades” comment. Secondly, we know Kobe has always had this attitude his whole career, it’s nothing new. Thirdly, and this is worth remembering..All of Kobe’s moves are immediately placed under suspicion and
overanalyzed due to his history of questionable behavior. Even if he
literally took a bullet for LeBron, and pushed Wade out of the way of a
speeding car, there would be speculation on his motivations. Kobe came in the league and wanted to build from Jordan’s blueprint. Not
on the court, but in his projection of himself to the public at large.
His behavior and mannerisms seemed calculated right down to his blinks.

    You’re welcome.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

No one said he was a starting PG. But you’re out of your mind if you think that because he was the worst PG on that team that it somehow means that he’s one of the “worst players ever”. You’re incapable of showing that he’s one of the worst NBA players ever. Just a wild and stupid comment to make given that you’d have to know every NBA player ever and how each of them played. Which you don’t.

  • Redd

Lakers fans, what can you do, they’ve become the West Coast Heat fans.

  • LakeShow

I can give just as much evidence in regards to Smush being one of the worse ever, as you can that he isn’t…
How bout this: Smush is in the lower 10 percentile of NBA players ever to play.

  • http://twitter.com/Jzakoni Verified Account

justin always typing in some nonsense. ignore the clown

Kobe to Smush: “You sit down when you pee!”

  • MikeC.

I’m not arguing Smush’s talent, but if a man plays in the NBA, even for 1 minute, that makes that man an NBA-level player.

  • Redd

Oh sorry, the annoying douches before the renowned douches. Thanks for correcting me.

  • http://www.facebook.com/gremah Gremah Adam

Kobe never backed down, not even from SHAQ. Come on man.

  • shutup

So all the places you mentioned don’t count as having a spot on a team? What about Doug Christie on the Knicks when Riley wouldn’t play him? what about all of the 10th men on the benches of every NBA team; do they not have a spot? Every team you mentioned not only paid him, but put him on the court at some time.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=509819249 Gaurav P.

Its Smush fucking Parker. Relax. If it wasn’t for this two “overrated” seasons with the Lakers, nobody would know who he is. Also, his time in LA was his peak, as his numbers can attest. Its not a surprise they fell off to his normal standards when he switched teams.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Maybe you should relax. You don’t even know why I said that.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

Better discussion, while we’ve been talking about LeBron’s hairline, Kobe’s has pushed back quite a bit too.

  • LakeShow

Out of curiosity who defended what Kobe said?

  • shutup

Thats my point exactly, and it wasn’t like he was one and done, he got picked up by many different teams and even started on the one of the most storied franchises in NBA history. Plus he is getting more playing time and tax free money to play overseas.

  • robb

I did. I know he’s a dick and I don’t care. Kobe’s the man and Smush is a scrub. No wonder why Kobe didn’t allow him to speak.

  • bob

i believe everything smush is saying kobes a little bitch, whos just a shitty spoiled and arrogant person

  • KBM

    1) He’s overanalyzed cuz he’s so famous and polarizing.
    2) He came into the league and built off Jordans blueprint ON the court.
    3) His behaviours and mannerisms are calculated like this “copy everything MJ does”.
    Thanks.

  • http://www.facebook.com/qcollingwood Interdico Scriptor

What’s the worst? Really, how do we find this shit out!

  • Youngindy21

The funny part of all this is that Kobe Bryant thinks he is a better teammate than Smush Parker. Kobe is just as bad of a teammate as Smush Parker because he never passes the ball and he throws his teammates under the bus. Lebron is more of a team player because while he might clown Mario Chalmers and other teammates at least he gets his teammates involved and he actually does make his teammates better.

  • brandan evans

remember people it didnt work out for him in Miami either, so it was him not Kobe. also remember in Smush’s final year with the Lakers he gotten into it with Phil and Phil benched his ass! so this guy did somethin that Kobe didnt respect!
Kobe respected Shannon Brown, Trevor Ariza, Josh Powell, Sasha Vuichic & Luke Walton. Why? cause these guys worked hard to make them selves better and came thru in the clutch in the playoffs & finals!!
Remember Smush got killed by Nash in ’06 & ’07 playoffs!! if he didnt disappear in ’06 playoffs we would beat the Suns.
Its ur fault Smush!! and kudos for Kobe pointing this out!!

