Kobe Bryant Says the Los Angeles Lakers are Old and Lack Energy

by Marcel Mutoni @ marcel_mutoni

Kobe Bryant has managed to hold off Father Time and is thriving despite his advanced age. Thanks to a new diet, and the same old maniacal drive to train and improve, Bryant is playing some of the best, most efficient basketball of his 17-year career.

The same cannot be said for the rest of the Los Angeles Lakers.

More often than not, they look old, slow and lethargic. According to an enraged Kobe after last night’s loss to the visiting Philadelphia Sixers (which pushed the Lakers below .500 again), this is due to the fact that his team is indeed old, slow and lethargic.

Per the OC Register:

“It’s because we’re old as (expletive),” Kobe Bryant said. “We just have to figure out how to play when we don’t have that energy. We have to change things up a little bit defensively, we have to figure out what we want to do offensively. We have to figure out what we want to do on nights when we don’t have those legs, or when we don’t have the energy.”

Bryant suggested all his teammates need to take care of their bodies and get proper rest so they will be ready to play. “(Tonight) we were sluggish, stuck in the mud,” Bryant said. “When we have games like that, everything is an uphill battle for us. When we play fresh, we play energized, we are a completely different team.” He added: “We’re just an old damn team. We’re just slow. We were just stuck in the mud.”

Metta World Peace isn’t buying the excuse that his squad is old and slow:

“That’s no excuse, the Knicks are playing great, so that’s no excuse,” World Peace said. “You can’t use it as an excuse for us. Thank you. Thanks for trying.”

The Lakers’ lone young star, 27-year old Dwight Howard (who continues to struggle with a balky back), could only muster 7 points — though he was solid on defense, with 14 rebounds and 5 blocked shots — and looked visibly frustrated following the loss.

Head coach Mike D’Antoni suggested that the Lakers weren’t looking past the Sixers in anticipation of the upcoming matchup against the LA Clippers on Friday night. They simply stunk up the joint.

D’Antoni 8players rotation sure is not helping, he’s overplaying Dwight on a bad back when Hill is providing solid minutes when he’s on the floor. Nothing new here but D’Antoni is just horrible when it comes to managing minutes, im curious to see how it will work out for the Lakers come playoff time.

  • spit hot fiyah

we knew this when they signed nash and jamison and kobe, pau and mwp got a year older. add to that a coach that wants to play up tempo and a shoer rotation = disaster

  • roscoe

    trade winds blow-eth.

  • The Philosopher

The Lakers will be fine, in my opinion.
But, I believe that the Lakers should sit Dwight Howard for a while. I mean, if he’s hurt, and everything.
Guys will just have to step up.
Now, we all know how dominant Howard can be. But they can’t play around with a back injury.

  • LobCity

They say DH has nerve damage so the pain can come and go, not a matter of sitting a few days. Honestly think this is a lost season for him. Think he shouldn’t have started the season and just done rehab. Although they’d probably have a worse record…

  • The Philosopher

    That’s right…
I did hear about the nerve damage.

Is it just me or is Kobe moaning even more frequently than Howard this year. At least Howard is doing his job on the defensive end. Kobe takes an iso every time and throws up tons of shots isn’t the biggest deal, but wandering on the opposite court yelling for calls off miss shots, staring at teammates for faults when it’s his inability to catch up with the opponent and whining in front of the press is definitely not gonna cut it.
Kobe – one of the All-time greatest to play, incredible work ethic, dazzling jabs and footwork, but probably one of the worse teammate with his huge ego. Yes, call me a Kobe hater while I’m not. Don’t try to correct me with his career assist averages. It doesn’t mean much as in being a good teammate.

  • roscoe

is that your “certified medical opinion” or your “stuck on the couch opinion”?

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=509819249 Gaurav P.

Kobe has been whining way too much. If he spent more time running back on D as he does throwing his hands up and complaining when he doesn’t get a call, the Lakers would get more stops. He also gambles like crazy on defense; it ruins a lot of the defensive stability that team has when he does these things.

Excuse #54 for the great Kobe Bryant. He has blamed everyone and everything under the sun but himself.

  • shockexchange

(Horry Jr voice) “Bring out the Gimp”

  • http://www.facebook.com/rainman1991 Saleem Rainman

Well, Nash takes care of his body better than anyone else in the LEague. So you know Kobe wasnt referring to Nash when he suggested his teammmates needed to take better care of their bodies.

  • LobCity

Dwight has talked about having nerve damage. The part about “the pain can come and go” comes from people that had the same surgery and still have back problems. The part about sitting out the season is indeed my “stuck on the couch opinion”. I just figure after sitting out so long and having that type of surgery it would have been better to rehab and get back into shape.

  • The Fury

This is WHY Popovich is the best coach in the NBA right now. Hey Stern, are you reading this??

  • Jim Mora

    Playoffs? You kidding me? Playoffs?

  • The Philosopher

    “But the Gimp is asleep…”

  • F

He’s also playing the most selfish basketball in his career too.

  • shockexchange

The Gimp went like 1-7 last night, he’d better step it up.

  • LakeShow

He’s playing how he’s always played. This season no different than any other.

  • roscoe

u know better than me.. i hope you back is good LobCity.

  • Omar

Kobe thinks he’s tough by cussing in every interview.

    lol. no ish batman.

