Smush Parker Says Kobe Bryant Didn’t Allow Him to Speak

by Marcel Mutoni@marcel_mutoni

After Kobe Bryant ripped him to shreds, the media somehow managed to locate Smush Parker for his thoughts on the matter. Parker fired back, and then some.

Smush — who says he’s been playing overseas for the last few years — told plenty of stories about his days as Kobe’s teammate. Let’s just say it wasn’t the greatest experience.

Parker claims that Bryant didn’t allow him to address him off the court, that Bryant wouldn’t build relationships with other Lakers, and that Smush stopped passing his famous teammate the ball at one point.

From Hard 2 Guard Radio (via Larry Brown Sports):

“I’m lost for words. It makes me blush. For my name to still come out of that man’s mouth? It makes me blush,” Parker said. “The two years in LA were a blessing to me,” he said. “People who ask me how it was playing for the Los Angeles Lakers. People ask me how it was playing with Kobe Bryant. I said in 2008 that it was an overrated experience.” Though Parker termed playing with Kobe “overrated,” he respects the five-time champion’s game. He just doesn’t like his personality. “You can’t knock the man’s legacy, you can’t knock what he’s done in basketball. His work ethic is tremendous. There’s not an ounce of hate in my blood whatsoever. The guy can play basketball — you’ve seen that throughout his career. What I don’t like about him is the man that he is. His personality. How he treats people. I don’t like that side of Kobe Bryant.”

“I had a workout with the Lakers, beat all the guards out for the starting position, earned a spot on the team. Midway through the first season, I tried to at least have a conversation with Kobe Bryant — he is my teammate, he is a co-worker of mine, I see his face every day I go in to work — and I tried to talk with him about football. He tells me I can’t talk to him. He tells me I need more accolades under my belt before I come talk to him. He was dead serious.” Smush says the talking they did was strictly on the court. “We’re teammates, we talk basketball on the court. [Our talks were] about getting him the ball pretty much.”

This back-and-forth through the press amounts to little more than petty nonsense, and is beneath both guys. But it sure is funny.

Long live the Kobe/Smush beef.

And that’s where I disagree with you. I believe you gotta be able to stick in the L for atleast 3-4 seasons barring injuries if you wanna be considered an NBA level player. He had some talent. But not NBA caliber one.

  • Drig

What you said would’ve held merit if he actually had offers from NBA teams but spurned them to play overseas OR had a hefty buyout clause like few other NBA level players outside the L.But he had no offers in the NBA and hence went overseas. That for me indicates that he was NOT an NBA level player but got a place on the Lakers teams which wanted to bottom out and save cash.

  • Drig

    My bad then.

  • Drig

I know Jordan Farmar wanted to go there and bought out his contract. Smush didn’t have the same situation did he? He didn’t have any offers 2 years removed from LA. And I meant to emphasize the rookie part but it seems like I ended up emphasizing the not in the L part more :……….

  • Drig

Actually, Smush isn’t being criticized for stating his opinion. It’s fellow commenters who are using this isolated case which happened 6 years ago to call out Kobe as a person today that are being criticized. I don’t know what Kobe stands for as a person. Do you??? If so, short of spending a lot of time with him, how exactly? Guys like Ariza, Butler etc. have said Kobe is cool to hang out with. Their opinion holds a lot of merit.

  • Drig

I know that. I meant that if any player X was named “Tough Juice” or anything similar and came from a similar background, would that make Kobe think twice about saying something???

  • The Seed

I watched almost every game that year. Smush sucked and costed the Lakers a series win against the Suns. If you watch the entire game, when Lakers were up 3-1. If Smush would have left the Lakers and went to another team and succeded then you could say you agree. Smush left the Lakers and was DODO. Kobe is hard on his teammates, like MJ was, I can care less. I am very hard on my friends when I ball, do I care no. All I want to do is win. I have threaten to beat my friends up, for crappy play or when we are losing, if they continue to play like crap. Some people are different. Pressure bust pipes and Smush is a scrub and anyone who would want him as your starting point guard do not remember his skills. Smush makes DJ. Augustin look like an All Star. I would have told Smush the same thing.

  • danpowers

    amen

  • shutup

Actually Smush played 5 seasons in the L, http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/p/parkesm01.html his career avg is 25mpg. Also he played two full seasons for LA and started all but two games; couple that with his time in Cleveland; he’s put enough time in to be considered an NBA player even by your asinine standards. Oh, btw he avg more than 20mpg with both Miami and the Clippers. Last fact- he came int he league in 02-03 and played his last game in 07-08, how many seasons is that dumbass?

  • shutup

Oh and one more thing you should look at his career earnings over his time in the NBA he has made just about 6.5 million dollars. How many non-NBA caliber players can say that?

  • shutup

Smush started 162/164 games for quite possibly the greatest coach the NBA has ever seen, I doubt his work ethic was ever in question, but maybe your Kobe man-love blinds you to the fact that Kobe is just an asshole and quite possibly the most successful worst teammate ever, to Oscar Robertson’s close second place.

