Long Pregame Handshake Routines Could Result in Technical Fouls

This just keeps getting worse and worse. After news broke that pregame handshake routines are now on a ridiculous 90-second clock, the NBA announced that taking too long to shake hands can cost your team points. Per ESPN: “Players have been advised of the initiative during the annual meetings with referees in the preseason as part of the league’s ‘points of emphasis.’ … ‘There’s a 90-second countdown, it is placed on the clock,’ NBA spokesman Tim Frank said. ‘At 30 seconds, there’s a warning horn and alert by the refs. At the end, teams need to be ready to tip off or face a delay-of-game warning.’ Two delay of game warnings would result in a technical foul. Players around the league are already reacting negatively to the new policy. ‘I personally don’t like it,’ Oklahoma City Thunder star Kevin Durant told The Oklahoman. ‘Every player in this league has routines they do with their teammates, rituals they do before the game and before they walk on the floor. The fans enjoy it. You see the fans mimicking the guys who do their stuff before the game. To cut that down really don’t make no sense.’”

Stupid. Pointless. LeBron doesn’t do the powder toss anymore but think about how many kids loved imitating it and still would if he still did it. KG banging his head onto the padding on the stanchion. D-Wade lifting himself up on the rim through the net. Stern and anyone else who was involved with this look silly here.

At least we don’t have to see Dwight’s pseudo dream shake pre-game anymore. Although I am not a fan of this at all; the NBA has got to stop trying to strip these players of their personalities. These reeks of David Stern’s anti-urban stance against players.

I see no harm in pre-game rituals. I get its a professional league and players should act professionally but its still a game. Let the players have their rituals.

i think im supposed to like this rule as the international league pass normally only shows a blackscreen before tipp off. when a game is set up for 7.30et its 1.30am over here. when u stay up with ur friends during the week to watch a game life and there is a blackscreen until like 2am then you embrace anything that lets a game start earlier

Wow! A technical foul before the game even officially begins? That’s a damn shame. The NBA is starting to transition itself into the NFL (No Fun League). All these pre-game antics aren’t just for the players, a lot of these are for the fans as well.

Next thing you know, they will ban players and coaches from slapping each other on the buttocks. No more ass-smacking.

I think they will still do their rituals, just speed them up. Basketball players have a great sense of time so it shouldn’t be too hard of a rule to follow for them. I agree that the technical foul penalty is absurd and pointless. Just have the refs hassle em’ by giving them a delay of game warning. They get paid good money as well.

Anything to control the players. I’m all for the penalties against flopping but this is ridiculous. What’s next, no cussing?

Mr. Stern must have the NBA confused with the PGA…

  • SuperAr82

    this..is..just..ridiculous..

  • Marcuz

It is simple…if they (NBA players) want to go thru the full pre-game routine…start it earlier…that way both parties get what they want…players get to go thru the full routine and the commish gets the game started on time (if in fact that is what this rule is all about)

Anti-urban stance is exactly right. I see it too.

Seriously?! A fucking tech?! This is the type of bull that makes me very tempted to throw a shoe at d stern. Hope he has quick reflexes

  • edrees

Sounds like Kevin Durant endorses this new rule – if it dont make no sense that clearly means it does make some sense. I agree KD.

Fans pay all those money to see everything, not just the game. Otherwise why pay so much money just to sit in that arena?

All 32 NBA teams should agree to both take a pre game ritual tech each game to take a stand against this nonsense.

    Yessir, Western neighbor infact. ;)

if david stern wants to save time, why not lower the amount of television time-outs? oh cause of money? that’s what I figured. This new rule will not change anything and you’re only sucking the personality out of the league.

  • danpowers

    cheers mate ;)

Something happen to the Monstars and Looney Tunes squads?

  • Max

Well yeah, The Looney Tunes threw in the towel when MJ retired and the Monstars were just to old, they’re all like 40+ so yeah, those 2 teams stopped.
