John Wall Says He’s the NBA’s Fastest Player

Despite the OKC Thunder pounding his team 103-80 last night, Washington Wizards point guard John Wall remains a very confident fella. Wall claims that he’s faster than Russell Westbrook and everyone else in the League. Per the Oklahoman: “Different people have different opinions on who blazes the biggest blur. But make no mistake about John Wall’s allegiances in this debate. His unwavering support is for John Wall. ‘No,’ Wall said, when asked if Thunder guard Russell Westbrook was the fastest player in the league. ‘I’m going to say myself.’ Ok then, is Westbrook at least second? ‘It’s tough man,’ Wall said in the postgame locker room Wednesday night, minutes after shooting 3/18 in Washington’s 103-80 loss to Westbrook’s Thunder. ‘There’s a couple fast guys in this league. He’s up there, Derrick’s up there, when he’s healthy. Mike Conley’s pretty quick. There’s a couple guys. Ty Lawson’s quick. So there’s a lot of guys, but I put myself first.’ Despite that unabashed confidence, Wall was still very complimentary of Westbrook after the loss, even admitting that Westbrook is at a place in his career Wall hopes to one day find himself.”

    “Nah, I told y’all I ain’t no max player. But I’m quick, though…”

  • AjFromTheDMV

Fastest with ball in hand = It’s Wall no doubt; but Lawson, Rose, & Westbrook have faster 3/4 court times. People would be surprised that Sonny Weems & Toney Douglas have the fastest 3/4 times.

  • http://twitter.com/stepfdelaghetto Stepfan Raiford

    Ty lawson

  • cheifkeefshoulddie

    Ellis and Westbrook may disagree.

  • spit hot fiyah

baseline to baseline he might just be the fastest. Lawson and westbrook are in the convo i think. maybe bledsoe but his handle is so shaky that he slows down with the ball. maybe kemba should get some love

  • shockexchange

Too bad this isn’t track & field.

    .

    .

My bet would be on Darren Collison considering his parents were both Olympic Sprinters. But Wall is definitely in the conversation. Check the above race against Aries Marrett

  • Datkid

Wall probably is, but it’s not as if he’s a ton faster then westbrook or rose. Lawson is in the conversation as well as Ellis,Rondo,TP, kemba(maybe) and Lebron is freakishly fast for a guy his size.

  • LP

    1. Rose…2. Westbrook….3. Wall….. Honorable mention: Ty Lawson. (fastest with the ball) ………………..1. LEBRON- fastest without the ball….!

  • LP

    Meritt is the truth.

  • Max

Kyle Anderson is coming for that spot!

  • pposse

damn john wall was super serious. Idk what to take from it, literally a half a second before the race started Marritt was laughing pretty hard then by track measures he smoked him imo.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

well Merrit is an olympic gold medalist. I was just tryna show Wall is fast as hell. If you are fast enough to Merrit to even race you, then I think you have a pretty good starting point for an argument. don’t you?
    .
Also, everything i’ve read/heard about Wall is that he’s one of the most competitive guys in the league. His teammates were gushing about him just when he came back to practice because they felt he made them that much better.

  • pposse

no yeah Wall is definately fast. He probably is the fastest guy on the court, and its not like he was a full body length behind Marritt. I never knew how competitive he was until this clip, always just kinda remember him for doing the dougie before games, but if you look at the freeze frame that shows up on your posted clip he looks like he’s sizing up his comp while Maritt is trynna to have a good time. Much respect to Wall and his competitive nature.

  • bike

Well then, who’s the slowest? Pau Gasol?

  • http://twitter.com/niQknacks niQ

    Aaron Gray.

  • I think Kemba Walker says hell to the no…

  • RKJ92

    Brian Scalabrine

  • LakeShow

Collison, Bledoe, Patty Mills (3 years ago anyway) probably have a say.

  • Kadavour

what does Collison’s parents have to do with Wall’s speed?

