Phil Jackson Reportedly Stunned By Lakers Hiring Mike D’Antoni

The Los Angeles Lakers’ decision to go with Mike D’Antoni rocked the basketball world, and Phil Jackson was just as surprised as anyone by the move. Per ESPN: “A league source indicated late Sunday night that Jackson was ‘stunned’ when the Lakers called to inform him they had chosen D’Antoni. He had been prepared to accept the job Monday if negotiations between his agent and the Lakers went well. Jackson’s agent Todd Musberger had been scheduled to fly in to Los Angeles on Monday Jackson and the Lakers had never spoken about a salary, the source said, ‘but he knew coaches don’t make what he used to make anymore.’ Jackson, the source said, never intended to miss any more road games than he had in his previous stints with the Lakers. ‘Phil would come back only to win and skipping games doesn’t lead to winning,’ the source said. D’Antoni, who had knee surgery at the beginning of November, hasn’t yet been cleared to travel, according to sources and ‘it’ll be a couple of days before he comes in, but he’s further along than people believe.’ There is a possibility that Bickerstaff will remain interim head coach even after D’Antoni’s introductory press conference, according to a source, if D’Antoni isn’t feeling physically able to coach games yet because of his recent knee surgery.”

well Lakers effed up. if Clippers ever fire Del Negro, he should go there, maybe get position like Pat has in MIA, and truly make Clips the best team in LA..

  • Zabbah

He was so stunned he almost broke his hip while reacting to the news.

  • Jo Momma

They were better off with the interim coach instead of D’Antoni.

  • omphalos

This was seriously the stupidest decision the franchise has made since the initial hiring of Mike Brown. How do you open talks with Phil Jackson and then hire D’Antoni before getting a firm resolution?

  • truthteller

Phil shouldn’t be stunned. he didn’t have the best relationship with Jim Buss. He had a great one with Jerry Buss but not Jim Buss! This is no surprise!

  • Dymez

It’s going to be funny seeing these old cats operate the “7 Seconds or Less” offense.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

probably because D’Antoni has the best offense for the roster and that’s what the Lakers are focused on.

  • Lovelife

OK Phil, you really want to coach that bad? How about taking over the Pistions or the WIzards?? Show us whatchyou got stud

He takes them to the finals….welll damn

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Mike-Gilbert/100001749589586 Mike Gilbert

Aw man I was hoping D’Antoni would eventually go to the Clippers

  • omphalos

If by “the best offense for the roster” you mean “the best offense for Steve Nash” then sure, but Nash is on the way out, Phil would have gotten a lot more out of Dwight, and I can’t believe I’m actually having to justify why Jackson is a much better coach than D’Antoni. Offense isn’t everything, how many times do people need to hear “defense wins championships” before it sinks in? smdh

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Here you go buddy, obviously you don’t need a defensive system, or good defensive players to have a strong defense with Dwight Howard on the roster — http://t.co/MiciRSwx — And i hate to break it too you, the Suns teams he coached, were middle of the pack defensively, and he had them right on the cusp of a championship, so obviously with this, much much much better defensive roster, it’s safe to assume they will be ok on that end.

    .
Offensively speaking —- Phil would have got more out of Howard? Do you know anything about the triangle offense at all? Phil would not have increased any focus on Dwight Howard, or ANY player on that roster for that matter. — D’Antoni comes in as the best coach in the league for Nash, who so happens to be the best PG in the league for his teammates. Howard gets to do what Shaq did, mixed with the Pick and Roll things Amar’e Stoudemire got to do. Kobe will get a ton of shots, in rhythm, he finally gets to play on an uptempo team, with a Coach he LOVES. Pau gets freedom to do more Pau Gasolish things (Boris Diaw 2.0). — And now you don’t have to worry about the Lakers paper thin bench!!! cuz D’Antoni isn’t going to use it.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

“i am so mad! we should have got Phil. Dwight learning the triangle without a training camp wouldn’t have been a problem at all” – People

  • omphalos

The Lakers operate with different expectations to the Suns or even the Knicks – they are used to winning, and winning now. Being middle-of-the-pack defensively isn’t going to cut it against the teams LA will be facing in the playoffs, teams are stacked at the top and unless you can dig in and defend, you won’t be successful in the modern NBA.

Dwight isn’t going to hurt Durant’s production any, or make Martin miss any more long-balls, or keep up with Russ in transition. He might slow down Ibaka inside, but the Thunder are hardly banking on that.

You don’t think arguably the greatest motivator in NBA history would have been able to increase the focus of Dwight, Pau and Kobe – especially when he comes in as a fresh voice after listening to Mike Brown for a year? Last I checked, Kobe taking a tonne of shots isn’t always a good thing – especially at this point in his career. D’Antoni couldn’t figure out how to work Amare and Chandler into a cohesive offensive unit, what makes you think he’ll be any different with Pau and Howard?