  • Conor

He actually once challenged Shaq to fight him at the height of their mutual malcontent. Obviously would have lost, but Bryant isn’t hesitant if people cringe when he speaks the truth and he certainly isn’t afraid of anybody.

Look how long it took people to realize that he wasn’t the primary motivation for Shaq’s departure. Years.

  • Conor

    How kind of him…

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1602832844 Michiboo Meticulous

So Kobe came out and STATED HIS OPINION AGAINST
SMUSH. KOBE WAS PRAISED. NOW SMUSH IS STATING HIS OPINION AGAINST KOBE, AND SMUSH IS BEING KILLED. DOUBLE STANDARD. BIASNESS. SMUSH ACKNOWLEDGES KOBES, BASKET BALL LEGACY, BUT IT WAS HIS PERSONALITY AS A HUMAN BEING HE DIDNT LIKE. GO AND READ BACK THE ARTICLE. LIFE GOES ON AFTER BASKET BALL. SERIOUSLY THOUGH, DO U REALLY KNOWS WHAT KOBE STAND FOR AS A PERSON?

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1602832844 Michiboo Meticulous

I’ve read through your comments and u r one of the few who really sticked to the topic. Kobe came out and ‘butchered” his former teammate, the teammate reply. Smush did paid homage to “Kobe The Basket Baller” but NOT “Kobe The Person”. He stated what occured at Lakers. Lakers and/or Kobe fans werent there, yet they r “killing” Smush. SMH. How does Smush talent even being question now? They need to really stick to the topic.

  • http://www.facebook.com/qcollingwood Interdico Scriptor

I still laugh I read yr name as hater shat me and I realise how applicable that really is to this asinine inane SLAM forums of insults.

  • Hatershateme

Its haters hate me u dumb fuck

  • Drig

Actually, you haven’t seem to have seen that I agree Kobe was a dick. Better read before you reply. I said you were presumptuous in passing a verdict on how Kobe is off-court and how he interacts with other younger players on the basis of 1 failed case esp. when there are many guys who are willing to swear by Kobe being helpful and friendly. But fine. So how did his efficiency end up like crap when he had more help??? He was found out when he played alongside more talented teammates??? Why didn’t he find a place to play on 29 other teams only 2 years removed from LAL teams that wanted to bottom out, save cash and make a profit off of Kobe??? And Smush had talent. Just not NBA level talent. Not remotely close.

  • Drig

Smush had a bad work ethic and had attitude problems which many Lakers fans know. Those are two things which Kobe hates. ByAnyMeans cited this Kobe-Smush beef as being a reflection of Kobe as a human while completely disregarding how Kobe has a great rappot with guys who work hard, are willing to listen and again, work hard like Ariza, Butler, Goudelock, Morris, Walton etc. ByAnyMeans then believed Smush didn’t have either of them and it finally ended up being a debate over Smush being an NBA level player ( which is ridiculous IMO ). And Lakers/Kobe fans know Kobe was a dick during those years. Lakers/Kobe fans also know that Kobe has matured since his ’06 days and has made more effort to work with others and hence, this situation holds zero value about the Kobe we know RIGHT NOW and hence, making statements like saying Kobe’s a dick of the highest order and then some on the basis of THIS evidence is BS.

  • Drig

I honestly don’t consider 10th men who can’t last for atleast 3 full seasons on any team as NBA level players. Do you guys think if Adam Morrison right now would get a 2 year deal ( hypothetically ), he would be an NBA level player??? I don’t.

  • Drig

And that’s where I disagree with you. I believe you gotta be able to stick in the L for atleast 3-4 seasons barring injuries if you wanna be considered an NBA level player. He had some talent. But not NBA caliber one.

  • Drig

What you said would’ve held merit if he actually had offers from NBA teams but spurned them to play overseas OR had a hefty buyout clause like few other NBA level players outside the L.But he had no offers in the NBA and hence went overseas. That for me indicates that he was NOT an NBA level player but got a place on the Lakers teams which wanted to bottom out and save cash.

  • Drig

    My bad then.

  • Drig

I know Jordan Farmar wanted to go there and bought out his contract. Smush didn’t have the same situation did he? He didn’t have any offers 2 years removed from LA. And I meant to emphasize the rookie part but it seems like I ended up emphasizing the not in the L part more :……….