  • Kadavour

Devin Harris is up there. JW is without a doubt fastest with his off-hand. it’s incredible really.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

it has to do with Collison’s speed. If i had to bet in just a foot race, i would take Collison, without hesitation.

  • http://twitter.com/AdonKay Adnan K

exactly what I was thinking….. besides for everyones info, Tony Parker was the fastest man in the league last year… what I mean by that is that he has the record for being recorded running down court the fastest with the ball, he beat out everyone else including John Wall…. they were using these new high end cameras they’re using nowadays in arenas to measure these things…..
doesn’t mean Parker is the fastest 100 meter sprinter, but it means he’s fastest where it counts, on the court……

and I put my money on Russell Westbrook any day of the week, the guy is made in a lab…. he has not missed a single basketball game since high school…. SINCE HIGH SCHOOL !

  • http://twitter.com/AdonKay Adnan K

actually no, you should always write down IN MY OPINION, you out here stating that like it’s fact…. go read my quote above to see why a guy who isn’t even on your list is clocked as the fastest man in the NBA

  • chainz

    truuuuuuuuuuuu

  • http://twitter.com/AdonKay Adnan K

You guys will be surprised at the two fastest measured players in the league from last season…. it wasn’t Rose, Westbrook, Wall or Lawson….. it was a 30 year old Frenchman and a shaggy hippie lookin Spaniard…

    http://ca.sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nba-ball-dont-lie/analysts-starting-track-fastest-players-nba-150028733.html

“”"”"”"” Want to know the answer to the age-old debate over who the fastest point guard in the league really is? Well, STATS can’t answer that definitely yet, since only 10 of the league’s 30 arenas have the cameras installed. But those 10 arenas feature some pretty quick point guards — Tony Parker, Russell Westbrook, Rajon Rondo, Kyle Lowry, Ricky Rubio, Brandon Jennings and the quicker-than-you-think Calderon. (John Wall, for some reason, was left out of this report).

But none can touch Parker in an open sprint, at least not so far this season. Parker has reached a high speed of 20.9 miles per hour in one stretch of in-game sprinting, easily the highest speed any of these guys have registered. Rubio is next, at 19.4 miles per hour, and the rest of the crew falls into the 17 range. Chicago has not invested in the STATS system, so we only have a few games worth of data on Derrick Rose; he reached a peak speed of 17.0 miles in San Antonio last month.

What’s really interesting is how similar their other speed and possession-related numbers are. All the above-mentioned guards tend to hold the ball for about seven minutes each game, per STATs. They each tend to run the equivalent of between 2.0 and 2.5 miles per game, though Rondo ran a ridiculous 3.2 miles during Boston’s overtime win Sunday against the Knicks. They all average around between 78 and 88 touches per game”"”"”"”"”"”

  • RayJr

Andrew Bynum on and off the court

  • http://twitter.com/AdonKay Adnan K

on top of that Wall had the slowest pre draft 3/4 court sprint time out of these players…. so this was all of them in their physical prime, fresh outta college pre injury

    1st) Rose (3.05)

    2nd) Westbrook (3.08)

    3rd) Conley (3.09)

    4th) Lawson (3.12)

    5th) Wall (3.14)

  • ctk

    Devin Harris

  • RickVanExel

    Oliver Miller

  • snasty10

fastest on the court i would say wall, westbrook might be more explosive, but wall is faster all around, Wall reminds of a rookie year Iverson

  • MeloMan222

    Lol

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

some most people do run down the court without the ball. LOL

  • LP

Pay close attention. 1. Rose…2. Westbrook….3. Wall….. Honorable mention: Ty Lawson. (fastest with the ball) ………………..1. LEBRON- fastest without the ball….!!!!!!!!! FACTS! ALL Facts. ALL first verse…..

  • LP

All that *blah blah blah camera camera camera* hooplah is nice but…….. you know where you can shove those cameras if they came to the conclusion that Tony Parker and Rubio are faster than Westbrook or Rose with the ball.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Wall being the only one of those 5 who knew where he would be drafted.

