LeBron James Dismisses Michael Jordan Picking Kobe Bryant Over Him

Michael Jordan raised more than a few eyebrows when he chose Kobe Bryant over LeBron James during an interview that will be televised on Monday, citing Kobe’s five NBA titles to LeBron’s one. James, too busy dominating the League to get into any kind of historical debate with MJ, said he doesn’t care what anyone thinks of him at this point. Not even Michael. Per the Miami Herald: “In an interview with NBATV, Jordan said he would take Bryant over James based on the fact that Bryant has won more championships. The majority owner and head of basketball operations for the Charlotte Bobcats, Jordan has had a spotty career as an evaluator of talent, but he probably couldn’t go wrong with either superstar. Still, given the choice, His Airness would take Bryant. ‘Five beats one every time I look at it,’ Jordan said. ‘And not that [James] won’t get five. He may get more than that, but five is bigger than one.’ [...] ‘It doesn’t matter to me,’ James said. ‘If you take Kobe one and I go second, it doesn’t matter. I don’t get too involved in what guys say about me or if you take Kobe or if you take LeBron. As long as I’m on the floor and I make plays for my teammates, I don’t do what I do for other people’s approval.’”

I like LeBron’s mindset. You watch him and Durant play each other and you see that there’s still a significant distance between them. I noticed that after the 08 Olympics, LeBron stopped referring to Kobe as the best player in the league. There’s a good reason for that. He is in complete control of the game and as Kenny said last night, he still can improve defensively even though he’s already great on that end of the floor. I think people should remember that dude averaged 30 ppg in a season before he was completely comfortable with his jumpshot. His balance was still off. As for Jordan’s comments, TNT showed a clip last night and he mentioned LeBron’s dominance right now. I’m interested to see what he has to say about him in the full interview. The most interesting thing he said in the clip to me is he thinks LeBron may get more than 5 championships.

  • thesage

For a player that once wore number 23, he is clearly downplaying this.

  • shockexchange

Good comeback LeBron. Notice how he never says “I don’t care about the LeBron Rules … Keys to Stopping LeBron James.” That’s his competitive advantage.

  • Happy

Well he did change his number to separate his identity so…

  • Anthony Dixon

    LOL

  • KevinJohnsonFan

Many players wore 23 because of Jordan. LeBron was different only because he’s the best player to wear it since Jordan. His game is all his though. Never tried to play or act like Jordan.

  • Happy

I know. Louis Williams is one who still wears it. I was happy when Lebron changed it though.

  • Caboose

Just saying, Duncan is overlooked again. Jordan should use his own stupid logic: well, 3Finals MVP’s are greater than 2. 3 is always greater than 2.

  • Gman

Did he? I thought he picked 6 in memory of MJs 6 titles.

  • http://twitter.com/LuisBrownish Luis Moreno

    kevin martin..lmao

  • EJ

6 was his number in the olympics, that’s why he took it.

  • EJ

    But 4<5

  • danpowers

kind euphemism to call jordan’s carreer of evaluating talent “spotty”. he just gave us another example of how bad his judgement of talent actually is.

  • mike

6 was his number in honor of Bill Russell… Russell won 11 championships , MJ won 6 …. by MJ’s thought process , 11>6 … aka Bill Russell > MJ

  • Caboose

Which is nonsensical. I hate the rings argument. The Finals MVP argument is ALSO weak, but still miles ahead of the ring count.

  • shutup

Duncan has 6 letters; Kobe has 4. 6>4 lmfao.

  • Yesse

Miami Heat has retired number 23 in honor of MJ. Look it up. He can’t wear that number in Miami anyways.

  • Lorne

He changed his number before he signed with them.

  • http://twitter.com/thursti_tyht Thurstian Tsui

Yeah he told everyone he wasn’t going to wear 23 anymore and didn’t think anyone else should either.

  • Dymez

It’s crazy to see how far out of context this little quote has been taken these past couple of days. But, media + gullibility = headlines. So be it.

