Toronto Raptors Reportedly Pushing for a Rudy Gay Trade

Memphis Grizzlies forward Rudy Gay has been involved in a million and one trade rumors so far this season. Despite Memphis management saying they’re unlikely to make a major more, this will continue to be the case up until the February 21 trade deadline. The latest involves the Grizzlies and Toronto Raptors. Per ESPN: “Although the framework of a workable trade has not yet been established, sources said that Toronto — known to be perhaps Gay’s most determined suitor — has continued to make a hard push for the swingman. The Grizzlies, though, maintain that last week’s luxury-tax-slashing trade with Cleveland means they no longer feel the same pressure to move Gay or another high-priced player before the NBA’s Feb. 21 trade deadline. New Grizzlies CEO Jason Levien told local reporters late last week that ‘we really like our team’ and that it is ‘more likely than not that we do nothing’ in terms of breaking up Memphis’ marquee foursome of Gay, point guard Mike Conley, forward Zach Randolph and center Marc Gasol. But sources say that the Raptors, undaunted by that stance, continue to pursue Gay and also covet Grizzlies forward Darrell Arthur. Toronto, sources said, has made veteran point guard Jose Calderon and blossoming young forward Ed Davis available as the two cornerstones of its offer. Other teams remain engaged with the Grizzlies as well, as Memphis officials continue to weigh whether it is best to trade Gay or keep together the core of a team that has ranked among the top four in the Western Conference. If talks with the Raptors do progress, according to sources, it’s possible that a trade with Memphis could expand to include other teams and players. NBA front-office sources have maintained for weeks that Calderon (who has an expiring contract), fellow Raptors point guard Kyle Lowry (only $1 million in guaranteed salary next season) and former No. 1 overall pick Andrea Bargnani all are available.”

Poor Rudy. He and DeRozan would be a lot of fun to watch highlight-wise though.

  • amerie

WHY Rudy? Are they really thinkin they can got someone better than him?

  • RobbieJay

i really think the grizz front office should let this group go as far as it can. worry about the tax AFTER the season. unless they really, really, REALLY cant afford it.

  • spit hot fiyah

poor Memphis if they make this trade. giving up gay for a backup pg and and a guy who probably wont be able to take arthur’s minutes

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

Few guys in the league can at least challenge Durant when he shoots. Rudy’s physical gifts are similar to Durant. If Memphis trades Rudy and they have to face OKC in the postseason, they have no one who can even make Durant think before he does what he does.

Clearly these trade rumors have affected his play on the court, with the exception of last night. I just hate to see my guy end up in NBA purgatory which is Toronto. If this trade goes through Memphis go from contenders to just a solid team IMO.

  • Shawn B

Wont be able to take Arthurs minutes? I like Darrell Arthur but Ed Davis is better than him, look at the numbers he has put up since Andrea Bargnani went down, they are very good. And as a raptor fan I would love to see Rudy Gay, but I am hesistant trading Davis because he has taken Bargnani’s starting spot and has been such a consistent player for them

  • Redd

That’s so lopsided, they better throw in Ross instead of Calderon.

  • Memphis sucks…

Rudy you gotta leave that memphis… it’s such a boring an unknown place… your stuck in NBA purgatory… you come to toronto you will be in the east all star game for sure while competing for the playoffs with lowry, derozan, ross, valanciunas.

  • Memphis sucks…

    and i’m from memphis :P

  • http://twitter.com/niQknacks niQ

    Take Bargnani. Please.

  • danpowers

i wish rudy that this wont happen. he deserves much better than that

  • patrick

bargnani available eh? gm colangelo finally willing to part ways?

  • J Rog

    Yeah, we believe that…..

  • Max

For that to be true you should have said ‘you should go to Toronto’, not ‘you come to Toronto’.

looooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooool ok max you can read between the line. memphis sucks is probably redd

  • Bravo

Damn I would love to have Rudy gay on the raptors but if it means giving up Jose and Ed Davis than I say no way. But of its barns and Lowry I don’t mind

  • Redd

Why would the Grizz take up a bad contract alongside a horrible player?

  • http://twitter.com/niQknacks niQ

From what I gather, they would want Calderon for his expiring contract.

  • Redd

True, but the talent is lopsided. Taking Jose & then Biryani would be nonsensical both talent & contract wise.

  • LeroyShonuff

Toronto is def NBA purgatory. Never good enough to be heaven but never bad enough to be hell. It’s like you exist but then you don’t. Sorta like a known unknown

  • RealLastDragon

Well, it’s where Vince and T-Mac made their name so it can’t be that bad.

  • Anthony Dixon

Memphis does not want to win. And gay will stunt Derozan’s growth.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

nobody is taking Bargani lol, don’t worry.

  • jakewhatever

there isn’t a world that exists in which ed davis is better than a fully healthy DA.

the ESPN headline at one point said Raptors trying to get Gay

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Mike-Gilbert/100001749589586 Mike Gilbert

what are you Raptors fans going to do??? don’t they not get their draft pick unless they make the playoffs?

