Tony Allen Says the Memphis Grizzlies are a Better Team Without Rudy Gay

It’s not the first time a member of the Memphis Grizzlies has said the team is now better following the Rudy Gay blockbuster trade to Toronto. The Grizz have won 14 of their last 15 games, and Tony Allen states the obvious (while hilariously referring to Rudy Gay as “the guy that we traded.”) Per Hoopsworld (via Sportando): “When asked why the Memphis Grizzlies have been playing better in recent weeks, Tony Allen had this to say: ‘Well, I just think we turned into the team that we were two years ago, without the guy that we traded. Obviously, we’ve made some additions, but for the most part we’re the same team from that 2010-11 season. Just Grit and Grind, in and out basketball. Everybody playing hard, playing together.’”

    he is correct

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

    they really are

  • RayJr

Damn that was cold. But of course he’s going to say that and if they lost 14 out of 15 he would be saying that it was a bad trade.

Rudy seems like a pretty nice kid, no need to crap on him like that. Not even disputing that they’re playing better, it’s a fact, but say his name at least. Unless there was some friction I don’t know.

  • nhm

*thump** there goes rudy under the bus

It’s pretty interesting how they play so much better. It doesn’t make sense because Gay has a ton of talent and doesn’t seem like a diva. Oh well.

  • Anthony Dixon

They may be better now but they will miss him in the playoffs.

  • Emerson

It makes sense that they are playing better because their team is now better built for the style they play.

Rudy was the most talented guy on the team but it doesn’t really matter when you don’t play a style that extenuates those strengths. They got the crappier end of the trade in terms of talent, but they get better because they lose a player that wasn’t really fitting into their system and a gain a couple that do.

  • Emerson

    absolutely true

  • spit hot fiyah

true, is not like he asked out or left as a FA

  • Dagger

I think he’s right, but it’s worth remembering that Memphis has had the third-easiest schedule in the league since the trade.

And yes, a guy who makes his team worse while he’s on the court is exactly the kind of player to whom Colangelo would offer a huge extension.

  • MUBWAR

what did rudy ever do to deserve this? im not sayin cause im raptors fan, but in the 6 seasons rudy played in the league i havent seen a single diva ish moment from him. so just chill and enjoy ur 15 games win steak(if we ignore that mia beat down)

  • Dagger

Gay said Derozan was the best SG he ever played with, and Allen took exception. So there is some (ridiculous) friction.

  • Name

I tweeted Tony Allen a few weeks ago asking him why he was mad at Rudy or something like that, and he just went nuts lol

  • danpowers

so what? the grizzlies are a better team without him, the raptors are a better team with him. win win situation

  • bobo

Their game vs Miami was very close till the end… Rudy said he had never played with a good SG , openly insulting tony. Then, he said he missed nothing about Memphis. Then, he back pettled and admitted he was hurt that new ownership traded him from a playoff team. That’s what Rudy dis

remember that Mayo got thrown under the bus last year. AI got thrown under the bus when he left too. Same for Pau, Abdur-Rahim, and every other player the Grizzlies bungled during their illustrious history.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=660600032 Tavoris Sinclair

Allen got mad at that? Does he even qualify as a shooting guard – since he can’t shoot?

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=660600032 Tavoris Sinclair

they’re gonna miss Wayne Ellington more when nobody can hit a jump shot

  • Hoops@Hamm

Rudy Gay was a no-defense playing ball hog. High volume shooter with low percentage of makes. Nobody is throwing him under the bus. He was a cry baby. He was the most talented kid on a UConn team that lost to George Mason. He’s not a killer. Send him somewhere where like Toronto(not like they’ll make the playoffs anytime soon). Tony is absolutely right, the Grizz are a better team without him, just like they were in 2011.

  • MUBWAR

    loooooooooooooooooooool dude that was harsh

  • Hoops@Hamm

Looks and sounds like people listen to Magic Johnson way too much on that wack ESPN pre-game show. Right now the Grizz sit 3rd in the West behind the Thunder and Spurs. Nobody mentions that since Rudy left town, this team is only giving up 85 points a game. Two all-NBA defenders on the floor with Tony Allen and Tay Prince. Defense baby, Grit, Grind.

