Smush Parker Says Kobe Bryant Didn’t Allow Him to Speak

by Marcel Mutoni@marcel_mutoni

After Kobe Bryant ripped him to shreds, the media somehow managed to locate Smush Parker for his thoughts on the matter. Parker fired back, and then some.

Smush — who says he’s been playing overseas for the last few years — told plenty of stories about his days as Kobe’s teammate. Let’s just say it wasn’t the greatest experience.

Parker claims that Bryant didn’t allow him to address him off the court, that Bryant wouldn’t build relationships with other Lakers, and that Smush stopped passing his famous teammate the ball at one point.

From Hard 2 Guard Radio (via Larry Brown Sports):

“I’m lost for words. It makes me blush. For my name to still come out of that man’s mouth? It makes me blush,” Parker said. “The two years in LA were a blessing to me,” he said. “People who ask me how it was playing for the Los Angeles Lakers. People ask me how it was playing with Kobe Bryant. I said in 2008 that it was an overrated experience.” Though Parker termed playing with Kobe “overrated,” he respects the five-time champion’s game. He just doesn’t like his personality. “You can’t knock the man’s legacy, you can’t knock what he’s done in basketball. His work ethic is tremendous. There’s not an ounce of hate in my blood whatsoever. The guy can play basketball — you’ve seen that throughout his career. What I don’t like about him is the man that he is. His personality. How he treats people. I don’t like that side of Kobe Bryant.”

“I had a workout with the Lakers, beat all the guards out for the starting position, earned a spot on the team. Midway through the first season, I tried to at least have a conversation with Kobe Bryant — he is my teammate, he is a co-worker of mine, I see his face every day I go in to work — and I tried to talk with him about football. He tells me I can’t talk to him. He tells me I need more accolades under my belt before I come talk to him. He was dead serious.” Smush says the talking they did was strictly on the court. “We’re teammates, we talk basketball on the court. [Our talks were] about getting him the ball pretty much.”

This back-and-forth through the press amounts to little more than petty nonsense, and is beneath both guys. But it sure is funny.

Long live the Kobe/Smush beef.

Smush was worse in Miami because he played much less than he did in LA. Simple.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

It had to do with the argument I had yesterday and has absolutely nothing to do with Dwyane Wade
    .

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

    Intelligent comment.

  • T-man

I remember Kobe saying Rodman was his favorite teammate at the time because the two never spoke to each other off the court.

  • LakeShow

Right, but your saying that Smush had talent…
If he had talent he would have beaten out a 30+ year old Jason Williams who posted 8.8-4.6-1.2 steals. All less than Smush’s LA numbers next to Kobe.
Chris Quinn is a career 40% shooter who has never averaged more than 3 assists from the PG spot.
Both these player were worse from a statistical stand point than Smush, yet Smush couldn’t stay in the L and had his very best years next to Kobe in LA, and had abysmal showings else where…
It doesn’t matter if Smush wanted to be in the L or not. He did not have the skills and definitely did not have the work ethic to be in the L. Period.

  • shockexchange

After being personally attacked, the Shock Exchange changes his mind. It’s a total surprise that Horry Jr tried to explain to Smush the merits of the “pass to Horry Jr” offense.

  • LakeShow

I stand by that statement 100%.
Smush Parker: One of the worse basketball players ever to suit up in the NBA.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

Ever heard of players being more talented than others? Jason Williams’ numbers were that way because, as I said, D-Wade handled some PG duties which is why he averaged 7 assists that season. You can’t really prove that Smush had no talent. He didn’t have more than a lot of others, that’s it. All you can do is what you’re doing…agreeing with your guy Kobe. No one’s surprised.

  • LakeShow

Naw, he sucked in MIA because he sucked. He could have taken over the PG spot on that team if he was capable, he just wasn’t.

  • GP23

Sup y’all… Man this comment system is, well, different… not liking it, but ah well…
First of all, I find it hard to believe that “accolades” comment. Secondly, we know Kobe has always had this attitude his whole career, it’s nothing new. Thirdly, and this is worth remembering..All of Kobe’s moves are immediately placed under suspicion and
overanalyzed due to his history of questionable behavior. Even if he
literally took a bullet for LeBron, and pushed Wade out of the way of a
speeding car, there would be speculation on his motivations. Kobe came in the league and wanted to build from Jordan’s blueprint. Not
on the court, but in his projection of himself to the public at large.
His behavior and mannerisms seemed calculated right down to his blinks.