  • Drig

And you haven’t seen how many games he played for the Suns and the Clippers no??? I already stated all of that earlier. Hell, he managed to play more summer league games than he did for Miami, Clippers, Detroit and Phx COMBINED. The fact still remains that he effectively played 3 years worth of games and only managed to stay in LAL because LAL simply wanted to bottom out and save cash and Cleveland wanted a 1 year rental.

  • Drig

I don’t get why we’re suddenly talking about contract valuations when I’m talking about NBA level talent.?? But just an example : Adam Morrison earned 6 odd million in ONE year while playing for LAL. NBA level player? You betcha!

  • edilberto_MVp

kobe suxs!! Lebron is NOW !!!!!…..

  • Youngindy21

You threaten to beat you friends up over a basketball game? You can’t be serious right. You realize it is JUST a game and that you are most likely not gonna win any money and NBA scouts won’t be watching right? Plus DJ Augustin could possibly be an All-Star on his new squad.

  • Drig

You think Smush’s work ethic was never in question???? And you’re telling me Phil decided to start Smush because he saw something in him and not because he HAD to start him since the team was filled with crap???? And lol @ drawing conclusions from this about me again :D . I said Kobe was a dick. I said he was just as big an asshole as others. I just said that he wasn’t much worse than what we’ve seen earlier from others, that what happened 6 years ago isn’t a fair reflection of the person he is right now since he’s matured AND that taking Smush’s word and selectively forgetting numerous other rooks who praised Kobe for helping them out ( *crickets* for about a day and a half on this issue ) for it is plain dumb. Thank you very much.

  • justin05

ByAnyMeansNecessary always posts on Kobe articles come on.These write ups aren’t even worth 100+ comments but this is what we have to read about until the season starts I guess. I respect yours and his opinions because you are intelligent people but I can actually play the game on a high level so I know what the hazing is like. You have to be a dick sometimes too but it doesn’t make you who you are.

  • justin05

Post a comment that has some substance next time. Reall ballers appreciated here.

  • justin05

So you think what Kobe did was worse? Nothing is as bad as laying your hands on someone apology or not. Just goes to show you want to hate on Kobe. And you’re still trying to compare him to Jordan lol. Only faggots do that pal..there is no comparison

  • justin05

Because all of your teams are going to get pounded on. Judging someone based off of one article is ludicrous. Kobe participates in many charity events and has done great things for the NBA and his team. You and byanymeans just need to get your panties out of a bunch when it comes to Kobe. What he did was wrong but it’s just one fucking decision lol. Tell me you have never done the wrong thing before when faced with a tough decision.

  • Cyrus4

ya see *uk kobe !! i’d slap that ignorant muh *uker twice cross his head

  • dan

I wouldnt talk to him either – just for being called ‘Smush’

  • Datkid

  • Caboose

Ok Justin, let’s try to get this straight:
    1. Who says they aren’t worth 100 comments? There has been good debate on here but you seem mired in the idea that we’re all just bullying Kobe.
    2. You can actually play the game at a high level so you know what hazing is like? Ok, I play ball too, I’ve been through hazing, but never something like what Kobe did. Hazing is meant to bring the team closer, not drive them apart.
    3. Kobe “had” to be a dick? Explain to me how he had to bully Smush in this situation. You’re telling me that if Smush had Tim Duncan for a teammate, Timmy would “have” to be a dick to him? That’s moronic and you know it.
    4. Being a dick doesn’t make you who you are? What does then? If your actions and behavior aren’t a good representative sample of who you are, I’d love to know what is, o wise Oracle.
    5. I’m aware BAMN posts on Kobe articles a lot. I post on Orlando articles a lot. We voice our displeasure because we have LEGITIMATE REASONS for it. This is one of the pillars of logic, having a rational explanation for your argument. Your explanation (excuse?) is that you’re a Lakers fan, which you’ve referenced several times on this thread.
Now sit down and let the grown ups talk.

You ain’t no real baller. Your a straight a punk

  • Clos1881

    Nice lol

  • shutup

LOL so now 3.5 doesnt fall within your designated “I believe you gotta be able to stick in the L for atleast 3-4 seasons”? your a clown. After leaving LA he signed a 1.6mil contract with Miami and they re-signed for a bigger contract the next year, what are you trying to prove?

  • shutup

The correlation is that this a professional team, mark that ; many professional teams where paying him to play basketball at the NBA level, and he was getting playing time. How many people are happy to get one NBA contract? he got several. Plus he was a starter in the NBA. I’m done with this stupid discussion.

  • shutup

OK so him being a dick to a parking attendant, now means that he’s not an NBA level player? HMMM, so maybe Kobe raping that girl means he is NBA level, Shawn Kemp having 10 children by various women, Nah not NBA level oh wait Charles Barkley for throwing a fan through a bar window definitively not NBA level talent…….you sound like an idiot.

