Kobe Bryant Pushing Dwight Howard to Be More of an A-Hole

Kobe Bryant’s mentorship of Dwight Howard extends to lessons of being a jerk on the court. Bryant certainly mastered it, and he wants Howard to play with more of an edge. Per ESPN and the LA Times: “Magic was like that. You saw Magic barking at guys. He was the point guard, the general, so you saw him yelling instructions a lot. And he’s extremely competitive. But he still played the game with a smile on his face.’ Just like Shaquille O’Neal, right? ‘No. They’re different,’ Bryant said. ‘Shaq was a goofball. But Shaq was a big a——. I was a little a——. It worked well. Dwight has a lot of that in him. He just needs to bring it out and make guys pay every single day.’ [...] Bryant made it clear that he appreciates Howard’s edge. In fact, it’s something he wants Howard to further develop on the court. ‘You have to have a little bit of that in you,” Bryant said. ‘Dwight, to be a three-time defensive player of the year, you have to have a little of that dog in you. It’s there, it’s just a matter of him digging deep and pulling it out. It’s just a matter of him having it become habit.’ And how does Howard make that habit? ‘Just by him observing how I practice and how I play,’ Bryant said. ‘It’s just making guys uncomfortable. It is what it is. If you want to get to the next level, you’re going to have to go out there and a guy’s guarding you in practice, you’re going to have to punish him and send him a message. Make the guy who’s guarding him think about if he wants to play in the NBA anymore.’”

So is he saying to become a better player, you have to disrespect others and throw them under the bus like Kobe’s done over the years?

    thats the first step lol

  • rainman

Steve Nash disagrees with this message.

  • KD

This Kobe and Dwight mentoring is a bunch of bullshit. Dwight has been in league for 8 years and he’s a 6 time all-star. Kobe just likes to hear himself talk and Dwight is a clown.

  • redoct31

Simon says “DOMINANT”… That’s it for Dwight, everyone else knows their role at the tip.

  • Perry the PlatyPteranodon

But then hows Dwight going to get that coveted Walt Disney sponsorship? Someone has to be the face of the Finding Nemo rides……

  • blackthought

he ain`t sayin` u gots 2 be an a-hole (like the man himself), but to have an aditute & think/react like you`re the greatest. and dwight could certainly use some more “punk” in his game. btw all the all-time greats had a little of that, some more (mj), some less (no 99).

Kobe’s been disrespected himself. He and Shaq were both at fault with their whole feud. Equal blame. Shaq also threw him under the bus and showed some of his foolishness with that “freestyle rap” he performed. I enjoyed Kobe saying “Just means I have one more than Shaq now…I don’t forget anything” after his last championship. I doubt that Dwight will all of a sudden stop smiling on the court so I don’t think Kobe will be able to change him. The pressure will be on Dwight to deliver a lot more than it was in Orlando. If Kobe leaves in 2 years without another championship, a lot of that blame will go to Dwight rightfully or wrongfully.

I once wanted to play in the NBA…
And then I took a Kobe on D *Ba Dum Tssss*

  • Bigbeats23

look at all the kobe and LA haters dwight is a goofball Kobe wants him to be the best he can be kobes gonna hang up his shoes in 2-3 years dwight has never been dominant like shaq on the offensive end kobe wants dwight to get that killer instinct Kobe wants rings it’s all about drive and competitiveness how can you hate. Haters beware LA Miami Finals La in 7. (Jodie meeks, earl clark, chris duhon, jordan hill, antwan jamison) all bench players la is deeper than most think

  • realTalk

probably why he hasn’t won a championship to this point.

  • rainman

Do we really gotta go into the reasons why Nash hasnt won a ring yet? Believe me, it has nothing to do with his on court demeanor.

  • Atlanta Zone 6

He right you have to have a mean streak if you want to be taken serious in the game

  • bike

“Bryant said. ‘It’s just making guys uncomfortable’”
And his teammates, coaches, wife, girlfriends, fans, relatives, dogs, cats,…etc.

Theres a bunch of idiots and haters in here commenting.. KD is dwight the best NO,can he learn something or 2 from kobe? ABSOLUTELY. Thats called mentoring!. Karl he didnt throw anyone under the bus. All he said was he wants dwight to STOP being so NICE on the court. Kobes 100% right in his comments

  • Junior Taylor

I just don’t see Howard ever having the kind of edge Kob’s looking for. It’s kind of hard to get serious all of a sudden after walking around with a permanent smile on your face

  • shutup

THIS JUST IN-Dwight will not stop his smiling while his team is losing, Kobe threatens to cut his man parts off….

  • roscoe

imo dh12 is not the only nba all star that needs to bcme an a-hole. Who you ask? kd.

  • roscoe

its funny “KD” a proponent of carrying the back-packs of ppl who ran his @ss off the court in the finals would make such a comment. Blinded hypocrisy, imo.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

Here you go again with that back-pack garbage. KD and LeBron are cool. They worked out together. It’s really not a big deal. Get over it.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

KD’s demeanor and attitude on the floor is fine. The only thing he really needs right now is James Harden to show up in the Finals if they get there again.

  • Yi-Cheng Chen

didnt howard said he can finally be himself in LA? hey wait…

  • roscoe

keep saying that and you might convince yourself. good sh*t.

  • roscoe

kds demeanor on the floor is not something i can read that well to be honest. he is a pretty quiet dude that has a ton of respect for others. i’m not making excuses for anyone but jharden had a left wrist/hand injury in the finals. clearly something happened to him and his go left unstoppable drives like ginobli changed in june. do u think jharden flinched?

  • roscoe

    *can’t read

  • roscoe

throwing ppl under the bus is underated & abusing egos works great in competition. try it sometime.

  • aicomeback

end of day steve nash has taken literal beatings on the court and played through em idc if steve nash is a weak defender hes no softie hes simply not as athletic as the dudes who get by him

  • pposse

If Lebron OR Kobe do not make it to the finals this year, then their legacies should be tainted…everyone and their momm’as have been asking for this showdown since 2008. It will be 2013 and if they don’t comply, their should be grave repracussions.

  • ends

Give it a second KB, it will show up any minute now

Excellent analysis, especially the part about Magic keeping his edge with a smile on his face.

So Kobe is giving lesson’s on how to be an A-Hole? You can search far and wide and not find a better teacher. He is definitely a Jedi Master of A-Holishness.
