LaMarcus Aldridge Wants Blazers Built Around Him, Not Another Star

The idea that the Portland Trailblazers should target another superstar doesn’t seem to sit particularly well with LaMarcus Aldridge. He would prefer if the team brought in more guys to fit in with him. Per CSNNW: “I think every team in this league feels that I’m a number one and that’s why they double-team me and they scheme me the way they do it,’ Aldridge said. ‘If I wasn’t a number one, teams wouldn’t double-team me and teams wouldn’t try to take me out. So I don’t think there’s no need to bring in a number one. This organization can do whatever they want to do, but I think it’s definitely good to keep putting really solid pieces around myself, Dame [Lillard], Meyers [Leonard], and J.J. [Hickson]. But I don’t think it’s no need to bring in a number one, but if they do, I’ll play my role.’ [...] Back in the day, he says he was an afterthought on the offensive end behind Brandon Roy, Greg Oden, and Andre Miller and it frustrated him to the point to where he was almost traded. Now, he’s grateful to show the world that he’s worthy of this franchise role. ‘People don’t realize that I went from the fourth option, to almost traded, to now the main guy,’ Aldridge said. ‘So I definitely don’t take my position lightly. I’m happy to be in this position and trying to just get better with everybody else.’”

yeah, who wouldve thought that from the trio of Roy, Oden and Aldridge, only Lamarcus would still be relevant after just few years

Did he mention the word :championship” in his talk? At least LBJ talked about winning.

  • doom

and if the blazers were in the east they would be in the playoffs and could talk about it. in the west its 10 deep before you even get to houston portland and phoenix

Y’all are gassing Lillard up SO MUCH. Do you honestly think he’s going to take over from LA after ONE SEASON? That’s ridiculous. Most over hyped NBA rookie of the last 5 years, for sure, at least by internet comments.

  • JackPackage

    Brandon Roy isn’t relevant?

Lillard isn’t going to be better than Lamarcus Aldridge at any point in his career.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

that is a ridiculous idea. Lillard isn’t going to be better than Aldridge at any point in the next 5 years.

All he’s saying is, teams gameplan around him. He’s enough of a threat as the number 1 option that teams change the way they play to take him out of his game, so it would benefit the team to add players that can take advantage of that. — Which makes sense….And Aldridge did already prove he can be the best player on a playoff team, a playoff team that gave the eventual NBA champion Dallas Mavericks the hardest series of anyone they played that year.

I think he meant relevant as in still a good/great player. Roy is just trying to show that he can still play in the league now.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

He was an afterthought on the offensive end behind…Greg Oden? I wish that core would have had an opportunity to play at least one full season together 100% healthy…Miller, Roy, Aldridge and Oden. He’s right about building around himself and the young pieces they have now.

I don’t know man. athletic, scoring inclined guard w/ a decent passing game and full grown 3 point range? Kid could be a BEAST someday.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Scoring inclined guard….who has not proven to be an elite scorer against NBA guards. He also has shown no aspect of becoming an ELITE PG. He’s going to be good, but never Elite. Which Lamarcus already is.

  • Caboose

Ya wanna back that up with any proof there, chief?

let the season play out my man

  • esmooth

verified account you are right lamarcus is not a 1 option…he is a decent rebounder at 8 a game as a 611 pf his offensive game is alright at 21 points he alright post passer and hes not special to a point where he can shoot threes or defend on a every day thing he avg 0.8 a game at his height ..dwade avg 1.3 at 6’4 smh….he is a great 2nd option..a perfect third option..mind you boozer was posting same numbers he was in jazz but better rebounding stats at 11rpg…..and he was a second option never could be a star……if you wanna be this 1 option for a team you gotta post better stats first of all and stop worrying about losting it……this game has evolve so much where theres no natural pg but combo guards and pfs are centers…..lillard is gonna be special…he is a flat out scorer and at 22 he has so much upside…..his iq is off the charts and decision making too

Man im as big a Lillard fan as you’ll find, but thats Aldridge’s team and will be for a while. Dame is gonna be a nice #2 and they will coexist fine, that team could really use a nice SG. Matthews has definitely plateaued. Not sure who’s available at that position though…anyway they could get BRoy back…top 10 player in his prime

  • spit hot fiyah

    didn’t say after one season

LA is to soft to be number 1. LA will and always be a Robin. Until the Blazers realize it, the team is going NO where.
