Smush Parker Says Kobe Bryant Didn’t Allow Him to Speak

by Marcel Mutoni@marcel_mutoni

After Kobe Bryant ripped him to shreds, the media somehow managed to locate Smush Parker for his thoughts on the matter. Parker fired back, and then some.

Smush — who says he’s been playing overseas for the last few years — told plenty of stories about his days as Kobe’s teammate. Let’s just say it wasn’t the greatest experience.

Parker claims that Bryant didn’t allow him to address him off the court, that Bryant wouldn’t build relationships with other Lakers, and that Smush stopped passing his famous teammate the ball at one point.

From Hard 2 Guard Radio (via Larry Brown Sports):

“I’m lost for words. It makes me blush. For my name to still come out of that man’s mouth? It makes me blush,” Parker said. “The two years in LA were a blessing to me,” he said. “People who ask me how it was playing for the Los Angeles Lakers. People ask me how it was playing with Kobe Bryant. I said in 2008 that it was an overrated experience.” Though Parker termed playing with Kobe “overrated,” he respects the five-time champion’s game. He just doesn’t like his personality. “You can’t knock the man’s legacy, you can’t knock what he’s done in basketball. His work ethic is tremendous. There’s not an ounce of hate in my blood whatsoever. The guy can play basketball — you’ve seen that throughout his career. What I don’t like about him is the man that he is. His personality. How he treats people. I don’t like that side of Kobe Bryant.”

“I had a workout with the Lakers, beat all the guards out for the starting position, earned a spot on the team. Midway through the first season, I tried to at least have a conversation with Kobe Bryant — he is my teammate, he is a co-worker of mine, I see his face every day I go in to work — and I tried to talk with him about football. He tells me I can’t talk to him. He tells me I need more accolades under my belt before I come talk to him. He was dead serious.” Smush says the talking they did was strictly on the court. “We’re teammates, we talk basketball on the court. [Our talks were] about getting him the ball pretty much.”

This back-and-forth through the press amounts to little more than petty nonsense, and is beneath both guys. But it sure is funny.

Long live the Kobe/Smush beef.

Nah…he was mostly booed because of how he announced he was going into the league. Philly is a tough town. Hard work. Kobe had shades on the top of his head like he was already Hollywood. Plus, the arrogant attitude as if he was better than everyone else. The attitude that he apparently still has.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

    He was 27.

  • Drig

Actually, Kobe was booed because of his comments before the ’01 NBA Finals when he said something like ripping the hearts of Philly fans or something.

  • Drig

To put this in perspective, I’d like to see how many NBA players are still on friendly terms with Smush. Esp. guys who played with him. For all we know, the party crying wolf might actually be the wolf.

  • shockexchange

“Our talks were about getting him [Horry Jr] the ball pretty much.” Smush, tell the Shock Exchange something doesn’t already know.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

The story he told isn’t an opinion. Caron is nicknamed “Tough Juice”. Kobe, while arrogant, is a smart dude. Smart enough to know he can’t treat Caron Butler any kind of way. As for the work ethic, did you watch Lakers practices? Were you in the weight room? That’s the only way you could comment about his work ethic and have anyone believe you.

  • LakeShow

That’s the thing. We don’t try to justify Kobe’s ass-hole-ness.
    He’s an asshole.
I know it. You know it. We all know it.
I love it. You hate it.
I’m not surprised by this at all. Smush is a way better person that Kobe is. Doesn’t change anything for me.
Kobe’s still my favorite player ever. Cause I don’t like him because he’s nice…

  • LakeShow

    Would you defend Hitler?
Of course no one is going to defend this lmao…
    .
Yeah he really threw Pau under the bus big time:
“Pau’s got to be more assertive, He’s the guy they’re leaving open. When he’s catching the ball, he’s looking to pass. He’s got to be aggressive. He’s got to shoot the ball or drive the ball to the basket. He will be next game.”