  • Redd

I think he overreacted. Mj did say 5 trumps 5 but that it doesn’t mean Lebron won’t get more than 5, meaning he could eventually become better.

    What a drama queen.

  • Fat Lever

LBJ’s response is one that’s mature and demonstrates that he’s completely comfortable in his own skin now.

If this was brought to him 2 years ago, I wonder what his response would have been then.

To me, this dominance this year clearly demonstrates how the mental aspect is so crucial to success. Lebron seems at peace now, which is ironic since he’s creating havoc for everyone else.

  • Happy

Overreacted? He didn’t say he was mad at anyone for their opinion. He said he doesn’t play for anyone else’s approval, which he shouldn’t. How is that an overreaction?

  • http://twitter.com/Jzakoni Sanchez

    oh hell yeah he will

  • http://twitter.com/Jzakoni Sanchez

lebron was a huge advocate for every NBA team to retire 23

  • Redd

He acted as tho he was slighted..clearly.

  • Happy

True. Little known fact: He actually filed paperwork with the league to do it. That’s significant because it tells you he was still considering playing in Cleveland at the time. NBA rules dictate that you must only ask permission to change your number when you are staying with your team. If you switch teams, you can change numbers without permission.

  • Happy

Not sure where you go that info. I couldn’t find anything to verify it. I did find this though:

“My second-favorite player was Julius Erving, and he wore No. 6,” James said. “I wore 32 in high school because Dr. J wore it at first. My first child was born on Oct. 6, it’s my Olympic number, my second child was born in June.”

  • RipCity

    like that wouldn’t happen anyways

  • marc

nah, this is just to get clicks man, in the interview, he paused and said lebron was dominating right now but he’d take kobe because of the 5 rings and career totality, lebron’s just half way through his career though

  • marc

did you watch the clip? media is taking it out of context though

  • marc

yes, but he did answer durant when asked lebron or kobe though,

  • Lorne

He acted? You saw the clip of him looking upset when he was answering? You seem to be the only person who “clearly” saw this. I’m curious as to what you saw that gave you that impression. What would have been an appropriate response to you?

  • robb

MJ was very respectful towards Lebron when he answered and he never said Kobe was better or anything like that, this is just some media gossip crap, always trying to get people reacting and creating controversy to sell notes.

  • http://twitter.com/thePharaoh_ A.Feroz

If LeBron can get even 3-4 rings hes gonna pass Jordan as the GOAT

  • KC

Great response. Mike is retired and has never faced lebron on the court. His opinion means nothing. He is watching the games the same way we do. Obviously Mikes talent Evaluation is’t that great with the continued embarrassment of a franchise called the bobcats.

  • Whoareyou

Sure he would love the cosign from his long time idol, but at this point from all the greats and analysts constantly praising him I’m sure this honestly doesn’t hurt his ego as much as it would’ve 3 years ago.

  • http://www.facebook.com/jay.brodes Jay Brodes

watching the clip on tnt last night it is not as much of a diss as in print. mj took some time and basically stated right now kobe has 5 to bron’s 1. he also said kb does whatever it takes..guarding pgs at this point in his career. needless to say if you think about kb was 18 when he came in the league. mj took him under his wing in the 1998 all star game. mj views kb like a son as strange as that sounds. i am not surprised by his statement at all!

  • danpowers

    with poor judgement

  • Sweet Brown

Hmmm? Five better than one? Then why does Kobe keep playing one on five…

  • LakeShow

    lol

  • AQWORD

Solution. He should change his number to 25.

  • Taz

He picked 6 cause Jordan’s 23 is retired in Miami, that’s why.

  • Yi-Cheng Chen

jordan is saying just not to disrespect both parties. it’s respect when these kind of questions pop up and there’s have to be an answer.

  • Yi-Cheng Chen

i would choose Horry over Jordan. Oops.

