Kobe Bryant Asked Dwight Howard if He Didn’t Like Playing With Him

The Los Angeles Lakers’ season from hell keeps getting worse and more entertaining by the minute, it seems. Games are being lost, trade chatter is swirling, and management is pointing fingers. After a report came out that Dwight Howard had mocked Kobe Bryant‘s bad shooting games behind his back to teammates, Bryant reportedly confronted Dwight this morning and asked him what his problem was. Howard’s response isn’t known to the outside world, though he did apologize for his behavior when talking to the press today. Per the LA Times: “They held a clear-the-air team meeting before Wednesday morning’s shoot-around, with Kobe Bryant very directly asking Dwight Howard if he disliked playing with the long-time Lakers star. ‘Guys went at each other a little bit,’ said a person who witnessed the meeting. Coach Mike D’Antoni started it by saying he was tired of reading newspaper stories about players questioning his offense or wanting more touches. Bryant and Howard each fell under that category after the Lakers’ lifeless 95-83 loss Monday in Chicago: Bryant said the offense needed to slow down while Howard expressed displeasure after taking only five shots. D’Antoni then told the team to stop worrying about offense and start playing better defense. The Lakers are fifth in scoring (102.6 points a game) but 26th in defense (101.4 points a game). He then asked players to speak up. Steve Nash went first. [...] Bryant also spoke up, acknowledging he could be ‘hard to play with’ and asking Howard if that bothered him. Howard’s answer was unclear, though he did not engage Bryant in nearly as vocal a manner as Bryant engaged him. ‘He didn’t go back at Kobe,’ said the person who witnessed the meeting. It was not known how long the actual meeting lasted, but the Lakers’ shoot-around went an hour longer than expected.”

this is becoming a soap .lol…were the popcorn..wonder can this really implode anyworse..u have your to bigs complain about shots or lack of( which dictates their energy they spend on defense and rebounding) And then u have your hallfamer- wanting more shots created for him (even though he shoots 30 a game). No bench and then a coach who looks like a potatoe snack having no idea how to run a team. On type that even if they do miss the playoffs they dont even own 2nd round pick let alone their would be lottery.smh…

This is worse than the 2003-2004 season with Malone, Kobe, etc. At least when Kobe and Shaq were at odds with each other then, the Lakers were a soap opera that won games. At this point they’re just bickering with no results to show for it.

However, I’m glad they had a clear-the-air meeting. Would be interesting to hear what Dwight’s actual response was to Kobe’s question.

Since when does Mike D’Antoni care about playing good defense?

  • yeee

i might be wrong, but if i was player, i wouldn’t want the media to know what goes on during meetings like these. Maybe acknowledge you had one and give a diplomatic response to what happened. But how do we constantly get the nitty gritty details of these things. This is inter-team discussions, we can barely find out exactly what garnett said to melo a couple weeks back during a game that thousands witnessed, but we can get into a private players meeting in LA? Im just saying, if you had to point out the most vocal person in the room towards the media, KB got his name all over it. Well dwight too, to be fair.

Dang, at least link the orig LA TImes story

Dwight has to man up at some point. Kobe has said himself that he’s probably not the best teammate but what you can’t say about him is that he’s fearful of confrontation. This is a perfect opportunity for Dwight to show what he’s made of. Outside of Jim Buss, he and D’Antoni are at the center of this thing. Gasol and Bryant have nothing to prove. They’ve won together. Gasol’s legacy is set. The guy who helped Kobe win 2 championships after Shaq left. Kobe’s is set. No need to go into all he’s done. He’s not trying to be the best SG or the best player in the league anymore. He just wants at least one more championship. He doesn’t see any competition for his spot right now in the league. He’s going after legends. Pau could be traded tomorrow, go back to being a 20-10 guy and everything would be cool. Nash has 2 MVPs. One of the best PGs to ever pick up a basketball. Hall of Famer. D’Antoni hasn’t been to the Finals. Dwight was there but lost…to Kobe and Pau. Those two need to change.