  • https://twitter.com/jasontichenor Mr. Wet

I always catch myself wandering how different the league would be had Chicago went with Beasley. The Miami big three doesn’t happen. Lebron could still be in cleveland, or NY, BKn, or even chicago.

  • playthegame

3/18 shooting?! dayum! yea he’s a max player for sure…

  • Shock exchange

Don’t know about fastest but quickest to get down and scrub deez nuts I dropped fiddy at the same_time so consensual to a degree

  • iFLYATHLETICS

Most NFL Offensive Players > NBA players in foot races, NFL guys are much stronger, powerful and explosive whereas NBA players like John Wall are skinny but very plyometric and no where near as strong and explosive as the NFL athletes….Sprinters are like NFL players they have a combo of power, strength and explosiveness.

  • robb

he’s quick but he’s not fast

  • Cameron

I’m going with Rondo as fastest player in the NBA. He should at least be mentioned in the conversation

  • Matt

Just because data doesn’t jibe with your beliefs doesn’t mean that the data are wrong. Besides, there are a few caveats when looking at this data. For example, I think only 12 or so NBA teams have them, which means that the cameras cannot capture all the games. And the data mentioned in the link also doesn’t say the average rate of speed for each player, which would be a better indicator as to how fast each player is with the ball when compared to top recorded speed with the ball.

  • http://www.facebook.com/starkpwnsyou Joshua Maria Peter Bautista

Off-ball, its LeBron James, Russell Westbrook and Monta Ellis. With the ball, its John Wall, Tony Parker and Derrick Rose. Off the bench, its Ryan Hollins, Nate Robinson and Doc Rivers

  • AndyK415

Dikembe Mutombo. You saw that commercial.

  • http://twitter.com/BEdotwater Orlando Coolridge

    You gon get this work.

  • http://twitter.com/AdonKay Adnan K

hold up…. you’re actually arguing facts here, you understand that right ? like scientific verified date… how arrogant are you bro, geez….

there are a whole lot of variables, but bottom line facts are, Parker and Rubio were the fastest recorded players in the league that year…. PERIOD…. john wall was left off the list but like I showed in my other post, he has the slowest 3/4 times out of the top dogs…. look at my other post

  • http://twitter.com/AdonKay Adnan K

you trying to imply Wall knew he was goin #1 so he didn’t try at the draft combine ?? cuz that doesn’t jive with the other stuff you were talkin bout Wall how super competitive he is … youre either backtracking or not making any sense at all…. which one is it ?

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

I’m not implying anything, I don’t know anything about those draft combines, how they times the runs or anything outside of what I just said. And it’s not impossible for an über competitive person to not approach a timed run against nothing but other times that you don’t know about. .
Also, I already have stated my opinion, which only was that I’d bet on Darren Collison. And that I wouldn’t count Wall out. .
EVERYTHING else I said was a relay of information.
    .
    Does that make sense?

Yeah I’ll be you’d take Collison without hesitation. You seem like a catcher.

  • Viktor Vaughn

Sigh…that was probably the intention of my response to the joke Mr. Duh. But go ahead and go f*ck yourself anyways.

  • duh

You worded your response poorly so it was ambiguous, and that is an objective opinion. You get mad over stuff like that? I’ll just stick to f*cking your mom.

  • pposse

okay Ms. Vaughn…how is Billy treating you nowadays? Good? It doesnt matter how he’s treating you!!

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

you should talk to your mom about how to spell Victor and get back to me.

  • http://twitter.com/AdonKay Adnan K

well, if that’s what you gotta say then it is what it is….. you know me, I bring facts to the table, it’s the only time I’ll talk…. buncha opinions up in here though

  • http://twitter.com/AdonKay Adnan K

haha, what r u a religious zealot to be going against actual indisputable scientific data…. nice bro, niceeeee

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

is an incomplete fact, really a fact to you?
    .
for instance, do you know if those times were hand timed? because if they were, your fact is more of an educated guess.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

8 cameras that collected limited data only represent a limited fact. it’s a fact that Tony Parker was the fastest RECORDED player in the league. It is not a fact that he is the FASTEST PLAYER.