  • justin05

I understand that I get off topic, smoking a few bowls here and there will do that to you. I will also admit that I came at byanymeans in an immature way but I’m just tired of people judging someone based off of one decision. Maybe Kobe treated his future teammates better after reflecting on the Parker incidents? That was also in the past keep in mind. How we survive is what makes us who we are but every human is an individual and far too complex to be labeled one thing. Again, my fault for the immature comments but I’m just trying to get my point across, how NBA players treat one or two teammates is irrelevant to their overall character. If you don’t like a player that much then just quit posting on the articles about them. The 100 comments has to do with the substance of this article, just drama. I’m a sports guy through and through and this petty garbage annoys me. This is what we have to read until the season starts though..

  • justin05

ain’t? Doesn’t matter to me one bit what someone of your brain capacity thinks. Too unintelligent for me bro. Look up that word vacuous I described you as the other day.

  • justin05

And Yeah let’s get this straight Caboose (I’d use your real name if I knew it). I’m no dastard so I won’t just run away from your comments. I respect you as a person and most of your opinions related to basketball but it’s time to get over Kobe and any other players we don’t like. Sure, he’s more of a prick than most of us but he’s just trying to be edgy, show young guys that the NBA isn’t for boys. He’s not the first player, nor will he be the last to do this. As far as having to be a dick sometimes, it’s all about showing toughness and breaking players confidence so you can win. The NBA is a business and Kobe knew Smush would not be his teammate for long. Guards do tend to be competetive against one another. I’m not stupid, nor am I a child but my comments can be immature when I know someone is already biased towards a player. Easier to ridicule the biased than reason with them I guess.

  • justin05

Kobe Can* be an arrogant asshole. No person is any one thing.

  • http://twitter.com/AjpDos Allen Powell

    Your friends are punks.

  • http://twitter.com/AjpDos Allen Powell

How could you forget one of the greatest moments in NBA history.

  • http://twitter.com/AjpDos Allen Powell

Don’t forget the Doug Christie too

  • http://twitter.com/AjpDos Allen Powell

Exactly. 450 jobs. And a nice chunk of those are dedicated to cats on their guaranteed rookie deals. Cats acting like making the League even for a short time isn’t impressive.

Itelligent? You spend alot of your time on this website. Go away street rat

  • shutup

Now Phil had to start him? Because there isn’t a world full of players that could have done a better job then “the worst player ever in the NBA”. Jordan Farmar was the backup pg and he started the year after Smush left so I don’t know what your getting at with that one. The person Kobe is right now is a dickhead who shits on people from 6 years ago, so yes he is currently a piece of shit, the same turd from 6 years ago, helluva basketball player but a white girl raping stupid shot taking adulteress piece of shit and the most successful selfish player of all-time.

  • shutup

Calm down buddy, by saying “all your teams” does that mean you think your a Laker? lmao.

  • MWP
  • The Seed

I got issues, so I am working on my competitive edge. It is better now, since I am older. You might be right.

  • danpowers

on 3.: kobe aligns his whole carreer on and off the court to michael jorden. so being a dick to less talented teammates was just part of that

  • Drig

Um, if you read my post, you’d realize I was trying to imply that if Smush had enough talent to be considered even a backup for them, then the Heat wouldn’t cut him from the team solely for that issue. Which they did. Jordan Hill right now would be a good example of what I’m trying to convey.

  • Drig

So Adam Morrison deserved to be in the L the last 2 seasons??? What you’re saying would be true if he actually played on a team for a full season that didn’t have notions to bottom out while being miserly ( Cleveland, Lakers ) OR if he could actually stick to one team for atleast one season as a backup or 10th man or 12th without being cut and actually be productive lol. Perhaps we disagree with what we consider to be deserving of being called an NBA level talent.

  • Drig

Why don’t you go and take a look at the guards we had………..and again, how much LAL was paying for the team as a whole……Jordan Farmar started the last few games of Parker’s last season in LAL. He effectively lost the starting position from that point on lol. That was a good day for me. Kobe right now is a dickhead. Again, look at ALL my posts dumbass. I’m tired of repeating myself over and over again. White girl raping? Nah. Stupid shot taking? Yes.

  • danpowers

people who think people are hating on them are just not able to take criticism and normally are suprised when they find out how less people actually care about them at all. normally not enough to “hate” ;)

  • shutup

Once you start using the term “we” to describe the Lakers I’m done. Point, blank and period your fanboy-ism shows clearly and any logical discussion about anything Laker’s related is now incapable of happening. Farmar started the last 2 games of Smush’s last season, you would know that if you read my comments filled with facts not emotional Kobe/Laker love conjecture.

  • http://twitter.com/AjpDos Allen Powell

He got hurt. I mean, the talent was there, then he got hurt. The team was waiting to see if he could recover his earlier form. Hell, Kobe himself said Morrison could hoop for real. You don’t remember those comments?