I’m not going to argue this with you into the night because we are both locked into our positions and need to see what happens before this is going to be resolved. But I’ll say now that the Lakers won’t win a championship with D’Antoni at the helm unless a major injury hurts one of the other contenders.

regarding the defense: READ my comment. CLICK the link. No reason to believe the Lakers won’t be an elite defense with Dwight Howard. None.
    .
The Thunder aren’t going to beat the Lakers with jump shots. — And Phil Jackson would not have done anything special to the defense, the same problems defensively they will have with D’Antoni, they would have had with Jackson.
    .
Why do the Lakers need motivation? They are professional basketball player’s who got together for one purpose and one purpose only, motivation is not the thing they lack, this isn’t a bored Michael Jordan or a bored Shaq, wake up — Don’t you think it makes more sense to get the most production possible out of your players, specifically your PG, who so happens to be the only person in the organization that can turn Kobe’s “taking a ton of shots” into a good thing (seeing as how Phil Jackson has NEVER been able to slow Kobe’s propensity to shoot shots) – considering Mike D’Antoni is the best coach in the league for Steve Nash, and Steve Nash is the best PG in the league for his teammates, it makes PERFECT sense to use him to the best of his abilities. —- Think about this, When Steve Nash and Mike D’Antoni were together from 2004-08, the Suns led the NBA in PPG, FG%, and Ast-TO ratio and tell me how Phil Jackson’s triangle would have somehow made that better……
    .
and let’s also remember, Steve Nash and Mike D’Antoni, eliminated Kobe Bryant and Phil Jackson from the playoffs in 2006 & 2007.
    .

The worst decision the Lakers have made since hiring Brown was firing him only after 5 games. In my opinion, those two wrongs have canceled eachother out because double negatives don’t exist. We’re back on track w/ a fresh coach who is definately the best fit for us. This Lakers squad needs a leader, not the “Zen master”. I’ve been a Laker fan for a long time and Phil is one of the most overrated coaches to ever step foot on an NBA court.
Bringing back Phil for 10 million a year and giving him his special priviledges could have been the worst move the Lakers have made these past few years. That’s like trying to resign Kobe to a maximum deal and giving him special traveling/coaching priveledges after the remaining 2 years left on his contract. It doesn’t matter if he helped us win 6-7 rings by then..you have to start fresh sometimes and Phil’s time is up in LA..we don’t want him back, even if people like yourself keep posting unintelligent comments on how this was a horrible decision. Please..

Well, when you have the opportunity, take it Zen Master! Gotta see how well aging stars and SSOL works. LOL

  • justin05

I think all the Phil lovers are fake Laker fans. They think the triangle offense is something only Phil knows and can execute well. The Zen Master lol..yet his magic came from Jordan, Pippen, Shaq, and Kobe.

  • Conor

D’Antoni for offence, McMillan for defence. This may work out much better than Jackson, who would not have coached LA full-time.

As long as D’Antoni doesn’t eliminate the bench, LA will thrive.

  • Tai Masters

Nbk, the 7 seconds or less offense that Mike runs is a gimmick. let’s pretend that Nash at almost 39 can run it, do you think Kobe can? or would want to? in his 17th season with all the miles on his knees,he’s going to want to be a half court player. Lastly under this offense they’re gonna have to trade Pau. Dwight. will need room down under for this offense, and Pau will need to stay way out,but his nature is to stay down under with Dwight. I’ve already heard some trade rumors, some realistic ones, and some other wordly ones.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

I mean that argument is this easy to tear apart – Kobe is more athletic than Raja Bell bruh. And Bell did ok.

    .

    Oh, and this, http://www.82games.com/0708/07PHO16D.HTM

    .
And Pau Gasol trade rumors are ALL unrealistic. He isn’t getting traded anytime soon.

  • iceman

@nbk Dantoni’s Defensive rankings with the knicks was never above 22nd in the league for 3 years until they brought in Mike Woodson near the end of his reign. Your honestly trying to argue that overall Dantoni is a better fit for this team than an 11 time champion who’s won five rings with your franchise. Your arguing that Phil Couldn’t figure out how to

make this team work better than Dantoni?

    .

Gasol had his best years under the triangle it helped to keep Ron Ron in check and Kobe’s familiar with it as well, and according to K. Rambis Dwight’s position just Like Oneal’s is the easiest to learn, So all this nonsense with Phil at the helm not getting these guys some of whom already know the triangle to acclimate to it by playoff time is ridiculous and other than a couple similarities it’s different than w/e the heck they were doing with the Princeton/Hybrid offense under Mike Brown

    .

    .

Jimmy Boy doesn’t like Phil and Phil doesn’t respect his basketball acumen other than Mitch and Dr. Buss which is why he wanted control enough to not have to deal with Jimmy’s bs come decision making,At the end of the day Jimmy did not want Phil to win another championship with Phil getting more credit than him and is the reason Shaw wasn’t chosen over Brown to begin with, and the main reason why he was not chosen now, and not given until the end of business day today to decide if he wanted it or not, saying Dantoni’s a better fit is a pr spin plain and simple. I still say they win alot of games and have a shot at a title no question but to say Pringles has a better chance to do so over the Kernal is asinine.

  • Sérgio

Man, the Lakers organization is showing no ethic whatsoever. I know it’s a business, but did they really have to dump Fisher last year the way they did? And know, tease Phil Jackson to leave his retirement only to choose D’ Antoni over him? Remember, this is the coach with more titles in NBA history, and 5 of them came with LA.

As a Laker fan, this makes me sick.

I’m not sure Kobe will work in the D’Antoni offense. Mike doesn’t like compromise, just ask Melo. Kobe won’t budge either, ask Shaq.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

LOL, Steve Nash is the PG right? Steve Nash will have the ball right? — The Suns teams had the best record in the league on multiple occassions with SHAWN MARION leading them in attempts right?
