Brandon Roy to Undergo Another Knee Surgery

by Marcel Mutoni@marcel_mutoni

Brandon Roy’s comeback bid has taken a rough, potentially devastating hit.

The veteran guard will reportedly go under the knife to repair his right knee. It’s the fifth arthroscopic surgery for Roy since he entered the NBA (and seventh since high school.)

Per the Oregonian:

On Thursday in Minneapolis, Roy was still hopeful he would be able to play Friday in Portland, where he spent his first five seasons. But he said no matter what happens the rest of this season, he has no regrets. “I wouldn’t be disappointed either way,’’ Roy said. “If it ends in three weeks, it ends. It’s over. I’m totally satisfied with what I’ve done. I know the sacrifice and the effort that I put into coming back. It took a lot of discipline to get to where I am, That’s all I care about: how hard I’ve worked.’’

Roy had planned to spend Thanksgiving at his Portland home with his wife, two kids and several family members, who would make the three hour drive from his hometown of Seattle. He said he was looking forward to playing his first game at the Rose Garden since his memorable Game 4 performance in the 2010 NBA playoffs, when he scored 18 of his 24 points in the fourth quarter against Dallas. “It’s going to be special. It’s going to be weird,” Roy said on Thursday, before he knew he would have surgery. “I use to walk to that locker room in the Rose Garden… and you know, I felt like I owned the place. Now, I come back as a visitor, so it’s weird. It’s like you buy a house, sell it, and then go back to the house, but it’s somebody else’s. Now it’s LaMarcus’, the new rookie … it’s their house now. But again, that’s kind of the excitement in it. There’s new blood there and at the same time, I had my moment.”

Brandon Roy hasn’t played since November 9, when he aggravated a knee injury that originally occurred during the preseason.

In five games this season, Roy averaged 5.8 points, 4.6 assists and 2.8 rebounds while shooting just 31.4% from the field in 24 minutes per night.

This is just a sad story. B.Roy had the talent to be something special in this league.

He gave it a shot. Hopefully he can get a job as a scout with the Blazers or something like that if he wants it.

Please take this as a hint Roy.

Sigh. I went to the Nets-T-Wolves game a couple of weeks back and it was just painful watching him. No lateral movement, no explosiveness – he’s a shadow of what he was. Bravo to him for trying to make a comeback, but yeah, he really should take this as a hint.

does this mean that portland doesn’t have to pay him anymore?

B Roy will always be one of my favorite players.

    told y’all

Many players will tell you that after one surgery, they are never the same. Roy ought to be thinking about whether he will ever be able to walk a flight of stairs again, let alone ball.

  • broy

Holy cow, this guy’s knees have no luck

LOL…. definitely did… I think ppl knew it was only a matter of time but wanted to believe his knees would hold up because it was such a feel good story. B. Roy seems like a good dude so it was easy to rally behind him

    C-Leg… C-Leg… C-Leg…

right, but people were acting like he was going to be the big off-season addition. and that just obviously wasn’t going to happen.

Yea, hopefully that was Brandon Roy or his agent leaving those comments. LOL! I def didnt think he’d be anywhere near a huge contributor and big offseason addition. I did hope he would bounce back though. Guess you cant bounce with bad knees

    This sucks

He’ll end up having no more knees in 20 years.
He’s gonna be having an elevator in his house.

    Sucks but it’s over.

  • Darksaber

Sooooo, the Nba injury curse wanders around the country? Used to reside in Portland but judging from the current woes of the Timber-Crutches – i mean, Rubio, Barea, Love, Pekovic, Budinger and Roy? Insane – seems like that entity found a new home.

  • Redd

Heck even I wanted him on my Bulls, knowing he’d be injured again. But I still told myself otherwise. Hard to dislike the dude.

  • The Fury

This is sad, but in reality a blessing in disguise for Wolves because Alexey Schved is a gamer.

  • underdog

    Man, it’s just sad.

BROY! you’ll always be that star!

  • Slick Ric

    …..And you happy about it?

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

nope, i wish i was wrong. but, the expectations, and the idea that he is disappointing people, were unfounded. which, i told y’all (maybe not you, i don’t remember) to curb. i only point this out, because this isn’t surprising, this was inevitable.

  • bigA

Second best player in the world after Metta’s homeboy from Queens, but he went to jail.

  • Dagger

I honestly don’t know why most people seemed to be optimistic about his comeback. You don’t get over not having cartilage in your knee. Once it’s gone, it’s gone, and your athleticism is shot. Very sad though: he was a great, great player, with so much more room to grow.

  • bug34

i like how he cant even name ” the new rookie”, Dame Lillard…seems like a turd move to me

Maybe Portland was never cursed….maybe the curse just follows Roy wherever he goes….

Sad to hear that man. This probably is it for him.

  • candlewood jhay