    You’re welcome.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

No one said he was a starting PG. But you’re out of your mind if you think that because he was the worst PG on that team that it somehow means that he’s one of the “worst players ever”. You’re incapable of showing that he’s one of the worst NBA players ever. Just a wild and stupid comment to make given that you’d have to know every NBA player ever and how each of them played. Which you don’t.

  • Redd

Lakers fans, what can you do, they’ve become the West Coast Heat fans.

  • LakeShow

I can give just as much evidence in regards to Smush being one of the worse ever, as you can that he isn’t…
How bout this: Smush is in the lower 10 percentile of NBA players ever to play.

  • http://twitter.com/Jzakoni Verified Account

justin always typing in some nonsense. ignore the clown

  • LakeShow

    Become? lol.
Pretty sure we we’re around before Heat fans LMAO.

  • what

    ………….

  • MikeC.

Kobe to Smush: “You sit down when you pee!”

  • MikeC.

I’m not arguing Smush’s talent, but if a man plays in the NBA, even for 1 minute, that makes that man an NBA-level player.

  • Redd

Oh sorry, the annoying douches before the renowned douches. Thanks for correcting me.

  • http://www.facebook.com/gremah Gremah Adam

Kobe never backed down, not even from SHAQ. Come on man.

  • shutup

So all the places you mentioned don’t count as having a spot on a team? What about Doug Christie on the Knicks when Riley wouldn’t play him? what about all of the 10th men on the benches of every NBA team; do they not have a spot? Every team you mentioned not only paid him, but put him on the court at some time.

Its Smush fucking Parker. Relax. If it wasn’t for this two “overrated” seasons with the Lakers, nobody would know who he is. Also, his time in LA was his peak, as his numbers can attest. Its not a surprise they fell off to his normal standards when he switched teams.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Maybe you should relax. You don’t even know why I said that.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

Better discussion, while we’ve been talking about LeBron’s hairline, Kobe’s has pushed back quite a bit too.

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ Nick Tha Quick

    Is that you Vanessa Bryant?

  • Datkid

top 5 comment of all time

  • LakeShow

    7 years between them.

  • Datkid

Why are so many people defending this? Kobe is a huge dick. We all knew this already. Jordan was sort of an asshole too… just relax.

  • http://twitter.com/AjpDos Allen Powell

Excellent use of “f*ck boy”. You deserve a gold star sir.

  • LakeShow

Out of curiosity who defended what Kobe said?

  • shutup

Thats my point exactly, and it wasn’t like he was one and done, he got picked up by many different teams and even started on the one of the most storied franchises in NBA history. Plus he is getting more playing time and tax free money to play overseas.

  • robb

I did. I know he’s a dick and I don’t care. Kobe’s the man and Smush is a scrub. No wonder why Kobe didn’t allow him to speak.

  • bob

i believe everything smush is saying kobes a little bitch, whos just a shitty spoiled and arrogant person

  • KBM

    1) He’s overanalyzed cuz he’s so famous and polarizing.
    2) He came into the league and built off Jordans blueprint ON the court.
    3) His behaviours and mannerisms are calculated like this “copy everything MJ does”.
    Thanks.

  • http://twitter.com/Esquire_J Esquire J

Well it was probably the fact that Caron actually did some time in prison that stopped Kobe from saying bs

  • http://www.facebook.com/qcollingwood Interdico Scriptor

    Hahaha.. classic!

  • http://www.facebook.com/qcollingwood Interdico Scriptor

**** literally took a bullet for leBron*** is that what you said? It’s hard to take anyone seriously after a comment like that.
As if, in any reality, any NBA player is taking a bullet for any other NBA player!! GTFOH!

  • http://www.facebook.com/qcollingwood Interdico Scriptor

    That’s gold brother!

  • http://www.facebook.com/qcollingwood Interdico Scriptor

What’s the worst? Really, how do we find this shit out!

  • Youngindy21

The funny part of all this is that Kobe Bryant thinks he is a better teammate than Smush Parker. Kobe is just as bad of a teammate as Smush Parker because he never passes the ball and he throws his teammates under the bus. Lebron is more of a team player because while he might clown Mario Chalmers and other teammates at least he gets his teammates involved and he actually does make his teammates better.