  • Fishsticks

As a raptor fan, I really, really really hope this doesn’t happen…. Davis has a high ceiling and is playing great, and Gay is getting paid huge money to score a tiny bit more than Derozan at a much more inefficient pace. Plus with DD and Gay on the floor, the entire offense would turn into a mid range game without any spacing at all. Not worth sacrificing the future for a couple seesons with an over payed star

  • JamesHD15

    To Toronto:
    Rudy Gay
    To Memphis:
    Andrea Bargnani
    Avery Bradley
    Courtney Lee
    To Boston:
    Kyle Lowry
    Seems fair?

Oh man I watch rogers Nba TV it plays that nonstop “simply delicious, everyone knows its primo” song Oh my God.

  • http://twitter.com/thursti_tyht Thurstian Tsui

And the Raptors know that too, unfortunately he’s just dead weight. Rudy is a good player but Ed Davis would be sorely missed if we decide to package him off and they keep trying to trade Jose which sucks because I love him as a player.

I think a package involving ross or anderson is more realistic and better for us.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

i think Toronto, unless they want to perpetually be first round road kill, or useless lottery fodder, should stay away from Rudy Gay.

  • Lloyd

Would love to see Rudy in a raps uniform, but knowing us we’re going to give up way too much to get it done, especially if a third team is involved. If we give up Ed, Colangelo better pray that Jonas pans outs.

  • http://twitter.com/stepfdelaghetto Stepfan Raiford

    And then they left.

  • http://twitter.com/thursti_tyht Thurstian Tsui

Not really, Boston would get Kyle Lowry for the rest of this year knowing that next year Rondo would be back and will retake the starting lineup. Also Lowry only has like a year on his deal after this season and is a ufa after.

This would also destroy Boston’s depth, getting rid of all their backups and would leave a three guard rotation of Lowry, Terry and Barbosa. That’s absolutely horrible. Boston should blow the team up even though most of their players have relatively low trade value.

  • http://twitter.com/thursti_tyht Thurstian Tsui

There’s also a huge fanbase in Toronto, we’re not “purgatory” we’ve been struggling since Chris Bosh left. The Chris Bosh era is what you would call ‘never good enough to be heaven’ because we were always borderline 8th seed area.

Now we’re trying to rebuild with our draft picks which is going great, just look at our record we’re one win better than last year or the same. That’s amazing improvement.

  • http://twitter.com/thursti_tyht Thurstian Tsui

Definitely agree, unfortunately I don’t think our roster is even talented enough to make the playoffs even further down the road. Teams like the Pistons and maybe the Cavs (even though this year has been average, Kyrie though) have done far better with building up their talent.

  • davidR

i dont get to watch the raptors that often, but from the outside it looks like they are playing tough with davis and amir as the starting bigs. i’m surprised lowry is having issues there, but i figured a core of lowry amir and davis isn’t bad. what exactly is their problem?

EDIT: oh and ross and derozan

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

what Toronto, and more importantly Bryan Colangelo need to do, is let the team bottom out without spending money on,

    .TJ Ford
    .Hedo Turkoglu
    .Andrea Bargani
    .Jose Calderon
    .Linas Kleiza
    .Jason Kapono
    .Rasho Nesterovic

  • http://twitter.com/thursti_tyht Thurstian Tsui

A big part of the problem is consistency, the Raptors can’t seem to string together a full 4 quarters of basketball, they start to look real lethargic as the game progresses.

Compared to last year, their defense has been absolutely atrocious.

Lowry hasn’t been much help since his start to the season, he’s been injured and struggling to perform, meanwhile Jose has been playing much better ball for the club. Landry Fields has yet to pay off either.

Ed Davis has only started to play well lately but him and Amir are forming into a tough frontcourt, we really need Valanciunas back though because despite Amir’s hustle and performance lately, we need someone bigger to lock down centers.

    Tony Allen?

  • http://twitter.com/Jzakoni Sanchez

damn memphis. wait till after the season. smh

  • what

Any trade is unfair to whoever gets Bargnani.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

Too short. And Kevin’s handle has gotten a lot better. Plus, who would try to guard Westbrook if Allen took Durant? Mike Conley?

  • Caboose

    Landry Fields.

  • dboy!

it doesnt seems fair for boston

    Dammit I can’t beliee i forgot Landry

    Everyone knows the struggle looool

  • KBM

Bingo. Should’ve just drafted RG instead.

  • VanCityBBall

When ever i see a headline that invovles the Raptors and trade rumours, i always immediately think “i dont care just ship off Barg’s and im good” even if it has nothing to do with him… does that make me a bad person?

  • KBM

    Preach it brother.

  • KBM

The problem is that they don’t have enough talent. I’m not a Raptor hater, it’s just a fact. When we pass on players in the draft, not only are those talented players not on our team, they’re on other teams making them better.

  • KBM

We have been ‘rebuilding’ for half a decade, and no, it’s not going well.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Mike-Gilbert/100001749589586 Mike Gilbert

    wouldn’t the Celtics want him?

  • burrrrr

    LOL and his plucked eyebrows

  • Mr.Wang

this man speaks the truth about Rondo, Celtics, and KG

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Dammit man. I can’t believe I forgot Landry

  • http://twitter.com/thursti_tyht Thurstian Tsui

Calderon would be good for the Celtics in some ways because they can get poing guard help for this year and can let him go if they want to next season since he’ll be a free agent.