    .
    Such harsh harsh words lol…
    .
I happen to enjoy Kobe’s, let us say ‘aloof’ personality. BUT, I would upright slap him if he was my friend, but he’s not, and it’s fun to watch him be him for me.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

No one gets to the league without having some kind of talent. He averaged 12 points, 4 assists and 3 rebounds one season in LA. That’s a respectable statline for a backup PG. He was cut from 29 teams? Really? So he played on every team except one? You really thought that was a smart thing to say? Did Smush say he hates Kobe? What other side is there? What’s Kobe going to say? Given his comments about Kwame’s contract, who is really going to take his side after these wild comments he’s made this week? What does Smush have to gain from this? It doesn’t look like he’s trying to get back into the league. He’s been out for 4 seasons.

  • Anthony Dixon

smush should of hit him with the chris childs.

  • LakeShow

lol, Agree 100% man. Well said.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

Uh…maybe because other teams had better options. Plenty of NBA level players are playing overseas. “He was banned from the Miami training place for being a dick or something”…sounds like extremely reliable information.

  • Anthony Dixon

    word caron would smack Kobe

  • Anthony Dixon

    hold up Jordan did that?

  • Drig

Smush was playing in Greece and wasn’t picked up by any team but LA in the NBA. Miami banned him from the facilities because he was such a malcontent.

  • Drig

Next, during his tirade, Kobe did say he was tired of coming to El Segundo every time and seeing only two guys ( Odom and Walton ) working after hours when the team wasn’t winning games and most players were in a funk.

  • LakeShow

I would say Darko Milicic is worse.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

Actually, it started with him having the shades on the top of his head. His own high school coach talked about how Hollywood he looked. Also, it’s probably going to be beneficial for you to make sure the things you say are true so that you won’t have to end everything with “or something”. He got booed before those comments. He was just booed harder after them.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

…None of that justifies Kobe’s behavior. Try again.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

Yeah, he did. Punched Kerr during practice. Called him later on that day to apologize.

  • Drig

So explain why the same talented player had 4.8 points, 1.7 assists and 2.1 rebounds at 31% shooting while playing 10 minutes less on a more talented team compared to the ’06 Lakers???? And my bad, I meant didn’t manage to stick on any team for an entire season again. And I did think he tried out the development leagues etc. where any team can sign him but no one picked him. BTW, the Kwame comments were idiotic. But he did give backhanded praise. It was still a dick move but not unheard of and DEFINITELY not worse than the kind of shit other legends pulled off.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

I almost forgot about the Chris Childs one-two combo.

  • Drig

Yeah, I did say he was a dick. But I was saying it isn’t so ridiculous compared to other dick moves done by other superstars at other times when you consider the variables surrounding Lakers. Also, if Kobe was an as*hole on a level never seen before, how can you rationalize why our present rooks say he’s a cool guy to play with. Another guy who I forgot who loved Kobe was Ariza. Hell, Kobe’s probably the kind of guy who gets pissed if others don’t atleast try to make an extra effort to improve themselves while he does even when he’s miles ahead of them. Re-read my first post.

  • Drig

Due to a physical altercation that Parker had with a parking attendant in November 2007, the Miami Heat put him on paid leave to investigate the matter. On March 10, 2008, the Miami Heat officially waived Parker. Make what you want of it but I won’t be surprised if you give him the benefit of the doubt.

Re: Other teams having better options…….So you mean to tell me no team in the L in ’06 wouldn’t require a BACKUP point guard who could put up such “gaudy” stats ? You say he had enough talent to be in the L but now say 29 OTHER teams had more talent………which would mean he wasn’t upto scratch……..And just to confirm this, you consider a guy who managed to stick only 2 seasons consistently in the NBA and lose his starting spot to a rookie Jordan Farmar who isn’t even in the L anymore, then play for a better team only to get cut mid-season ( If he was cut only because of that altercation, I’d be damn sure that he wasn’t talented enough ), get picked up again and not play any significant minutes and wasn’t picked up by any other team to be an NBA level player? Okay.

  • shutup

He did he played on Cleveland, Detroit, Phoenix, Miami and lastly the Lakers. Dumbass.

  • Reed’

Caron Butler is called “Tough Juice”. Not Smush Parker! Read again.

