Kevin Durant Says People Want Him and LeBron James to Hate Each Other

Fierce rivals on the basketball floor, off-the-court friends (and workout buddies.) That’s the relationship that Kevin Durant and LeBron James have. According to KD, people on the outside looking in wish the two hated each other, which isn’t likely to happen. From the Oklahoman: “I know there is someone, somewhere, trying to take my spot,’ James said in [Sports Illustrated]. ‘And I know where he is, too. He’s in Oklahoma. He’s my inspiration because I see the direction he’s headed, and it’s the same direction I’m headed. I know his mind-set, and he knows mine. It’s a collision course. We’re driving one another.’ Durant shared his reaction after practice Thursday: ‘Well, I really appreciate that comment because people want us to hate each other so bad. That’s true. People want us to hate each other. I really respect him and I really compete against him hard — him and Kobe (Bryant). I play against those guys, they’re the guys who I’m looking at, who I want to get to, and I compete against those guys really, really hard, but we’re friends. We’re friends, everybody knows that. Once you get on that court and you’re playing against one of your friends, you play to win no matter what. Sometimes he might get the best of you, I might get the best of him one time. But I really respect him (James) and that’s cool that he thinks of me that way and I’ve just got to keep working hard to continue to get better.’”

    We don’t care.

Some fool will come here and think KD is soft for these comments and soft for being friends with LeBron.

These are the same ppl who want everyone to talk smack and play dirty with hard fouls and cheap shots and pointless scruffles. While true basketball purists don’t need extracurricular activity to make the game entertaining.

Some of us care about possibly the best rivalry in NBA history

Oh stop it you silly goose!

  • LakeShow

    Comin’ for that #1 spot!

    Very Bird/Magic like these two…

  • Kevin Garnett

    Hey Malcolm X, YOU’RE SOFT

    I want a legendary rivalry.
The league is a bunch of weak-minded wimps
    Except me

I think them being friends makes it an even better rivalry. They want bragging rights.

nothing wrong with respecting your opponent, but yeah you have to want to rip your opponents heart out and crush it if you want respect from the masses.

“best friends forever” & “working out in the gym in the summer” just doesn’t work.

of course all of this is imo.

This has to be the only potential all-time great rivalry to have true friends. Magic/Bird were buddy buddy, on some my mom loves you sh*t. It’s interesting though, a different dynamic.

Good job the quote has (Bryant), otherwise I would have assumed it was the other Kobe!

Magic versus Isiah Thomas. Cut throat on the floor but friends off the floor

Forgot about those guys. Perfect example.

it would be so much fun if they did….but I’m cool with them being friends

I hope it becomes that….it’s not crazy to think they will meet 3,4 even 5 times in the finals in the next 5 years

I think this whole “they need to hate each other” garbage started with Skip Baseless. It’s retarded. You can see when these cats play each other, they go all out. They make each other better in the off-seasons, it’s not hurting either of them. They had “Hell Week” last year, and what happened? Met each other in the NBA Finals. They worked out together again this past summer as well….. Stay tuned.

….Says the dude who names himself after another grown man who’s still alive and playing. Weird. Magic and Larry’s friendship really prevented them from competing against each other in the era where rivalries were at their best, didn’t it? The Lakers-Celtics matchups in the 80s were lame. Magic and Larry would have played so much better against each other if they weren’t friends. Everyone knows how soft those two were, right?

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

    Exactly.

  • chyea

Umm…Magic and Bird really disliked each other until after they stopped contending for championships.

  • Slick Ric

SMH…these dudes soft nowadays, I’m sorry.

  • chyea…not!

ummm. nope. they hated each other for their first 2 years in the league. Then they had that Converse commercial at Bird’s house where they bonded. So stop acting like that dude.

  • havoc33

ummm, that was in 1985, get your facts straight. Bird and Magic despised each other for years. And it’s not like they became immediate friends after this shoot (which took place at Bird’s home in Indiana). Their friendship grew out of mutual respect from all their battles more than anything else.

  • havoc33

Although their friendship was never really the same after Magic took that hard foul on Isiah in the Finals. Magic even admitted this. And proven by Isiah’s action and words towards Magic when Magic the HIV virus in 91. Needless to say, they are no best friends anymore.