  • Drig

Actually, Smush isn’t being criticized for stating his opinion. It’s fellow commenters who are using this isolated case which happened 6 years ago to call out Kobe as a person today that are being criticized. I don’t know what Kobe stands for as a person. Do you??? If so, short of spending a lot of time with him, how exactly? Guys like Ariza, Butler etc. have said Kobe is cool to hang out with. Their opinion holds a lot of merit.

  • Drig

I know that. I meant that if any player X was named “Tough Juice” or anything similar and came from a similar background, would that make Kobe think twice about saying something???

  • The Seed

I watched almost every game that year. Smush sucked and costed the Lakers a series win against the Suns. If you watch the entire game, when Lakers were up 3-1. If Smush would have left the Lakers and went to another team and succeded then you could say you agree. Smush left the Lakers and was DODO. Kobe is hard on his teammates, like MJ was, I can care less. I am very hard on my friends when I ball, do I care no. All I want to do is win. I have threaten to beat my friends up, for crappy play or when we are losing, if they continue to play like crap. Some people are different. Pressure bust pipes and Smush is a scrub and anyone who would want him as your starting point guard do not remember his skills. Smush makes DJ. Augustin look like an All Star. I would have told Smush the same thing.

  • danpowers

    amen

  • shutup

Actually Smush played 5 seasons in the L, http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/p/parkesm01.html his career avg is 25mpg. Also he played two full seasons for LA and started all but two games; couple that with his time in Cleveland; he’s put enough time in to be considered an NBA player even by your asinine standards. Oh, btw he avg more than 20mpg with both Miami and the Clippers. Last fact- he came int he league in 02-03 and played his last game in 07-08, how many seasons is that dumbass?

  • shutup

Oh and one more thing you should look at his career earnings over his time in the NBA he has made just about 6.5 million dollars. How many non-NBA caliber players can say that?

  • shutup

Smush started 162/164 games for quite possibly the greatest coach the NBA has ever seen, I doubt his work ethic was ever in question, but maybe your Kobe man-love blinds you to the fact that Kobe is just an asshole and quite possibly the most successful worst teammate ever, to Oscar Robertson’s close second place.

  • Drig

And you haven’t seen how many games he played for the Suns and the Clippers no??? I already stated all of that earlier. Hell, he managed to play more summer league games than he did for Miami, Clippers, Detroit and Phx COMBINED. The fact still remains that he effectively played 3 years worth of games and only managed to stay in LAL because LAL simply wanted to bottom out and save cash and Cleveland wanted a 1 year rental.

  • Drig

I don’t get why we’re suddenly talking about contract valuations when I’m talking about NBA level talent.?? But just an example : Adam Morrison earned 6 odd million in ONE year while playing for LAL. NBA level player? You betcha!

  • edilberto_MVp

kobe suxs!! Lebron is NOW !!!!!…..

  • Youngindy21

You threaten to beat you friends up over a basketball game? You can’t be serious right. You realize it is JUST a game and that you are most likely not gonna win any money and NBA scouts won’t be watching right? Plus DJ Augustin could possibly be an All-Star on his new squad.

  • Drig

You think Smush’s work ethic was never in question???? And you’re telling me Phil decided to start Smush because he saw something in him and not because he HAD to start him since the team was filled with crap???? And lol @ drawing conclusions from this about me again :D . I said Kobe was a dick. I said he was just as big an asshole as others. I just said that he wasn’t much worse than what we’ve seen earlier from others, that what happened 6 years ago isn’t a fair reflection of the person he is right now since he’s matured AND that taking Smush’s word and selectively forgetting numerous other rooks who praised Kobe for helping them out ( *crickets* for about a day and a half on this issue ) for it is plain dumb. Thank you very much.

  • justin05

ByAnyMeansNecessary always posts on Kobe articles come on.These write ups aren’t even worth 100+ comments but this is what we have to read about until the season starts I guess. I respect yours and his opinions because you are intelligent people but I can actually play the game on a high level so I know what the hazing is like. You have to be a dick sometimes too but it doesn’t make you who you are.

  • justin05

Post a comment that has some substance next time. Reall ballers appreciated here.