    .

Wanna talk about representing facts, then represent them in a way that actually makes them facts. Rather than limited data sets that can very well give you an opinion that deviates from actual reality.

    .

“the world is made up of atoms”

    .
That was believed to be a fact for over 50 years, because of this same use of limited data.

  • http://twitter.com/AdonKay Adnan K

yea, let’s uhhhh…. let’s leave the professionals with hundred thousand dollar pieces of equipment, complicated, precise, proven methods, professionals accepted and utilized by the professional teams hiring them…. let’s uhhhh…. let’s leave them out of the equation because your opinion is undecided on hand timing……

I’m done in here… like the last thread, it’s like arguing against an elementary school kid who still believes in Santa

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

talking about the pre-draft times, captain genius.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

and have you even thought about how irrelevant top speed data is on a basketball court compared to acceleration? got an any acceleration data? that’s something that would be much more relevant.

  • http://twitter.com/AdonKay Adnan K

^ one last fact for you, cuz I just gotta grease you ‘fore I bounce….. pre draft workouts is the one and probably only place you will get the most complete and accurate information for a player…… you seem to have no idea how much effort and work is put into making these NBA and NFL pre draft workouts, you have no idea whatsoever dude, just clueless…… I’ve been watching pre draft combines for both the NFL and the NBA for years now, it’s one of the more interesting things to watch in all of sports.

If you knew anything about them, then you would know that everyone involved from players, to coaches, gm’s right down to the tech guys controlling the equipment and even water boys, everyone knows just how important the combines are, so important that a tenth of a second here or there means a couple of draft spots….. believe me bro, if there’s one thing you gotta understand is that the draft combines are the realest fckin arenas in the world where every gotdamn single dude is goin 110%, for various various reasons…… and not to mention the fact that they fresh outta college so they are mostly injury free and in their physical peak so the results you see in there are as absolute as anything you will ever see

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

That’s all great, i just wanted to make sure you knew for a fact that the NBA draft combine is conducted with these tools.
    .

did a couple tenths of a second make a difference for John Wall? draft spot wise, considering that’s part of your argument, that these results are so important that they make all the difference. Did you watch John Wall run his sprint? How’d he do? Did he falter at all? Was he running on a wood floor or a track? Was every player wearing the exact same amount of weight in clothes?

    .

There is so much more to these facts then just “he ran this fast, so this means that”. It’s not that simple.

    .

Was Wall not measured out as the best athlete in his draft?

    .

Was his speed time, that was .09 seconds slower than Rose’s really indicative that he is ALWAYS slower?

    .

Do these facts actually prove anything as to who the fastest player in the league is?

    .

Is Jeremy Lin actually a top 5 athlete in the NBA considering what he did ahtletically before he came to the NBA and the data they have on him?

    .

Are you familiar with other companies that measure athletics?

    .Like “Basic Athletic Measurement”
    .

See, the facts you are pushing as “facts” are only facts in that they were measured either once (draft combine), or a limited number of times (8 cameras in a few arenas). So yes, they are facts. But ultimately, since the data is so extremely limited, they would be viewed as factual just as much as this.
    .
I ate a peanut butter and jelly sandwich yesterday. I felt really good after.

    .

It’s a fact that peanut butter and jelly makes you feel good after you eat it. Because it was observed, once.

  • LP

Hey, if you wanna believe some cameras with incomplete data, that’s on you… I read the article as soon as you posted it, and it says derrick Rose has limited games on the system. Not to mention he was hurt all last year…maybe when the system is more developed, but right now, ill go by what I’ve been watching on TV and at the games…..stats can deceive, sir.

  • madhu

    Wow, ricky rubio?
