Russell Westbrook May Take Part in the Slam Dunk Contest

Established NBA stars generally shy away from the increasingly unpopular Slam Dunk Contest. However, Russell Westbrook says that he would like to take part in one before he loses the explosiveness in his legs. He’s just not sure it will be this season. Per the Oklahoman: “Russell Westbrook on Thursday expressed his interest in someday joining the field but said he wasn’t sure if he will participate in Houston this year. ‘It’s up in the air,’ Westbrook said about this year’s dunk competition. ‘I would (like to) before it’s too late. But I don’t know where I’m going to feel like doing it or not.’ Westbrook, as he has in the past, insisted that he is more of a ‘game dunker’ rather than a dunk contest dunker. Typically, that means a player impresses more with power and by posterizing opposing players as opposed to planning out dunks weeks, if not months, in advance. ‘It’s so many people in this league that jump so much higher than I do, everybody else can do it,’ said Westbrook, clearly being modest. ‘It’s a lot of people that can jump. I only can jump high in the games. That’s it. I think if it’s just regular people would be disappointed.’ Westbrook, however, said he does have a few tricks up his sleeve. ‘I got a few dunks, but it ain’t nothing that you ain’t seen before,’ he said. ‘These dunk contests you’ve got to dunk on three baskets, do cartwheels and do something to get points. But I don’t know, man.’”

The dunk contest should be scrapped. It’s well and truly ran its course. It’s not about the dunks anymore, it’s about props and sponsors.

  • Max

    Please please please.
I’d also like for it to have 8 contestants like they used to.

no more dunk contest. disappointed since ’07.

its def turned into a sh|t show

  • http://twitter.com/Jzakoni Sanchez

i kinda wanna see this… but get rid of the glow n the dark nonsense

  • spit hot fiyah

word up, they really need to expand the field. the reason it sucks year in and year out is that 2 of the four paticipants mail it in. and put a major cash prize as bait for the dunkers to bring their best

  • dwade flops so hard

hasn’t been good since iggy got robbed on that up-and-under-oop-off-the-back-of-backboard

They should get Terrence Ross in this one, although he’s also a ‘game dunker’ as well. Dude flies out there!

Gerald Green, Paul George, James White, Russell Westbrook, DeMar DeRozan, Blake Griffin. No props. LeBron would have been good between 2003-2008 when he was at his most explosive. Too late now. Without the Dunk Contest, might as well scrap everything but the All-Star Game. Who really cares about the Skills competition or the Shooting Stars competition? I could do without the 3 point Contest myself.

  • underdog

Yeah, like the League and the whole All-Star Weekend is not about “props and sponsors”. It’s a business, like it or not. And it’s bigger than ever.

  • Ten Speed Everywhere Guy

I Think they should incorporate the skills challenge, shooting stars and dunk contest into one event. 4 or 8 competitors who try and proove that they are the most complete basketball player. Being able to shoot, dribble, pass and dunk. This would be a great competition for explosive shooting guards and small forwards.

Bring back the wheel, then we have back the good old days!

I don’t even think they should use nba players, they should get the 6 best dunkers in the world and the winner gets one million dollars

  • pposse

the dunk contest would be nice if only legit all star caliber players participated. I see that as the only way to rejuvenate the contest; everyone wants to see superstar rivalries and the dunk contest is on of the only mediums where it can be done.

  • Comment_System

The wheel is what started the wackness…

DeAndre Jordan, that Ross kid from Toronto, James Whit from the NYK and Gerald Green from Indiana. Bring back some judges and let them have an impact. The concept last year simply didn’t apeal to the general nba crowd. They took away some of the dunk contest vibe that an event like that realy nead.

Josh McRoberts for the dunk contest !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Make it happen SLAM.

  • Datkid

Lebron’s still plenty of explosive, but i hear you

  • justin05

Co-sign. They took the center position off the all-star ballot so why not make these changes too lol. I would love to see 2 v. 2 or 3 v. 3 games too.

  • T-man

    I like, I like!

  • robb

May? sounds Lebronish. Just do it Russ!

  • robb

Exactly. No props, just get those guys and it will be awesome.

    great idea

  • davidR

they should take the most vicious in game dunkers vs the best shot blockers, and have the dunk on contest

  • http://www.facebook.com/BadBluue Czakó Balázs

bring an AND1 slam dunk team vs the NBA slam dunk team. this can bring back the mood of the old school dunk contests !!!

  • danpowers

that would be great. and please no latters, cars, light shows, candles, ludicrous skits, stickers or capes.

  • RipCity

    that would be sick

  • Teddy-the-Bear

That’d be the ideal dunk contest line-up for me too.
BUT, as much as people hate props now–and I do as well–I really think the first time props became popular, when Dwight won it the first time… that was a great dunk contest. Gerald Green blowing the candle out on the rim, and Dwight’s punch off the backboard dunk were classic. So yeah, the subsequent prop contests were pathetic but the first one was creative and original.

  • bringbackthesonics

if only john wall was healthy, him and westbrook would be a good matchup

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

Those were great ideas. Blake, JaVale and Serge Ibaka had good ideas. Last season’s props were stupid to me though. I was done with them after I watched all of that nonsense.

  • LLC#12

I agree about incorporating some events into a new competition, but not dunking. Being able to dunk well does not really make you more of a complete player, it’s not even really a useful skill compared to the others there. But a competition incorporating shooting, dribbling and passing would be very cool.

  • Tim

Uhhh they already have that… it’s called the Skills Challenge

  • BadBluue

no cars, no sofas, only sick dunks !!

  • http://twitter.com/_DFrance DFrance

A “Give Me Lane” contest. Love it! lol

  • http://twitter.com/_DFrance DFrance

I don’t even think its the props. What new dunk can really be done at this point that you haven’t already seen? The ONLY dunk I wanna see someone pull off that I’ve only seen in that old NBALive game is the between both legs dunk. And I don’t think its possible.

  • LLC#12

Yeah but I mean if they scrapped the other stuff and just had one event.

  • danpowers

when they tried this sprite stuff one or two years ago it was a little boring coz the amateurs choked too often in front of a big audience. i think it takes real pros like nba players to perform (at least somehow) reliably on the big stage

  • Nathan

Why does this article even exist? If that’s the case, every major star that come out and say they “may” do the Dunk Contest should have an article speculating what they may or may not do.

All I know is, Gerald Green and Gerald Henderson better be in the contest this year. I could do without the marquee names in the contest.

  • Jimmy

just dont have fans vote and itll be fine

  • Max

    NBA allstar weekend.

  • Dingo

What do people think of a power dunk contest. Where the score is combined on grace, looks and the power of the dunk. Need something that measures it on the rim…