Dwight’s supposed to be the best big man in basketball. If he wants more shots, he has to prove something to Kobe. Obviously Kobe doesn’t think he needs any more shots. Defend the basket, rebound, control his emotions, maybe hit a few free throws. Leave at the end of the season if that’s what he wants to do. Most of all though, he has to stop wanting everyone to like him.

Makes me wonder if anyone predicted that Kobe would shoot too much and Dwight would complain of not getting enough shots; while Kobe would complain of Dwight’s indifference while losing games (smiling all the damn time) although the latter hasn’t happened publicly yet per say, give it time, it’s bound to happen

  • http://twitter.com/ClearHeatVision Raj

Yeah seriously, its so difficult to read all that as one cluster-you-know-what.

Kobe:Hey Dwight, I just want to know, not that it really matters though, do you like playing with me?

    Dwight: *smiles then laughs.

Kobe: Come on man just want to know…….how you feel * puts hand on Dwight’s shoulder.

Dwight: *smile turns to awkward chuckle ummm oh

Pau: *flees to the locker room in a jealous rage.

i know this is corny but this is how I pictured the meeting in my mind

  • Clems

    Yes sir- Dwight

“keeps getting worse and more entertaining by the minute”

No SLAM no. Its only getting more entertaining, we all knew the Lakers’ season was going to crash when they fired Brown 8 games into the season.

Your knowledge of what players want, what they feel, and what they are thinking is absolutely breathtaking. I only wish that my knowledge of these things had the depth that yours has.

  • pposse

ahahaha how much more entertaining can this get??!

I guess you have never heard of the “feed your bigs or they won’t rebound and defend the paint” mantra.

I don’t know if this was sarcastic or serious, but either way I like it.
1 up vote for you good sir!

    LOWERCASE LETTERS…..please…..

  • The Philosopher

I beg of him for more of this knowledge and wisdom that, before him, was unknown to humanity.
He is the Edgar Cayce of SLAM.

  • robb

if you look for the definition of “fake nice guy” that’s Dwight Howard. This guy pretends to be likeable and fun, smiling all the time and makin jokes and then he’ll go and talk sh*t behind your back. Remember when he went to Otis S. and told him he wanted SVG out and then went and put his arm around him during a press conference like everything was ok? That’s what he does. He’s a coward always starting stuff behind people’s backs and blaming everybody else. I can’t stand that guy.

  • robb

beautiful. Slam censoring comments. Way to go.

  • LakeShow

I guess you don’t know the “we’re feeding the big’s, but they keep vomiting the ball up” mantra…

  • D_B

5 games. Also, “we all know” everything in hindsight.

  • LakeShow

This is what we love about you… Who else drops an Ed Cayce parallel on a basketball website.

  • D_B

“D’Antoni then told the team to stop worrying about offense and start playing better defense.” Is this a reliable source? That can’t be right.

  • D_B

Dude your imagination needs serious work.

  • The Philosopher

Aw man… you’re making me blush. Lol.

  • LakeShow

If ZOGS is getting 25 up votes, you’ve got to make some changes SLAM.

  • Vince

No. Well at least I didn’t. The minute they fired him is the minute their season died.

Seriously. Firing your head coach five games in? That just screams poor management.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Junior-Taylor/100003121138419 Junior Taylor

    Y’all 2 need to get a room.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

Simply pay attention to patterns. Not hard at all.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

I’ve heard it a lot. Even in high school. Kobe apparently doesn’t care for it though. If he wasn’t all that excited about feeding Shaq the ball, you know he’s not happy about having to make sure Dwight gets the ball. That mantra doesn’t work with Kobe.

  • The Philosopher

You must show me, sir. For, I am merely a grasshopper.

  • Redd

    Lowercase letters please.

