Mike Brown Fired By the Los Angeles Lakers (UPDATE)

by Marcel Mutoni@marcel_mutoni

UPDATE: Um … wow! According to USA Today, Mike Brown is no longer gainfully employed. The Lakers fired their head coach, a day after saying his job was safe: “Mike Brown has been fired by the Los Angeles Lakers, according to his agent Warren Legarie. The Lakers are off to a 1-4 start and will play Golden State tonight at the Staples Center.”

+++++++++++++++

Publicly, the Los Angeles Lakers — everyone from management to players with influence — are saying all of the right, re-assuring things about Mike Brown.

However, it is becoming increasingly clear that the team’s disappointing 1-4 start to the season has the sharks circling around the embattled head coach.

Unemployed coaches are rumored to be interested in Brown’s job, and there’s now talk that management is losing patience with him.

Per ESPN:

Los Angeles Lakers coach Mike Brown’s job would be in immediate jeopardy if the team’s six-game homestand is unsuccessful, according to sources close to the situation.

Sources said that the Lakers, while having publicly expressed support for Brown in the wake of a 1-4 start, have privately grown sufficiently concerned about the state of the team to the point that management is prepared to look seriously at a coaching change at this early juncture if L.A. can’t take advantage of what look to be multiple winnable games in the upcoming stretch.

Believe it or not, there is good news on the horizon for Mike Brown. In theory, anyway: the Lakers have a long, and easy homestand starting tonight, and their record should look a lot more respectable in the coming days.

It’s going to be a fascinating season for the Lakers and Mike Brown. Whether he survives it, remains very much up in the air.

(Mike Brown voice) “Et tu Horry Jr … Et tu?”

Get rid of this bum before the homestand. Get Sloan in there ASAP. Its bad enough that Obama is our president. We turn to the Lakers as an outlet from the depression our Commander an Chief invokes, must we suffer more with Mike Brown, send his stupid as to the white house and give laker nation a new director.

  • Jensen Carp

whats the over under on mike brown responding to this news with his mouth agape.

  • ThaWindy

Somebody get Phil on the phone

they better not hire Jerry Sloan……if they want their players to be happy.
    .
Hire D’Antoni, and get the most out of your guys. — Defense will take care of itself anyway, you have a top 10 defense the day Dwight gets back in game shape.

Bring in mr Sloan!!!! hows the lakers schedule looking next few games?! laker fans better hope for some L’s

  • Unforgettable

They just said his job was “safe” the other day lol.

the only problem is that the Lakers are not a fast team. Nash can’t sprint the floor like he used to, same for Kobe, Metta isn’t exactly a track star, and Pau is a definite back to the basket, pound it out player. If D’Antoni could keep the offensive tempo relentless without relying exclusively on fast breaks, they’d be set.

Mike Brown has just been fired…

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

don’t need a fast team. That’s a myth. — They Thrived with F*cking Shaq in the lineup in Phoenix bruh

  • justin05

You gotta love Slam lol. They even replaced the last article with this one. The Lakers are still going to give him a shot but it’s not looking to good.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

    he just got fired actually.

  • spit hot fiyah

“Pau is a definite back to the basket, pount it out player” ????? pau as in pau gasol?

  • TV63

C’mom. They’re freakin old players falling apart! It ain’t Mike Brown. Getting a new coach won’t change their age and state of deterioration.

  • justin05

I would never hope to lose a game. Hopefully Dwight and Jamison are tired of losing so they can taker over a little bit. It’s not Kobe’s team anymore and he needs to be the one to say it or else this team is finishing as a 7 seed in the West at best. Howard and Jamison are still a little nervous I’m sure. Nash is too. They just need to find their place in the system.

  • justin05

Jordan Jr. Too much c*ck being exchanged in your face when basketball games are playing so you don’t get a good look.

  • Unforgettable

“Um … wow!” Pretty much sums it up lol

well sounds like brown just got the boot

  • http://twitter.com/Jzakoni Verified Account

that open door was definitely slammed in browns face. see ya!