  • Anthony Dixon

yup.. i do want them to succeed though but you need shooters… They do have daye though.

  • Hoops@Hamm

Beat down by Miami??? Last I checked my Grizz held Lebron to his worst field goal percentage in a long time, we talking seasons. Battier(former Grizz) made plays and you take your hat off to that. Two of the last 3 meetings with Miami, the Grizz have blown Miami out. Once last March in South Beach, and once this season in Memphis.

  • KoloradoKobe

Since they got rid of Rudy, the Griz have slowed their pace, but increased their FG%…that’s pretty much the Rudy gay effect right there.
    .
I feel for the true Raptor fans who understand how bad that trade really is. Colangelo seemed like he was banking on Toronto fans not being smart hoopheads and just looking for a big flashy name. They’re going to be stuck in mediocrity for a long time with the way their GM handles contracts.

  • jakethesnake

mia beatdown is a wrong-headed, pathetic excuse at a diss, congrats. i used to love reading the comments here, but lately, not so much.

rudy didn’t do anything wrong when he was here, and maybe tony should have just kept his mouth shut. the fact is, he made this team worse. consistently. day in and day out.

  • jakethesnake

young big, solid defensive-minded vet, length and youth on the perimeter for 80 million dollar chucker. yeah, memphis got the crappier end of the trade.

what happened to the smart basketball discussion on this site?

go ahead, boo me, this place sucks now.

  • jakethesnake

how did pau get thrown under the bus? AI (my all-time favorite player) was a disaster here, and turned his back on the team. mayo didn’t get thrown under the bus by the players, but the brass DID treat him like crap.

    explain, please. show your work.

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ Nick Tha Quick

He’s talking about Haddadi. Why’s everyone think it’s always about Rudy.

  • jakethesnake

i don’t know when, but they stopped being interested in the truth here. a damn shame, really.

Who would have thought that getting rid of a 6-8 cat with all the hops in the world but would rather take contested 22-foot fadeaways makes you a better team.

  • http://twitter.com/apowellAdvocate Allen Powell II

Yeah, I’m confused as well. He must have been a locker room diva or something.

  • http://twitter.com/apowellAdvocate Allen Powell II

    Bawse

  • http://twitter.com/apowellAdvocate Allen Powell II

they had that the year they beat the Spurs as an eighth seed. But they lacked enough isolation scoring and long range shooting. Gay had issues, but he also had a ton of talent. Oh well.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Mike-Gilbert/100001749589586 Mike Gilbert

they beat the Spurs in the playoffs without him two years ago, of course that team had a lot more bench scorers

  • http://www.facebook.com/starkpwnsyou Joshua Maria Peter Bautista

I’ve heard of Tony Allen’s defense but he seems prone to defending former teammates poorly.

  • robb

    but true

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=660600032 Tavoris Sinclair

the rumors in 2008 were that Gasol mailed in his last 2 seasons there. That was part of how they justified the trade.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=660600032 Tavoris Sinclair

    3. Don’t forget Marc Gasol (the best defensive player on the team by a long shot)

  • spit hot fiyah

they made their best playoff run without, with him i don’t think they ever made it out of the first round

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=660600032 Tavoris Sinclair

    who? just kidding….

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=660600032 Tavoris Sinclair

they beat a hobbled Spurs team. Duncan was not himself.

  • Chennyboy

The truth is that Memphis is going nowhere with a shooting guard like tony Allen they must get rid of him quick and try picking up someone’s free agency this post season. I say they pick up monta Ellis of even take back mayo

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=660600032 Tavoris Sinclair

it’s really just him seeing how many fouls he can get away with. Tony Allen is the only dude in the NBA who can get away with that Derek Harper stuff.

  • Matt

The Grizzlies are using Marc Gasol at the high post much more often now, which is great. Marc is, in my opinion, the best player in the league at the high post.

  • The Philosopher

He ran his mouth to the press too much, for a guy who wasn’t “that guy”.
    Bad politics.