  • Me

I think he knew he was going to Miami for awhile, made all that noise about everyone retiring the number cuz Pat Riley had already done it. This way it didn’t look like he was “forced” to change it when he signed, like it was his choice.

    mike means 6 > 5 > 1. Jordan > Kobe > Lebron

31 points on 15/16 shooting I would say it has already happened. Lmao probably why MJ snubbed him jk.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000166716900 Anthony Darnello Taylor Jr.

Am I wrong but didnt he say based on what LBJ is doing now he would start a team with him ?

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000166716900 Anthony Darnello Taylor Jr.

Lol they didnt ask him about duncan though sooooo….yeah. Im sure if they did it would make a more intersting decision process. Duncan was always the best on his fing winning squads hands down he was batman closest threat was Tony parker who was nightwing at best in that series at least. If they won now it would be opposite.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000166716900 Anthony Darnello Taylor Jr.

Yeah tonight on TNT Lebron did obviously appear a little slighted but he made great points about what defines a players individual greatness. Rings translate into great teams most of the time.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000166716900 Anthony Darnello Taylor Jr.

With those three you cannot really pick a wrong answer only a better answer with Lebron being the best choice.

  • O

Let’s keep it 1000, Jordan is hating. Son know his legacy is in the kind of JEOPARDY that Alex Trebek could call the outcome without three contestants. That’s why he’d give everything up to come back. At the same time, we have to acknowledge, MJ had a TEAM. Pippen, Grant, Cartwright, Kerr, Rodman, Harper, etc. and won 6 rings. So far LeBron has had a SQUAD at his helm. Wade, Bosh, Miller, Battier, Haslem, and now Allen and Lewis – and dunn got one ring, but WILL win more. If MJ had a SQUAD like that, he’d be one or two rings behind Bill Russell. Let’s not even get started with the hand checking rules. MJ was the man before and after those went into effect. LeBron is theee greatest of this generation (no apologies to Durant, Melo or Rose), but take away Wade, Bosh and all those d*ck riding ring chasers, and his team would be another Cavaliers. Wade and Bosh been putting up DOPE numbers lately, but no one give a damn cause LeBron been on Jupiter with his. He may be better than Jordan, but he sure as hell had a lot more help them him too. Got mad love for ya LeBron (even got ya rookie card), but you got more help now than G-Dub in the 2000 Presidential election. You still that dude though. Make no mistake.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000166716900 Anthony Darnello Taylor Jr.

You can’t really say a loaded roster does it all, Look at the Lakers, Look at the Knicks both of those teams have three olympians 5 gold medalists one silver medal winner who was the best on his squad. Neither of those teams are title favorites.

  • Irishway’s

That would be funny if Lebron just up and decided to were 23 at a bobcat game… History repeating itself.. Jordan only bring this up cuss Kobe more comparable to himself an Lebron is The King…. no disrespect to his Airness

  • The Seed

MJ understands basketball and he wants Bron to do more. Kobe has established himself as a great. Like Dirk stated in an article Slam will not post. Dirk stated Kobe has been the best player in the NBA the last 15 years. Watch everybody act like Dirk is off his rockers, when most of yall was all over him just 3 to 4 years ago when he got a ring. Kobe still has years left, Bron is playing well, but its being overhyped. During this time, Bosh is shooting over 60 percent too and Wade has a high fg percentage too. Once Bron loses in the playoffs this year, it will go back to he can’t shoot and he shrinks under pressure. Bron lucked up, against OKC, with KD having no Fire, or he would have been 0-3 in NBA Finals. Its funny Bron knows the truth and Wade does too. Wade has stated this about the dumb Bron-MJ comparison. Go look it up. Wade knows his career is looking worse by the second, he needs Bron to leave or if Bron keeps winning MVP’s with Wade on the team too, he will be seen in the history books as lower than Pippen. At least Kobe played so well he stopped Shaq from getting MVP trophies. Wade cannot do that now and Bron is getting the benefit of the doubt. The real MVP of the NBA is Chris Paul to be honest. BOOK IT!!!

  • Gabo

Beautiful words. Do they mean something, too?

    haha for real…