  • justin05

lol I see that now. I clicked on the Slam home page and all of a sudden there’s another update. Good riddance..

  • initbruv

Sloan would hate to live in LA and coach the Lakers. Not his style. I think Indiana should hire him. They’re close to his home and have a group of tough players that he could school, not a bunch of all-stars with big egos.

WOwww.. A day after saying his job was safe.. LOL!

  • shockexchange

Over / Under that D12′s playing in Brooklyn next year?

  • justin05

Now we wait for the Sloan or D’Antoni hired update. At least I don’t have to see Borown’s mug on here for the 3rd day straight haha. On a serious note, Brian Shaw is shaking his head this morning after hearing this. SHFH.

  • http://twitter.com/niQknacks niQ

I joked about them hiring D’Antoni after the Lakers’ first loss. But you really gotta consider it now! lol

  • initbruv

Politics and sports do not mix. WE turn to this site to not have to hear yet another political comment.

  • justin05

I see that. Idk how much a new coach will improve our chances of winning but Eddie Jordan is definately not the solution.

Not surprised at all. Kobe gave him the Mamba death ritual glare and that was it.

  • LakeShow

Who’s not playing up to par for the Lakers? Who is deteriorating? Dwight looks good. Kobe looks great. Pau looks fine. Artest looks better than ever. Nash twisted his ankle… Not following dude.

  • LakeShow

That GIF is probably what the Busses looked at right before firing him.

  • pposse

its better LA does this now rather than later or at the end of the year, i don’t want to hear any excuses from this team if they lose it all this year. Kobe, Dwight, Nash, Pau..you guys are all in now!

  • BlackPhantom

    …I am so happy.

  • pposse

Kobe looked awesome when gordan hayward cuffed the ball from him and went coast to coast..he had like 75 ft of open court to just think about a story he can one day tell his grand kids and then he dunks it haha

  • http://www.reverbnation.com/savagemuzicgroup T-Ray

I didn’t see it until this morning and fell out laughing. It was the coldest glare I’ve ever seen in my entire life. Even better than LeBron in Game 6.

I’ve always been a D’Antoni fan. I’m down for him or Sloan. I feel like Sloan fits in with Lakers talents more seamlessly, but D’Antoni would bring the fun lol.

Nash is pretty much capable of playing the same way he did in PHX. Run when possible (not SSOL, but still) and if not, run a pick and roll heavy offence. Seems simple to me. (btw, Sloan would also be perfect for a pick n rol lheavy offence just like D;aintoni nbk, but he has better defensive abilities as a coach than D’aintoni, so why not?)

I love the picture of Brown clapping. LMAO.
On that note. Brown is a real good dude. I wish there was a way to demote him to defensive coordinator and bring Sloan or D’Antoni in, but that can’t happen. Best of luck to him. Very smart dude, just not meant to be a NBA head coach.

Jim Buss deserves the blame. He hired Mike Brown when Kobe wanted Brian Shaw but he decided to completely get rid of everything that had to do with Phil Jackson after he retired. Mike Brown never should have been coaching this team. We all saw how horrid that Cavs offense was with LeBron pounding the ball until he could shoot or find an open teammate especially in the playoffs. No one should have expected anything different in LA. Hopefully, he will get an assistant job and learn how to coach on offense. Good man put in a bad situation. He was in over his head from the start.

Yes I agree, Gordon Hayward is better than Kobe Bryant. I agree full heartily bro.

  • Rainman

no they didnt… The only year they made the playoffs with Shaq was when he got traded mid season and they were already established as a playoff team at that point. They got beat 4-1 in the first round. The next year they missed the playoffs , despite the coaching change from porter to Gentry so they can run more (after which they started playing better but it was too little too late, they were too far behind in a very competitive western Conference. they finished with 45+ wins and still didnt make the playoffs, yes, with Shaq.) Where exactly did they thrive?