  • danpowers

just another aspect of his jordan immitation ;)

  • Drig

Oh. Okay. That is one thing I didnot know. And I don’t remember Philly going as hard at Kobe before the Finals series. Sheesh, can’t a guy forget stuff about what happened around a decade ago??? I commented based on what I remember ( which was correct. ) and not after scouring the net unless it involves stats, team rosters etc. It wasn’t outlandish. If you remember that vividly, credit to you. And I haven’t said false stuff over and over. I just didn’t manage to convey my thoughts well.

  • LakeShow

Smush says things a lil different here. Wait till the end.

  • LakeShow

Can you just admit that Smush was amazing already man?!… lol, at these guys acting like Smush Parker isn’t one of the worse NBA players ever.

It’s funny to me how Kobe has tried to emulate MJ in almost literally every single aspect of life, not just the game of basketball, but personality wise as well.
MJ was known to be a shitty teammate known for getting into fist fights with teammates in practices, also was obviously arrogant as hell.
Kobe to me is an MJ clone straight up, and who wouldn’t want to be like MJ, but whatever happened to being your own man, having your own personality. How you gonna wake up and go to sleep at night knowing you’re constantly trying to copy everything about another man legendary or not

  • LakeShow

I hear Kobe says nothing bad to Goudelocke because he goes by Glock…
    Badasssssss

  • LakeShow

Smush missed the Got Damn plane once cause he overslept…
Never stayed late after practice either.

  • Drig

He was an undrafted player. Was signed by Cleveland as a one-year rental. Agreed for a deal with the Hawks and was waived within 4 days. He played 110 minutes for Detroit and was placed on the waivers. He played for 30 minutes for the Suns. He then signed for Miami and was then waived mid-season. He then played the rest of the season for the Clips ( was bad to say the least ) and then his free agent exception rights were renounced by the Clips. Singed with Denver but was cut to trim the roster. So tell me how was he an NBA level player?? And again, why was he not able to get a single place on 29 other NBA teams just a year removed from the Lakers if he had the talent to stay in the L?

  • bike

I have no doubt that’s what he was trying to do. Kobe is the ultimate grinder-his work ethic has no parallels. It’s also well known he highly respects teammates who are grinders and coaches who are grinders.

  • Drig

Right? I can’t believe these guys are actually trying to justify Smush was an NBA level player…….Sigh……

  • http://twitter.com/NewBrianPumper King

Got damn man You be on every Kobe post leaving the most comments

    Obsessed ass

  • Drig

Sucked on Miami. “Wade makes his teammates better”…………Ridiculous right???? Kobe was a dick and didn’t mind screwing his teammates over if he could win in ’06. And he did it over and over and over that season. But using this as an argument to prove that is ridiculous.

  • http://twitter.com/NewBrianPumper King

    You one corny ass bitch

  • Drig

    LOL………

  • Drig

They haven’t followed LAL through those dark days on a game to game basis. That much is clear from the way they’re defending Smush and questioning me about calling out Smush’s work ethic :D

  • LakeShow

    *Crickets*

  • Hatershateme

If this true, Kobe the most arrogant player in the league

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

What does that have to do with anything?

  • Drig

TBH, I was hoping he’d try to justify Smush’s game……Would’ve ticked another thing off my bucket list lol :D

  • Drig

I was assuming that you were taking this as an opportunity to poke fun at the Kobe makes his teammates better argument. I replied that it was just as funny as “Wade makes his teammates better” argument since Smush was much worse in Miami. And I summarised what I thought about Kobe that season : Kobe was a dick and didn’t mind screwing his teammates over if he could win in ’06. And he did it over and over and over that season. If not, my mistake.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

Probably because Jason Williams was on that Miami team you’re referring to. Plus D-Wade also handled some PG duties. Chris Quinn also got minutes at the PG position. Smush played 20 minutes a game, 13 minutes less than what he played in LA. Anything else?

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

lol at you with your extreme phrases “One of the worse NBA players ever”. We all know how irrational you are when it comes to your Lakers, but a little common sense would do you some good.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

Finally. One thing you can back up. Congratulations. Also, Jordan Farmar is overseas because of choice, not because he’s not talented enough to be on a team. He requested to be bought out so that he could play in Turkey.