  • justin05

So you think what Kobe did was worse? Nothing is as bad as laying your hands on someone apology or not. Just goes to show you want to hate on Kobe. And you’re still trying to compare him to Jordan lol. Only faggots do that pal..there is no comparison

  • justin05

Because all of your teams are going to get pounded on. Judging someone based off of one article is ludicrous. Kobe participates in many charity events and has done great things for the NBA and his team. You and byanymeans just need to get your panties out of a bunch when it comes to Kobe. What he did was wrong but it’s just one fucking decision lol. Tell me you have never done the wrong thing before when faced with a tough decision.

  • Caboose

Ok Justin, let’s try to get this straight:
    1. Who says they aren’t worth 100 comments? There has been good debate on here but you seem mired in the idea that we’re all just bullying Kobe.
    2. You can actually play the game at a high level so you know what hazing is like? Ok, I play ball too, I’ve been through hazing, but never something like what Kobe did. Hazing is meant to bring the team closer, not drive them apart.
    3. Kobe “had” to be a dick? Explain to me how he had to bully Smush in this situation. You’re telling me that if Smush had Tim Duncan for a teammate, Timmy would “have” to be a dick to him? That’s moronic and you know it.
    4. Being a dick doesn’t make you who you are? What does then? If your actions and behavior aren’t a good representative sample of who you are, I’d love to know what is, o wise Oracle.
    5. I’m aware BAMN posts on Kobe articles a lot. I post on Orlando articles a lot. We voice our displeasure because we have LEGITIMATE REASONS for it. This is one of the pillars of logic, having a rational explanation for your argument. Your explanation (excuse?) is that you’re a Lakers fan, which you’ve referenced several times on this thread.
Now sit down and let the grown ups talk.

  • http://twitter.com/Jzakoni Verified Account

You ain’t no real baller. Your a straight a punk

    Nice lol

  • shutup

LOL so now 3.5 doesnt fall within your designated “I believe you gotta be able to stick in the L for atleast 3-4 seasons”? your a clown. After leaving LA he signed a 1.6mil contract with Miami and they re-signed for a bigger contract the next year, what are you trying to prove?

  • shutup

The correlation is that this a professional team, mark that ; many professional teams where paying him to play basketball at the NBA level, and he was getting playing time. How many people are happy to get one NBA contract? he got several. Plus he was a starter in the NBA. I’m done with this stupid discussion.

  • shutup

OK so him being a dick to a parking attendant, now means that he’s not an NBA level player? HMMM, so maybe Kobe raping that girl means he is NBA level, Shawn Kemp having 10 children by various women, Nah not NBA level oh wait Charles Barkley for throwing a fan through a bar window definitively not NBA level talent…….you sound like an idiot.

  • justin05

I understand that I get off topic, smoking a few bowls here and there will do that to you. I will also admit that I came at byanymeans in an immature way but I’m just tired of people judging someone based off of one decision. Maybe Kobe treated his future teammates better after reflecting on the Parker incidents? That was also in the past keep in mind. How we survive is what makes us who we are but every human is an individual and far too complex to be labeled one thing. Again, my fault for the immature comments but I’m just trying to get my point across, how NBA players treat one or two teammates is irrelevant to their overall character. If you don’t like a player that much then just quit posting on the articles about them. The 100 comments has to do with the substance of this article, just drama. I’m a sports guy through and through and this petty garbage annoys me. This is what we have to read until the season starts though..

  • justin05

ain’t? Doesn’t matter to me one bit what someone of your brain capacity thinks. Too unintelligent for me bro. Look up that word vacuous I described you as the other day.

  • justin05

And Yeah let’s get this straight Caboose (I’d use your real name if I knew it). I’m no dastard so I won’t just run away from your comments. I respect you as a person and most of your opinions related to basketball but it’s time to get over Kobe and any other players we don’t like. Sure, he’s more of a prick than most of us but he’s just trying to be edgy, show young guys that the NBA isn’t for boys. He’s not the first player, nor will he be the last to do this. As far as having to be a dick sometimes, it’s all about showing toughness and breaking players confidence so you can win. The NBA is a business and Kobe knew Smush would not be his teammate for long. Guards do tend to be competetive against one another. I’m not stupid, nor am I a child but my comments can be immature when I know someone is already biased towards a player. Easier to ridicule the biased than reason with them I guess.

