FIBA Wants to Add 3-on-3 Basketball in the 2016 Olympics

If FIBA gets its way, we could be seeing 3-on-3 basketball at the next Olympic Games. It’s one of the proposals the hoops governing body intends to present to the International Olympic Committee: “FIBA will request the IOC to make the following two changes for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil: Add four teams to the Men’s Olympic Basketball Tournament for a total of 16 teams to be played in two arenas. This is suggested in order to make the Olympic Basketball Tournament more competitive and shorter to reduce the pressure on players. Integrate 3×3 Basketball as a second discipline. With regards to 3×3, the Central Board looked back at the first full season of FIBA’s programme – with the inaugural World Tour as well as the first-ever World Championships for Men and Women, and the second U18 World Championships – and deemed it to have been a great success. It also approved the qualification system for the 2014 Youth Olympic Games to be played in Nanjing, China.”

    this would be so awesome.

  • Jay Cutler

    Dwight, LBJ, CP3 (over Westbrook)

In 3v3 it’s all about pick n roll to initiate offense. D can’t hedge too hard at risk of getting burned. If Rose was available I’d take him at pt. D Howard can wear out shooting big men and clean up.

  • LakeShow

    Please do.

  • Redd

USA is going undefeated for a million years.

  • LakeShow

    Non fact based statement.

Ever heard of “evolution of the sport”?

  • Redd

    Clearly not a literal statement..

  • mhm

3 on 3 basketball? and USA basketball players? pshhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

  • mhm

    no competiton

I guess we would have to go with Dwight, but by 2016? No way I’m taking CP3 in 2016. Honestly I have no idea who I would take in 2016. Dwight has already lost a step and can’t shoot FT’s. I’m thinking 2016 Rondo over CP3 (if he continues to improve his shot). I don’t even know about LeBron in 2016. No way the dude can continue to play at this level for four more years. He ain’t Kobe.

When you combine Uncle Drew with the state of Andrew Bogut’s old man legs it looks like Australia could set some age based records

Sorry to only pick this out of your whole paragraph….but why can’t Lebron keep up his play for four more years?

  • roscoe

if this doesn’t show that fiba is a money making joke of an organization idk what will. the nba is going to creep up and snatch the international game away from these knuckle heads.

I just wanna see a 1 on 1 or 2 on 2 event in all star weekend…better than the effin skills challenge

  • MikeC.

3 on 3, I’m assuming it would be halfcourt. I’d take KD, Melo and Aldridge. I know I’ll get ripped for not taking LeBron, but Melo’s game seems made for Fiba rules since he absolutely shreds international comp.

I mean it’s possible if he continues to improve his skills ala Michael and Kobe. I just feel as though his athleticism is a tad more important to his game than Kobe’s. Kobe also has a better work ethic and is more devoted. I mean it’s possible man, I hope he can, I just don’t think so. It’s hard to imagine that he’s in his 10th season! And he came in as the number one option in his first year. Kobe barely played his first three seasons. I think the wear and tear will get to him. I expect long playoff runs each and every year for him. Mentally draining and physically demanding. In four years he’ll be over 30. Just look at DWade. He’s on the decline after 9 seasons, Lebron will be at 13 in four years.

the only reason the rest of the world even has the slightest chance in the olympics is cause the play together more often. with 3 on 3 its guna be all bout talent. USA will win this every year with ease

  • Dumb Evan Boland

How the f do you know that Kobe has a better work ethic/more devoted than LeBron? Do you go to gym with him, watching while he lifts weights? Do you watch him launch 100000000 shots every practice? Do you watch him while he stays hours after a tough loss to practice jumpshots? OR are you an ESPN sheep?

  • bringbackthesonics

run tmc would have been perfect

  • MikeC.

I think the “Kobe works harder than LeBron” idea is based on LeBron not developing any semblance of a post game until part way through last season. Kobe always added something in the off-season and for awhile, LeBron didn’t.

This is gonna be an advantage for the world. USA can produce 12 allstars for a team, the world can not but the world can produce 3 allstars on a team.

You’re a fool if you think LeBron is even on the same level as Kobe when it comes to dedication to their craft and work ethic. You’re just completely misguided, ignorant and utterly void of knowledge. Go talk to Shaq. Mike Brown. Just read Shaq’s book. Kobe is the hardest worker in the game. Period. Bar none. Common knowledge son. Something you clearly lack.

I was thinking the same thing Redd was that we were going to dominate but what you said was true. Our best 3 against other countries best 3 could be good competition to see.

  • AiRsMiTh

I was thinking KD, LBJ, and Dwight.

  • Dumb Evan Boland

I think you’re just a Kobe fanboy-ESPN sheep-Skip Bayless disciple. It’s okay, Evan. I like both players but I won’t ramble about stuff that I don’t see in person i.e. Kobe’s work ethic.

  • Shake an Blake

Sorry but not sorry, I still take a team composed of Lebron James, Kevin Durant, and (insert 3rd best player here) over any of Europe’s top 3. I still say World has the advantage in 12 player roster play over 3 on 3 where the main factor is not the wealth of superstar talent but the team-role playing element.

Which is completely irrelevant cus MURICA

  • Shake an Blake

lol, I’d say your more likely to get ripped for taking a guy who doesn’t even crack the top 5 at his position (Aldridge)

  • patrick

how about 1 on 1 instead? ive thot for a few years now,,after the dunk competitions have been duds imo, that the nba shud replace it with a 1 on 1 contest..imagine seeing melo vs lebron..that’d be awesome imo

    very stupid

  • MikeC.

I want to correct Aldridge and change to Z-Bo. I forgot what a load he is. No Dwight for me. If there’s a true big, he needs to be able to step out to 18 feet. Trays why I chose Aldridge, but Z-Bo is a better fit. Healthy Amare would work too.

  • palo

do some of you seriously think NBA stars are going to participate in this unproven format? some of them had real problem participating in world championship…

  • http://www.facebook.com/evan.boland Evan Boland

Well, if you don’t know anything that you don’t see in person it could explain your complete lack of knowledge. Skip Bayless is an idiot. I have actually met Kobe on several occasions, all though no I have never seen his work ethic, again, it’s common knowledge. If you’re able to read a book, read Shaq’s. He played with both of them. Or, actually, just go look up the 2008 Olympics. And LeBron himself is in shock at Kobe’s work ethic. Clearly, you’re just not very knowledgeable when it comes to the players, which is fine, just don’t go spewin nonsense then boy.

  • Redd

    Wouldn’t mind that.

  • pposse

d rose works harder than him

lets think of it another way – you are an average player or at least you and your team mates know that you are not superstars. Would you rather face 5 superstars (The dream team), or three? I think the half-court 3 v 3 style would also possibly favour less athletic players due to the inability of athletic teams to take advantage of fast breaks.. Post game would be important and many non-amaerican players do have solid post games. That combined with good shooters could lead to some even competition could it not? Hit me…

    good prediction
