Royce White Willing To Walk Away From NBA

Rockets rookie Royce White has been honest about his struggle with an anxiety disorder. But due to White’s continued, unexcused absences from the team, the organization appears to be losing its will to deal with White. Frustrated with a lack of minutes, White now says he’s considering walking away from the League entirely, stating that his health comes before “the art of the business.” From ESPN.com: “Speaking in an interview with ESPN’s Colleen Dominguez, White said he was going to meet with general manager Daryl Morey on Monday to discuss his situation with the team. ‘I’d rather tell them on the front end and be honest and transparent and never play again for that than allow me to become one of the stories because I wasn’t able to communicate,’ White said. White has remained absent from the team in a dispute over how the Rockets are helping him confront his anxiety disorder. ‘We all look at the stories that happen later and go, ‘Man, you just wish this guy was able to communicate his problems,” White said. ‘Or you wish somebody would just’ve talked to him and wished that the communication would’ve been there. Well now the communication’s there and there’s still a problem, right? That means the problem isn’t us. The problem is the art of the business, right? At no point will I compromise my health in the interest of business.’ Asked if he was sure he would give up his NBA career in the interest of openness and honesty, White replied, ‘If that’s what it means.’”

White and his Marlon Brando steez, “I’m so deep, complicated, and misunderstood” has gotten old.

was hoping to see him play, his game was nice at iowa state

Is White seeing a therapist or taking medication? Anxiety disorders are debilitating, but it sounds like he might not be trying to work on his anxiety. Then he blames the team for trying to make him compromise his health…Regardless, tough situation for both sides!

Wow.. What a diva. Rockets made a huge mistake. and I wanted this guy to work out for them.

  • rainman10

he’s not a diva or tool or ungrateful. He suffers from a medical condition.

“Last Thing: This is not about FLYING, travel plan is solid. This is about setting PROTOCOL and a willingness 2 become educated. #AllProgress”

this is from his twitter. He seems like such a tool.

Man, to be whining about playing time 4 or 5 games into your rookie season?! From the outside looking in, it seems like the rockets have been quite accommodating and the general public seemed to be relatively empathetic. Now White’s just coming across as entitled and high maintenance.

If the basketball world was willing to cast stones at A.I. (while he was almost single-handedly carrying an entire franchise on his back) for missing practice, best believe White (a very solid roll player at best) will be out of the L before he chooses to walk away on his own terms.

He suffers from a medical condition, which is why he’s being accommodated with transportation and counselling. I think the general public opinion is that he deserves to be put in a position where he can succeed. The thing is, when you don’t show up to your counselling sessions and are MIA from your practices, yet still feel entitled to more playing time, then you’re asking for too much.

  • Vince

Damn man, there are so many other people that would love to be in the position you are in now, you were drafted, signed a contract, donned the jersey and played (preseason) in the NBA. You’ve made it farther than a lot of people have even dreamed of getting to, and you’re going to throw it all away because you feel entitled for playing time? Playing time is EARNED not given, having anxiety problems is not an excuse for instant playing time!

The Rockets have been nothing but accommodating, they’ve arranged counselling sessions with a guy from a well respected University, they’ve agreed to let you travel by bus and aren’t forcing you to take the plane. In return you don’t even show up to practice, or the counselling sessions. Get a grip. Terrence Jones got picked what, two picks after you, and only played his first game like five games into the season because he’s shown up to practice and EARNED his minutes.

Stop it with the whole “I’m misunderstood” act. Be grateful you’ve made it this far with a team willing to help, instead, you’re whining and threatening to quit. You’re a joke.

So many questions with this. Why leave Iowa State to go to the NBA when you know they fly everywhere? I mean everywhere! Can’t go to Europe, unless he takes a boat, which would probably be as bad for him as flying. Talking about Houston is not accommodating him. What does he want them to do…email him to the games? “Uh hey, Houston, we have a problem. I appreciate you drafting my 20 years old butt and offering me more money per year that 99% of the people who live in the US will ever make in a year, but I am not going to be able to play in half of the games. Why, um, Royce da 6’9″? Well, I’m scared to fly. What the &%)&? How did you get here from Iowa then? Uh, I flew. Hmmm, ok, well…you can do that again and again and see that in 2012 planes don’t just necessarily fall out of the sky, or you can head to that greyhound terminal across the city and ride your stank butt back to Iowa, and tell your friends how you never played in the league simply because you were afraid to fly to the games. Dude gonna be explaining that one for the rest of his life.

On another note, there is nothing quite like blackballing YOURSELF. D to the U-M-B.

took the words straight out of my mouth. well said

  • Datkid

I was actually really supportive of him until I read this headline. Royce you jackass. I know this is hard, but stop talking and figure out a way to make this work. Don’t turn down all this money and the ability to play a game that you love. Don’t let your disorder limit you.