  • justin05

The person Kobe is right now is a dickhead who shits on people from 6 years ago, so yes he is currently a piece of shit, the same turd from 6 years ago, helluva basketball player but a white girl raping stupid shot taking adulteress piece of shit and the most successful selfish player of all-time.

  • shutup

Calm down buddy, by saying “all your teams” does that mean you think your a Laker? lmao.

  • MWP
  • The Seed

I got issues, so I am working on my competitive edge. It is better now, since I am older. You might be right.

  • danpowers

on 3.: kobe aligns his whole carreer on and off the court to michael jorden. so being a dick to less talented teammates was just part of that

  • Drig

Um, if you read my post, you’d realize I was trying to imply that if Smush had enough talent to be considered even a backup for them, then the Heat wouldn’t cut him from the team solely for that issue. Which they did. Jordan Hill right now would be a good example of what I’m trying to convey.

  • Drig

So Adam Morrison deserved to be in the L the last 2 seasons??? What you’re saying would be true if he actually played on a team for a full season that didn’t have notions to bottom out while being miserly ( Cleveland, Lakers ) OR if he could actually stick to one team for atleast one season as a backup or 10th man or 12th without being cut and actually be productive lol. Perhaps we disagree with what we consider to be deserving of being called an NBA level talent.

  • Drig

Why don’t you go and take a look at the guards we had………..and again, how much LAL was paying for the team as a whole……Jordan Farmar started the last few games of Parker’s last season in LAL. He effectively lost the starting position from that point on lol. That was a good day for me. Kobe right now is a dickhead. Again, look at ALL my posts dumbass. I’m tired of repeating myself over and over again. White girl raping? Nah. Stupid shot taking? Yes.

  • danpowers

people who think people are hating on them are just not able to take criticism and normally are suprised when they find out how less people actually care about them at all. normally not enough to “hate” ;)

  • shutup

Once you start using the term “we” to describe the Lakers I’m done. Point, blank and period your fanboy-ism shows clearly and any logical discussion about anything Laker’s related is now incapable of happening. Farmar started the last 2 games of Smush’s last season, you would know that if you read my comments filled with facts not emotional Kobe/Laker love conjecture.

  • http://twitter.com/AjpDos Allen Powell

  • Mike Jones

He is a rapist and an average team mate, sounds like kobe bryant to me

  • Omnixyience

Kobe just said this in a recent interview on how people perceived
his work as a leader of a team. (Slam is slow or they’re just trying
to find a better timing to post this quote by Kobe.

    “Leadership is responsibility.
There comes a point when one must make a decision. Are YOU willing to do what it takes to push the right buttons to elevate those around you? If the answer is YES, are you willing to push the right buttons even if it means being perceived as the villain? Here’s where the true responsibility of being a leader lies. Sometimes you must prioritize the success of the team
ahead of how your own image is perceived. The ability to elevate those around you is more than simply sharing the ball or making teammates feel a certain level of comfort. It’s pushing them to find their inner beast, even if they end up resenting you for it at the time.

I’d rather be perceived as a winner than a good teammate. I wish they both went hand in hand all the time but that’s just not reality. I have nothing in common with lazy people who blame others for their lack of success. Great things come from hard work and perseverance. No excuses.

This is my way. It might not be right for YOU but all I can do is share my thoughts. It’s on YOU to figure out which leadership style suits you best. – Black Mamba”

  • Drig

Man i remember those comments. They were waiting to see if he could recover his earlier form. Sadly, he didn’t. And at the end of the day, that didn’t make him an NBA level player sadly. I know he was talented :(

  • Drig

He lost the starting spot i.e. if he continued to play there, he would’ve had zero chance of being a starter. And so, “we” means I’m a fanboy????? So, what’s a fan exactly?? Because I really hope you’re talking without ever attending a soccer game. We refer to the team we support as we. Always. And I’ve just been using logical reasoning. I’d rather be an emotional Kobe/Laker lover rather than a dumbass who cannot connect 3 dots. Thank you very much for making this discussion end up as a flame war. Good night.

  • Drig

Good thing you probably don’t have die-hard soccer fans among your circle. Or maybe it’s just something you don’t know but in our part of the world, we DO refer to the team(s) we support as “we” or “us”. And obviously you don’t realize what losing a starting position means. It means that Smush would’ve started FROM THE BENCH like he did through the playoffs lol.

