The Memphis Grizzlies Have Reportedly Discussed Trading Zach Randolph

The front-office in Memphis is keeping busy these days. And it’s not just all about shipping Rudy Gay out of town — the Grizzlies are said to also be exploring the possibility of trading Zach Randolph, however unlikely that may be. Reports the Commercial Appeal: “Griz CEO Jason Levien, whom principal owner Robert Pera has entrusted to run the franchise, is gauging the value of several players on the roster. There also have been exploratory trade conversations centered on forward Zach Randolph. The Sacramento Kings are one of the teams with whom the Griz recently held preliminary talks, according to a league source. Most, if not all, of the Grizzlies’ trade talks have been cursory in nature so there is no concrete framework for what any trade would look like. Memphis is staring at a $4 million luxury tax bill for this season, and the Grizzlies will be a tax payers for the next couple of years due in large part to the combined salaries of their top four players. Gay and Randolph earn roughly the same salary ($16.5 million) this season and next when both are owed $17.8 million. Gay, though, appears to be the player most likely to leave via trade mainly because Gay is perceived to have more trade value. Gay, 26, is younger and more athletic than Randolph, 31, who has had two major knee injuries in his career. There also is a growing belief within the organization that Gay’s on-court performance doesn’t justify his maximum salary.”

I will not be renewing my season tickets if we trade ZBO, and I have a feeling a lot of others feel the same way. http://www.nba.com/video/channels/nba_tv/2013/01/07/20130107-made-memphis-pt3.nba/

show some loyalty to players who made this franchise relevant for the very first time (as good as Pau might been back in the day, he never made Memphis a good team) smh

  • ChosenOne

What are the Grizzlies doing?? Damn!

  • M Cho

Even if it’s the Grizz just answering the phone and listening to offers, it’s not a good idea to let that kind of thing leak out. The locker room is gonna suffer for this.

trying to avoid the luxury tax — and they think they’ve hit their ceiling with this roster.

Aw this would make me really sad. I love Z-Bo in Memphis

Back to irrelevancy if they trade Randolph regardless of who they get in return. His toughness is rare. He and Marc play very well together. As for Rudy Gay, they were dumb enough to give him that contract. No one’s fault but theirs. This isn’t like OKC who couldn’t afford to keep Harden, Durant, Westbrook and Ibaka. They should have offered a reasonable contract to Rudy years ago or let him go to Minnesota when he wanted to. They wouldn’t be in this mess had they done that.

This is what’s wrong with the NBA. The new collective bargaining agreement, while making it hard for teams to stockpile stars, has had the unforseen affect of making it difficult for smaller market teams like Memphis to stay intact. The Grizzlies can bring the heat to anybody in the L and are one of the year’s best stories. If they are broken up, fans will lose interest … foretold here > http://www.clicky.me/coverart.

that was such a good comment until you took a shameless plug at taking credit for predicting the future.

  • shockexchange

If the Shock Exchange said “the sky is blue,” would that be a shameless plug or simply speaking facts?

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

you said, specifically, in your book, that this situation will cause teams, like the Grizzlies to have to break up their roster? All of them? Some of Them? What did you actually foretell that relates directly to Rudy Gay or Zach Randolph being traded from the Memphis Grizzlies?

  • shockexchange

Why don’t you tell me what the Shock Exchange said. The Shock Exchange is wounded now.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Why don’t you? You are going to take credit for something without actually proving it? I am not giving you my hard earned money to see if maybe you are telling the truth, when exaggerating the truth is the only thing i’ve ever seen you do.

  • shockexchange

You mean to tell me you seriously don’t know this by heart? And this ^ “the unkindest cut of all.” Shock Exchange out.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

    it’s “unkindest”

  • shockexchange

    That too.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

you corrected yourself!?!? color me impressed.

  • shockexchange

Hard to do three things at once. Anyway, you should be ashamed of yourself, implying the Shock Exchange doesn’t kick facts. (Rent-A-Center voice) “Hello Brooklyn.”

The Shock Exchange has a saying for moments like this, “Thy protest too much.” That said, the analysis you’re looking for concerning the Grizzlies and similar small market teams is on page 46.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Lol, misquoting Shakespeare again? it’s “doth protest too much” – do you even know what it means? Or do you have your own definition? .
And Again, I am not giving you my money for a point that I really don’t care if you predicted or not. I’m not the one claiming to tell the future.