  • brandan evans

remember people it didnt work out for him in Miami either, so it was him not Kobe. also remember in Smush’s final year with the Lakers he gotten into it with Phil and Phil benched his ass! so this guy did somethin that Kobe didnt respect!
Kobe respected Shannon Brown, Trevor Ariza, Josh Powell, Sasha Vuichic & Luke Walton. Why? cause these guys worked hard to make them selves better and came thru in the clutch in the playoffs & finals!!
Remember Smush got killed by Nash in ’06 & ’07 playoffs!! if he didnt disappear in ’06 playoffs we would beat the Suns.
Its ur fault Smush!! and kudos for Kobe pointing this out!!

  • Conor

He actually once challenged Shaq to fight him at the height of their mutual malcontent. Obviously would have lost, but Bryant isn’t hesitant if people cringe when he speaks the truth and he certainly isn’t afraid of anybody.

Look how long it took people to realize that he wasn’t the primary motivation for Shaq’s departure. Years.

  • Conor

    How kind of him…

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1602832844 Michiboo Meticulous

So Kobe came out and STATED HIS OPINION AGAINST
SMUSH. KOBE WAS PRAISED. NOW SMUSH IS STATING HIS OPINION AGAINST KOBE, AND SMUSH IS BEING KILLED. DOUBLE STANDARD. BIASNESS. SMUSH ACKNOWLEDGES KOBES, BASKET BALL LEGACY, BUT IT WAS HIS PERSONALITY AS A HUMAN BEING HE DIDNT LIKE. GO AND READ BACK THE ARTICLE. LIFE GOES ON AFTER BASKET BALL. SERIOUSLY THOUGH, DO U REALLY KNOWS WHAT KOBE STAND FOR AS A PERSON?

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1602832844 Michiboo Meticulous

I’ve read through your comments and u r one of the few who really sticked to the topic. Kobe came out and ‘butchered” his former teammate, the teammate reply. Smush did paid homage to “Kobe The Basket Baller” but NOT “Kobe The Person”. He stated what occured at Lakers. Lakers and/or Kobe fans werent there, yet they r “killing” Smush. SMH. How does Smush talent even being question now? They need to really stick to the topic.

  • http://www.facebook.com/qcollingwood Interdico Scriptor

I still laugh I read yr name as hater shat me and I realise how applicable that really is to this asinine inane SLAM forums of insults.

  • Hatershateme

Its haters hate me u dumb fuck

  • Drig

Actually, you haven’t seem to have seen that I agree Kobe was a dick. Better read before you reply. I said you were presumptuous in passing a verdict on how Kobe is off-court and how he interacts with other younger players on the basis of 1 failed case esp. when there are many guys who are willing to swear by Kobe being helpful and friendly. But fine. So how did his efficiency end up like crap when he had more help??? He was found out when he played alongside more talented teammates??? Why didn’t he find a place to play on 29 other teams only 2 years removed from LAL teams that wanted to bottom out, save cash and make a profit off of Kobe??? And Smush had talent. Just not NBA level talent. Not remotely close.

  • Drig

Smush had a bad work ethic and had attitude problems which many Lakers fans know. Those are two things which Kobe hates. ByAnyMeans cited this Kobe-Smush beef as being a reflection of Kobe as a human while completely disregarding how Kobe has a great rappot with guys who work hard, are willing to listen and again, work hard like Ariza, Butler, Goudelock, Morris, Walton etc. ByAnyMeans then believed Smush didn’t have either of them and it finally ended up being a debate over Smush being an NBA level player ( which is ridiculous IMO ). And Lakers/Kobe fans know Kobe was a dick during those years. Lakers/Kobe fans also know that Kobe has matured since his ’06 days and has made more effort to work with others and hence, this situation holds zero value about the Kobe we know RIGHT NOW and hence, making statements like saying Kobe’s a dick of the highest order and then some on the basis of THIS evidence is BS.

  • Drig

I honestly don’t consider 10th men who can’t last for atleast 3 full seasons on any team as NBA level players. Do you guys think if Adam Morrison right now would get a 2 year deal ( hypothetically ), he would be an NBA level player??? I don’t.
