Josh Smith Feels He Deserves A Max Contract

Josh Smith says he should get a max contract when he hits free agency this summer. As for whether Atlanta’s new front office will foot the bill, that’s another story. From the AJC: “This is all that matters right now about Smith, specifically regarding his tenuous future with the Hawks: His contract is expiring and his asking price for a new one is going to be high. It’s going to hit the ceiling. It’s why his days in Atlanta may be numbered. ‘I feel like I’m a max player,’ Smith said Friday. And yes, that is the first time he has said that. ‘I feel I bring a lot to the table. I have a lot of versatility. For what I do and what I give this ball club, I feel like I’m worth it.’ The Hawks have given one max contract in their history. It turned Joe Johnson into a very rich man (six years, $123.6 million) and the Hawks into a punch line. So which way do you think the wind might be blowing on this? Granted, in the new collective bargaining agreement, Smith’s max deal would be nearly as high as Johnson’s: about $94 million over five years. But it still could give the organization reason to balk. Smith again: ‘There shouldn’t be any hesitation. I’m Josh Smith, I’m not anybody else. I‘m not Michael Jordan, I’m not LeBron James, I’m not Brook Lopez. I’m Josh Smith. You can’t look at what might’ve happened with another person. Let’s say Joe. You can’t say, ‘I’m skeptical of giving another person that’ because of whatever they feel like happened.’”

He’s not a max player. Not only will the Hawks not give it to him but no other team will.

  • theDankerNuggets

of course he does… that doesn’t mean he actually does deserve one though

Any team that gives Josh Smith a Max contract is making a poor decision, he is on a pretty large decline. Atlanta needs to be building a strong core and I don’t believe NBA players should get max contracts unless they are a player to build around. Josh Smith wasn’t even an all-star this year.

i now know that he is josh smith

  • spit hot fiyah

he is not the athlete he once was and it shows in his game. it doesn’t seem like he has made up for lost athleticism by developing his skill set, or maybe he did but it hasn’t payed off much

I’m still confused as to how Luke Walton got a 6 year deal

Josh smith is not a max contract player…but im pretty sure there is a team out there dumb enough to throw money at em, they did it for roy hibbert n eric gordon

Big difference between a 4 year 58 mil max for a 23 year old and a 5 year 94 mil max for a 27 year old.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

Not ruling anything out. Joe Johnson did get a max contract. Let’s see what happens.

  • zues

What team has the money this summer to make that big of a mistake? Josh Smith is pushing 30. His athleticism was his biggest asset and it’s already began to fade.

  • jedi420

No way he is a max player..once his athleticism goes he will be done, his fundamentals and b-ball IQ are horrible..

  • Dacre

He deserves good money and an allstar nod. Probably the most consistently under-valued player every year…

  • Youngindy21

Eric Gordon is a really skilled player. You can’t compare Smith to Gordon. Gordon can be “THE GUY” on a championship team. I don’t see that with Smith.

  • ya_mama

Oh yeah Josh? You feel you deserve it? Well I feel I deserve a bj a day from a big booty domincan chic with a rack the size of two basketballs. We don’t always get what we think we deserve.

  • Nope

    the raptors!

  • Vince

    The Pistons!

yes, but Joe got that contract with another person at the controls, that was dumb enough to give him such a huge contract. Its not the same Atlanta Hawk management as it was then.

The Sonics would LOVE to have a marquee guy to bring in when they move to Seattle. Think if they decline to extend a qualifying offer to James Johnson and don’t pick up Francisco’s contract. That leaves them approximately $25 mil in cap space. Granted, some of that will go to resigning Tyreke, but they could extend a $15ish mil a year deal to Josh. That would give the new team a roster of approximately: Isaiah, Thornton, Tyreke, Josh, Cousins, with Brooks, Robinson, Thompson, and a high lottery rookie off the bench. Seattle would thank them.

  • KBM

‘The Guy’. Thats a bold statement

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

Not saying it will be with Atlanta. There are other GMs who would give him a max contract even though most think he doesn’t deserve it. All it takes is 1 GM to think he does deserve it.

I think this is the list of max contracts (over 25 years old)

    Kobe
    Amare
    Joe Johnson
    Gasol
    Dwight
    Melo
    Dirk
    ———————————

    Brandon Roy
    Elton Brand
    Gilbert Arenas

Not sure about Josh Smith is as valuable as any of them when they singed the contracts. You can argue about Elton Brand and Joe Johnson but it was a different time back then.