  • shutup

Good morning, dumbass, and no the term we in use to reference something that you are NOT a part of is evidence of visions of grandeur. Smush lost his starting spot after 162 games, thats two full seasons, he held the starting spot, how many games was Farmar on the bench before he got playing time? You stated your definition of an NBA caliber player and Smush fit every criteria you stated; now you try to add bullshit like the Lakers had no choice to play him and start him and the Heat had no choice to pay him 4 million dollars. simple math how many teams x5 starting spots=Smush was one of the few to say he had a spot on a NBA team, and started an NBA game, let alone hold a starting spot on the arguably the most storied franchise in the history of the NBA and played for the Arguably greatest coach the league has ever seen. Do you see what I am getting at? Your an idiot and your evaluation of basketball talent is awful oh and heres your three dots faggot ._._.

  • shutup

162 out of a possible 164 games he started over 2 years in his tenure with the Lakers. Why cant you follow simple math????

  • Drig

Want me to tell you who the backup was for the ’05 team? Laron Profit. Tell me how many years he managed to stay in the L again??? The fact of the matter is that LAL wanted to save cash during those years and BOTTOM OUT. Which is why they put together the worst and the cheapest supporting cast ( minus Lamar ) they could find. Smush starting for LAL those years didn’t mean he deserved it. It meant he was the best LAL had at that position during those years ( which is saying something…… ). And he lost his spot to the rook as soon as he got his feet under him lol. And proceeded to get cut twice and then go to China. Fine. That’s NBA caliber play for you. Happy? And my evaluation of basketball talent is awful??? I’d rather have such awful skills at evaluating rather than saying Smush deserved to play in the NBA lol. And I advise you to NOT say what you said just now when you go to soccer matches outside America to passionate fans.

    Great radio interview.

if LA wanted to save cash, they could have signed a veteran PG for the minimum. The truth remains, Smush was a decent NBA player, and above average defender. He was in the NBA because he was an NBA level player. He was the starting PG on a playoff team. Was he a “good” NBA player? No – But was he an NBA level player? Obviously. To argue otherwise is stupid.

  • LakeShow

That’s not defending him. That’s admitting he is a dick. How is that defending him? lol…

  • LakeShow

That’s an interesting way to see things…
A top 10 NBA Player getting punched cause he is unbeatable on the court is one of your “Top Moments in NBA History.”
    Cool dood. lol….

  • http://twitter.com/AjpDos Allen Powell

It’s interesting that you think he got punched because he was unbeatable. Yeah, that’s why Chris Childs slugged him, Now, you could say that about Raja Bell’s clothesline, but Doug Christie and Chris Childs punched Kobe because he was mouthing off and throwing elbows on the slick, Matter of fact, that’s why Raja clotheslined him too, but Raja’s foul was so egregious and he’s so dirty himself that he doesn’t get a pass.
Kobe got slugged because he tried to get slick with the wrong cats. That’s it.

  • http://twitter.com/AjpDos Allen Powell

And in case my sarcasm didn’t come through, Chris Childs did NOT hit Kobe because Kobe was unbeatable. Your memory is faulty.

  • diddy

are we seriously talking about smush parker? smush parker ? The fact that Kobe was able to win 45 games with smush parker, kwame brown and mihm. just shows how great he is. smush parker? really ? it must be pre – season.

Apologies, I didn’t mean to come on that strongly. I hate Smush with a passion…I had the unfortunate luck of watching him play for the Lakers for 2 years.

  • Drig’s Daddy

Shaddap Drig. You don’t know shit about basketball.

  • Lorne

What’s with this with this “we” stuff? You’re a bandwagoner. Sonic fan, don’t think we all forgot.

  • Joe Papoyan

He is fabricating all this BS. Chris Douglas Roberts just praised the crap out of Kobe in an interview for helping him out and having his back. And the dude hasn’t even made the team yet.

  • gogadantes

Couldn’t have said it better myself, Drig. People seem to forget that when someone doesn’t like someone else, they tend to talk bull**** about them and lie and/or stating opinions as fact. Look at any comment section of any site ever, lol (including this one).

I believe every Word Smush says. After watching the Spike Lee documentary ‘Kobe doin work’ and seeing how Kobe treated his teammates I lost all respect for the guy. What an asshole