  • Yusaf

Lakers should drink black tea at least in morning and night. It immensely helps level of energy, I think. Especially, Pau, who is old and weak.

    tru dat

  • http://twitter.com/SUSPECTINT44 TedBurner

Why should he blame himself? And when was he not telling the truth this year? Are you saying that he should be doing something totally different? Is it his fault Pau and D12 went 3/19 or that Nash keeps dishing the ball to him? Does he rebound the ball and bring it up court every time? I’m no KB apologist as lord knows I question his shot selection at times but this isn’t one of them. They know what he does, shoot the ball. So if he keeps getting it, its going up. Others on the team gotta show they deserve the opportunities and 3/19 is’t doing that.

  • LakeShow

    Why not Oolong with Ginseng?

  • Yusaf

Best to drink fully fermented black tea. Oolong is partially fermented and is bad for bones since calcium is flushed out during peeing process.

  • robb

Caffeine is not the answer for these guys.

  • roscoe

why not just a big kick in @ss?

  • RKJ92

The game isn’t solely based on offense Ted.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Kobe has been one of the worst defensive 2-guards in the NBA this year. He could start there.

  • LakeShow

What about Rooibos? 150 times more antioxidants than green tea. Caffeine isn’t good for you. I’d switch to a alternative energy supplement.

  • LakeShow

    Ooopsie, you forgot about:

    Dwayne Wade

    Kevin Martin

    Jason Richardson

    Joe Johnson

    Marcus Thorton

    Ray Allen

    Jason Terry

    James Harden

    Jordan Crawford

    Gerald Henderson

    OJ Mayo

    Jamaal Crawford

    John Salmons

    Marco Bellinelli

    Mike Dunleavy

    DeMar DeRozen

    Vince Carter

    Just to name a few.

  • http://www.facebook.com/Carlton.X2101Papillion Carlton Ironmanisgod Papillion

He’s old to, most of the time its his fault

  • Sergio

He is deflecting. Taking pressure away from Dwight and everyone else. Putting it on himself. They will not win this year and take it all next year.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

    Wade’s been better.

    Richardson’s been better.

    Joe Johnson’s been better.

    James Harden’s been better.

    Jordan Crawford’s been better.

Ray Allen doesn’t start – who cares.

Kevin Martin doesn’t start – who cares

Jamal Crawford doesn’t start – who cares

Vince Carter doesn’t start – who cares

Mike Dunleavy? really? he’s a shooting guard? anyway, he’s actually been, statistically, a better defender. so there goes whether or not that even matters.

Marco Bellinelli is in the same boat.

So there you go, you got, OJ, Salmons, Derozan. — Good Job.

Kobe has been one of the worst defensive STARTING 2-guards in the NBA. better?

  • https://twitter.com/Wayne__o BuenoWayno1

    foresaw this a mile away…….

  • Max

I tought Gerald Henderson was a good defender.

  • LakeShow

Naw, he’s been middle of the pack which is bad for Bean, but the whole team has been absolutely awful defensively, so why would Kobe take that upon himself.
I literally LOL when you said Jordan Crawford has been better…
You put out some gems sometimes man.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

at best, Kobe has been AS AWFUL as Jordan Crawford.

Both guys carry a D-Rating of 107, both guys play on horrible defenses.

Both guys give up roughly the exact same production on the defensive end.

    - I said Crawford was better because he doesn’t have Dwight protecting the rim, he has Nene and Emeka. — but you can say they’ve been equal, that’s fine.

.Still, Kobe’s been awful. —- I am not saying he’s the reason the Lakers suck, or even close to it. Kobe has been so great offensively, it really doesn’t matter how awful he is on defense. —- but that doesn’t change the FACT that Kobe has been an AWFUL defensive player this season.

  • Redd

Before Kobe said he’s never been this good in a while but now he’s old. Metta put him in check tho, he’s right.

  • LakeShow

I agree with this entire post.
One slight disagreement… Dwight ain’t Dwight right now… Kobe’s defensive would be better if Howard’s was…
    BUT yes, AWFUL.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

    That’s totally fair

  • LakeShow

We would probably have heard allot more moaning out of KB in his career if he was losing like he is this year…
You win, you don’t b*tch. Lose? You’ll be in diapers in no time.

  • Sérgio

I really think you are underrating badly Kobe’s defense. Ok, he obviously ain’t the defender he once was, and he tends to pack the paint and leave his man open a lot of times (but let’s be real: all Lakers players do that), but he is not a bad defender at all. And NBK, you know that no statistic has been able to properly rate someone’s defense. But, if you love them so much, I suggest you take a look at this: opponents guarded by Kobe have the 12th worst FG% this season: http://espn.go.com/blog/truehoop/post/_/id/52523/better-right-now-kobe-or-carmelo .

  • Josh

Look at his numbers. Rethink your statement. Suck a dick.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

I was just showing the advanced stats compared to Crawford. How I know he’s been awful is from watching and reading game summaries. The fact that he looks like a great one on one defender doesn’t surprise me. He is guarding the worst offensive wing on opposing teams and is literally not taking part in the whole “team defense” aspect of defense. He’s been awful. But like I said, he’s been so great on offense it really doesn’t matter.

just coz you like to slobber on a dobber doesnt mean others do. Look at his numbers . rethink your statement

    Shut it B***

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Derozan has been trying harder. That doesn’t mean he’s been more than bad.

  • Mackenzie Kerridge

Mike D’Antoni is not the answer for this team, simple as that!

  • http://twitter.com/Jzakoni Sanchez

    hahah its the truth

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=509819249 Gaurav P.

Actually, he’s held himself accountable for his turnovers numerous times.

+ Howard ain’t doing his job on D . Face it.