You woulda thought these pro athletes with this much talent would have worked it out by now. Heat started 7-8 their first year of the big 3, and then got good. Lakers still losing after half the season gone. Time’s a slippin away folks…. I’m still a Laker fan, but seriously need some positive things to happen to cheer me up! Like D12 actually trying harder on defense (except now his shoulder is hurt… again). Kobe taking less bad shots (kinda hard to teach an old dog new tricks, but if D’Antoni can talk about defense, why can’t Kobe take less bad shots and more good ones).

u cant blame kobe on this one. he straight up asked him what the deal is.
kobe is tryin to win man, he not wit this bS.
u either want to win or u wanna go thru the motions and just do whatever and kobe is not wit that.
dwight need to come on wit it or else his rep will not get any better since what happened to him last year.
and how does this crap get out to the media? i thought they solved this problem since the kobe & shaq days. dont tell the media anything man!

I prefer; “I am but an egg.”

If only that were the case…..

  • Yi-Cheng Chen

maybe, kobe just want to know the truth so he can decide whether he needs to trade howard or not.

  • speedy

Yeah kobe wants to win we all know that, but he still jacks up a ridiculous amount of shots without realising, that trying to shoulder all the scoring load will not help with this team of egos. He needs to share and D’Antoni has to work out the system for that.

  • Draak Grafula

While the players and fans are all discussing (cough b*tch*ng about cough cough) who’s getting enough shots and touches, the offence is running FINE right now. Leave it be for now. Their problem is their egos. ALL OF THEM (stars, players & coaches) should just focus 100% on defence all of the time. Don’t think about offence until you’ve got a decent system running at the other side of the ball. When you have that under control and start winning some games you get some leeway, see what’s fair on offence and start stroking your ego a little bit.

Nobody deserves to ask for more shots (or complain about someone else’s shots) until you start winning some games, and that starts with defence.

  • speedy

The drama with Dwight would have ended last offseason, wouldn’t he have extended his contract for one year. He would have gone to brooklyn or been traded there and everything would be fine. Now he just took the drama with him , never really commited to LA and killed the whole team chemistry, because he never really knows what he wants, and if so doesn’t heve the guts to speak it out.

  • Bored

    it is the case…

  • Dagger

This is the kind of dysfunction that’s tearing apart the Lakers right now.

  • str8 from samoa

kobe doesnt like dwight. and dwight dosent like kobe. simple as that haha

  • amazinggrace84

The coach does not have control of the team. If the ball needs to go into the post more, then that’s where it must go. Steve Nash should be running the pick-N-roll with Howard. Post Gasol. Kobe “Wack Mamba” will still get his shine.

I didn’t know you could check such a thing. I am a loser then lol.

  • shutup

The Laker’s have been abusing their bigs for quite some time now, go back a couple years and you’ll see Bynum and Pau not getting their just due, because a certain SG wants to avg more shots per game then them, combined.

Too busy slayin moms but thanks for the suggestion, now be a good sport, and go dive head first into a nut sack

  • http://www.facebook.com/jay.brodes Jay Brodes

first off the blame should be with Dantoni and jimmy buss! that said, kb might shoot too much but who else is doing anything? kb has to guard the point and score. whenever dhoward touches the ball he turns it over gets is stripped. he shoots 46% from the line..i would be ticked too. if you want the ball more..man up and play!

have you been watching their games this season?

  • shutup

    Yes. Next question please.

  • Bored

are you paying attention to what happens in those games?

  • shutup

Yes. Next question please…Kobe gets the ball swung to him and he jacks up contested shot (x12-15 per game)….moving on….

  • Bored

haha yes he does. BUT Kobe is feeding him the ball. Dwight has 121 turnovers this season. care to elaborate on that?

  • shutup

You think I am going to defend Dwight….fat chance. Todays game was evident of what the Laker’s need from Kobe. 14,14 and 9. In a big margin win. No truer truth was ever presented as evidence.
