John Wall Thinks He Deserves a Max Contract

The Washington Wizards are 15-13 since John Wall returned to the lineup following a left knee injury (Wall also missed parts of his rookie season with knee and foot problems.) The young, confident point guard thinks he “definitely” deserves a max contract extension from his employer once the current rookie deal expires — the Wizards have until the end of October to make a decision. Per Grantland: “Have you started thinking about your contract extension talks yet? JW: ‘I haven’t started thinking about that.’ Really? The deadline isn’t that far away. JW: ‘That’s true. Look, I’m just enjoying D.C. This hasn’t been going the way we wanted it to, in terms of winning, but I think we are building something here.’ Do you feel like you deserve a max contract? That you’re a max guy? JW: ‘I feel like I am. I do, definitely.’”

I’m a Wizards fan but no. Get a consistent mid range jumper then we can talk. (Ted will most likely give him the MAX)

Well if he says it.. it must be true

  • The Philosopher

What else is he supposed to say?
“Nah, I’m not even close to a max player. But one day I’ll get there…”
    No.

  • spit hot fiyah

    David faulk probably disagrees

  • spit hot fiyah

nah, i’ll settle for the mid level exception, that’s more than enough

  • anon

“nah, I don’t play this game for money, I play for the groupies.”

It really doesn’t matter what he thinks, someone will give him a max contract anyway…

“That’s not for me to determine, all I can do is go out there, play hard and lead my team blah blah blah etc etc…”

Wall has max contract potential but this years been a wash. Hopefully next season he can get his mojo back.

I think I deserve Zoe Saldana.

  • aaron

    NOPE.

  • http://twitter.com/apowellAdvocate Allen Powell II

Exactly. Go ahead and negotiate against yourself young fella… Please.

  • Mike From Spain

My first thought was “NO”. But hey, I have seen worse max contracts inked. And as you all say, he has to push for the most he can get in the negotiations, that’s only plain good old self-interest

  • Cole

Well he’s had an underwhelming first 3 years, but if you compare the Wizards record this season before and after he was playing, he obviously makes a difference. Him and Bradley Beal, who has been improving at a ridiculous rate, could be the league’s second best backcourt in 3 years (behind Kyrie and Waiters)

but what does that serve him to do as the cornerstone guy of that team? i mean, i get it if he weren’t clearly the future of the franchise. he has a great chance to get max money, might as well let everyone know you at least believe you are worth it, right?

  • nhm

big fan of wall, but for now, probably in the not a max contract player yet.

  • DannyAingesBarber

    It worked for Joe Flacco

  • rkirby

Steph Curry, Kyrie Irving, Damian Lillard, Derrick Rose, Russell Westbrook, Ricky Rubio, Jrue Holiday, maybe Jeremy Lin- point guards drafted in the last 6 years who are better than the number 1 pick in the 2010 draft
John Wall is on par with Brandon Knight, Kemba Walker, Isaiah Thomas at this point in his career. Not bad company, but definitely not max contract worthy. I am a Wizards fan btw

  • rkirby

I’d probably take Greivis Vasquez over John Wall right now too honestly

  • playa

What is he supposed to say?? I dont know, but it would be pretty cool if he replied like this: ” I am one of better shooters in nba history,of course i deserve the max, what do you think ??!!” – napoleon’s dynamite style

    better answer

  • http://twitter.com/Jzakoni Sanchez

things always get funny when theres money on the table

  • shockexchange

Wow, Helen Keller coulda seen this one coming.

  • robb

ummmm no man, I’m not a big Wall fan but I do believe he’s better than Brandon, Isiah and Kemba.

  • roscoe

next thing you know MJ is going to expect the Exec of the Year award…

for the love of free shipping stop it J.Wall… you didn’t start in the all-star game, did you?

  • roscoe

    what’s that?

  • He is a max player for Washington, Bobcats, Kings and the Magic. Anywhere else hell no…

  • JL

Guess they don’t teach that in school anymore.

  • JL

When Wall wins the NBA championship then it will work. Otherwise he better shut it and start making some jumpers at a max level clip.

  • shockexchange

Sco Sco, Despite being blind, Hellen Keller was uber-talended. Even she could see that John Wall would be begging for a max deal some day. “Maxcontractitis” is an epidemic in the L.

  • TR

Not a franchise guy, but still the right move in that draft

  • sammyb96

The only reason why I would say that he is not a max player is because he is injury prone. Otherwise, if the Wizards don’t lock him up, someone else will.

  • JM

You mean the fact that he can’t shoot, is average defensively, turns the ball over way too much and throws his trammates under the bus through the media doesn’t bother you?

  • sammyb96

    Not at all

  • dannyb

In order to save time, SLAM should start prepping their article for “John Wall traded to Brooklyn Nets or Toronto Raptors”

  • VL1

Make the playoffs and win it first.

  • royce12

    Ninja Please..

  • Wall to Beal…

If the wizards had to lock up two players to four and five year deals it would be beal and wall. The dollar value is however more tricky Wall is currently not a max dollar player until he works out his kinks(jumper, being more engaged on d,Not playing dumb rec leagues and getting injured which means he screws his team). If he does this by next season I don’t see the problem as he will be looking at about a rondo deal as he hasn’t got any of the provisions to get more(allstar etc). This will give the wizards something to build on and actually make a move in the right direction-the playoffs as an 4th-8th seed in a couple of years.

  • Omar

If you want to give a max to a guy that’s a good athlete and defender but has suspect leadership, decision making and maybe the worst shooter in the NBA. He’s your guy.

  • http://twitter.com/_DFrance DFrance

I just think a guy like Wall who hasn’t really proven himself would be better served taking the humble approach. Besides, I don’t think what these guys say in the media makes or breaks what contract they get. If they ask Durant if he’s a max guy and he said no, are teams gonna say “oh he doesn’t feel he deserves it let’s lowball him?” If teams think he’s worth that money, they’ll offer it regardless of what he says.

  • roscoe

can you re-type that I can’t seem to read what you wrote?

  • roscoe

    what?!

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

you are probably right. i just think with Wall, who is only in his 3rd year and hasn’t proven to be more than extremely high potential and his situation, that he needs to convey the confidence in himself that shows the team they aren’t making a mistake on him. but, again, you are probably right. his opinion to the media probably has no affect on whatever contract he’s offered.

  • rkirby

I forgot Ty Lawson on that list of pg’s who are better than JWall.
