Rajon Rondo Wants Rudy Gay to Play in Boston

by Marcel Mutoni @ marcel_mutoni

That the Memphis Grizzlies are considering trading Rudy Gay is the NBA’s worst-kept secret.

The Grizz are reportedly talking to a number of teams around the League about taking on Gay and his big-money deal, and one of the organizations on the other end of the phone line happens to be the Boston Celtics. Rajon Rondo, for one, is a fan of this potential development.

Rudy Gay, who now admits that the trade rumors are starting to mentally affect him, says that Rondo wants him as a teammate in Beantown.

From Yahoo! Sports:

Whether it’s close friend Rajon Rondo, Jarrett Jack, or other basketball colleagues, Memphis Grizzlies forward Rudy Gay has been leaning on his circle of NBA friends to get him through recent trade speculation. While Rondo, according to Gay, is giving sound advice, the Boston Celtics guard can’t help being a little selfish.

“It’s hard to talk to [Rondo] because he is always saying, ‘We need you over here. We need you over here,’ ” Gay said. “So it’s not easy talking to him. But he’s being a friend, just telling me about keeping everything together and he makes you feel like you are still valuable.” [...] Gay, 26, said he would like to stay in Memphis, but added that he would be happy wherever he plays. “I’m more than just a basketball player and wherever I am, or will be, or wherever I go, they are going to realize I’m more than just a basketball player,” Gay said. “I can give just as much as I did here, if not more.”

According to multiple reports, a trade doesn’t appear imminent. Sorry, Rajon.

Rudy Gay believes the Memphis Grizzlies — a team increasingly being thrust into the spotlight — is a true NBA championship contender.

what does being more than a basketball player matter to the team that trades for you? i think they’d rather you be just a better basketball player. Maybe i’m crazy.

  • JML-G

guess Rondo is saying they need to get rid off Jeff Green lol.. DMC over Gay if Boston gets to choose tho

  • pposse

this is a goddamn shame..i was really looking forward to seeing what a fully stacked Grizzly team could do in the playoffs (western conference finals was the prediction) but now they are trying to getting rid their best wing player. There was a week in the beginning of the season that Rudy Gay outplayed Lebron, KD, Kobe and Carmello en route to victories. Sure he takes dumb shots sometimes, but his length and talent cannot be replaced. Memphis could really do some work this year, championship work. Give him until the end of this year to prove himself Memphis!!

if they trade him for some much needed depth, and run the offense through their bigs, they may end up better

    I liked his sentiment though

i also hope he stays in memphis

if they trade him, grizzlies are gay.. *drumroll*

nba players do more than play. Do you not see all the volunteer work they do and everything in the communities? They make a big impact and that’s what the nba is most proud of. A player being just as good off the court as he is on the court increases value. So the fact that he said that increases his chances of staying because the team will realize what they’d lose and that’s a positive influence for the community

  • pposse

yeah but i thought they are shopping him around to get his salary off the books? Plus a Rudy Gay much like a Danny Granger are the type of players you need to stop the upper echelon wing players in the game right now.

Lol don’t be naive. When you get paid a max salary and don’t play to that level, that’s ALL that matters.

    No

Reminds me of Andre Iguoadala’s situation.
Received the money of a superstar… but never quite made it to the level of a superstar on the floor.
But still an impact player. He’s a #2 man.

  • pposse

I agree but the Memphis Grizzlies have probably the best starting unit. Isn’t it best for them all to defer to each other??

  • gusisit

i agree wait to the summer if were going to do it, but i remember when we beat the spurs in the playoffs we didnt have rudy, just a thought, if we could get jeff green, lee and maybe a fab melo or sullinger aand a first we could maybe play better just focusing on the bigs inside, not many teams have 2 bigs that can do what memphis’ can

    That was dirty, Sanchez.

  • The Philosopher

Ideally, that would be preferable with all teams. Players have to buy into that.
But offensively, Rudy Gay is the most naturally gifted on that team. And when a player is the most undeniably talented offensive player on their respective teams, it usually would behoove the said team to exact deference to the most talented player(s) on offense.

The thing with Gay is that, one night, he looks like an elite player in the League. The next two nights, he looks like less than an elite player. In my estimation.
It can be frustrating for many involved.

celtics need bass you don’t know what you just said

    iiiii shoulda bought u flowerssss

  • Dacre

Ironically if he played basketball at a lower level he wouldn’t command the $$$ and they could keep him.

  • Redd

By the way, it’s being reported that Kings are moving to Seattle, seems like a deal is very close to completion.

  • Hugo Silva

Actually there was a report that said that the deal isnt even close. The kings owner recently said so.

  • mike

if they can afford to keep this nucleus together, they can create a dynasty like the spurs, or at the very least, the jazz did in the 90′s. a team that goes to the conference finals for 10 years and finals maybe once or twice, and even wins a title. this is an amazing unit. its a shame the small market teams simply cant hold on to their talent.

  • Redd

This report is today, a few hours ago I believe.

  • Girl Scout Cookies

Sweet, get Gay this season, sign Al Jefferson over the summer. Celts back at the top.

  • pposse

    i hear that

  • ErnieD

They should do the trade next season, but I guess they think they can get more now. No way the C’s get him, unless they did something like Paul Pierce and a #1. That way, both teams would remain strong for the playoffs, Boston gets it’s player for the future, and Grizz keep the payroll lower for next season, and have an extra draft pick to maybe package to move up. I still think Boston needs someone in the middle (Jefferson, Okafor, Cousins) to free up more space for KG, more than they need someone like Rudy. Jeff Green will ultimately take Pierce’s position. I think he will be much more consistent as a starter.
