Mike Krzyzewski Confirms He’s Out as Team USA Coach

Despite USA Basketball’s hope that he’d reconsider, Duke University head coach Mike Krzyzewski confirmed today that he will no longer sit on Team USA’s bench. Coach K’s seven-year reign is over. Per ESPN: “Krzyzewski said USA Basketball will likely name his successor this summer in preparation for the 2014 world championships in Madrid. ‘I’ve loved, loved, loved, and it’s been an honor being with the USA Basketball team,’ Krzyzewski said. ‘And to coach the team and work with [chairman and president Jerry Colangelo] for seven years has been marvelous. And we’re in a good spot,’ Krzyzewski added. ‘We need to keep building.’ Krzyzewski was hired by Colangelo in the wake of the team’s disappointing sixth-place finish at the 2002 World Championships in Indianapolis and a bronze medal at the 2004 Olympics in Greece. Under Krzyzewski, Team USA beat Spain in consecutive Olympic finals, in Beijing in 2008 and London in 2012. His U.S. team won the 2010 FIBA World Championship in Turkey without a single Olympian on the roster.”

Doc Rivers. Greg Popovich. Pick one.

  • Royce12

To piggyback off of this I think it’s time to pull the pro players from Olympic competition. We have sent a message and proven our point. Our best players are better than your best players.. Lets give the NBDL players a shot at it.

    Vinny D got next.

  • Jackson Shaughnessey

Yeah, let’s do that so we get embarrassed on a regular basis. This isn’t about sending “pro” players. It’s about sending our best. Other countries send their best and brightest. We should as well, proudly.

    Go on and kill me…
But D’Antoni would be good for this gig.
His style fits well with all the athletes and shooters we send over there.
Plus he’s been there the last few times. He know’s the core. Keep Nate McMillan there also.

  • Max

They need to look at CP3 for the headcoaching position.

  • Max

Sending DLeague players would not make any sense.
I would like to see a mix of allstars and up and comers like Faried and Lillard.

“And that’s not all…From now on we’ll just be sending Lebron by himself”, Colangelo did not necessarily say.

  • RayJr

    I can see that.

  • RKJ92

*picks* Vinny Del Negro — LOL

    John Wooden Jr.

  • whooo!

How epic would it be for Pop to get the gig and end up resting stars during the competitions.

Assuming Dwight is healthy for the next international games, will he chose to play for Pringles after spending all season complaining about lack of paint touches. And also, assuming Pau is healthy for the next run, he will most certainly go Full Debo on the USA, dropping 40-20-15 before tweeting “Bench THAT!”

i just don’t think NBDL players would cut it at this point. USA barely won against spain in those two occasions. I’m not saying they didn’t win, it’s just that USA needs to send their best available squad. Sending just NBA players doesn’t guarantee a Gold anymore.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Pop has had the gig. The last time the team didn’t win anything. He’s not getting it again.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

there is a 0.00% chance Popovich gets that job again.

  • whooo!

Naw, he was an assistant to Larry Brown who led the bronze medal team in ’04. From what’s been rumored though there’s beef with Colangelo and Pop that makes him unlikely to be chosen anyways.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Ahh sh*t my bad. But yeah the Colangelo issue is the main thing, I forgot he wasn’t actually the coach when that happened tho.

is this representative of the USA players not being up to coach k’s expectations?

… or coach k just saying his job is done??

… or that coach k. see the rest of the world catching up???

  • danpowers

i think the last spain finals were as close as it gets. the usa have the advantage of being so large to have a broad talent pool and a great basketball infrastructure. i dont think that china would catch up with basketball knowhow anytime soon. russia emphazises soccer/football like almost the rest of the world anyway and other great basketball nations are smaller in terms of inhabitants than the usa which makes it not so probable that they actually catch up eye to eye. its obvious that the gap became a little smaller during the years but the usa will stay state of the art in basketball as long as all of us live

  • roscoe

    well said dp.

that game “could have” (maybe) gone to Espana if Marc was not injured imo & considering he picked up 3 fouls in the 1st half quickly (if i remember correctly) that sort of controlled the outcome & allowed USA to play their game.

its not so much the rest of the world has the talent of d’USA but they have cohesion which is their biggest advantage.

  • VanCityBBall

hear me out… what about Doug Collins?

  • http://twitter.com/ec_lkhaa Will Lee

sounds like he’s fired LOL. Gotta hire Del Negro now

  • omphalos

Maybe Nate McMillan? He’s a capable head coach who’s been with the program for a while now.
