David Stern Supports Jason Collins Coming Out as Gay

After the news broke this morning, Jason Collins appears to have the support of the NBA family. Commissioner David Stern released the following statement: “As Adam Silver and I said to Jason, we have known the Collins family since Jason and Jarron joined the NBA in 2001 and they have been exemplary members of the NBA family. Jason has been a widely respected player and teammate throughout his career and we are proud he has assumed the leadership mantle on this very important issue.”

Stern has to support this. If he doesn’t, it would be a quagmire.

he is on his way out anyway

It takes a lot more guts to admit you are a Washington Wizard than to admit you are gay.

  • The Philosopher

    Exactly.
Why have a PR quagmire on the way out, right?

  • Jensen Carp

I expect everybody to “support” this. It would be news if somebody didnt.

when informed of the news Tim Hardaway was quoted as saying “ew”. (not true, but would be a funny sentence in an article like this.

    Damn.

  • danpowers

    tim hardaway hardly disagrees lol

So should everyone, it’s sad that a 34 year old man can only just now start being who he really is

  • darth vader

    Tim Hardaway “sucks”. Pun intended.

u think he cares? he has a vacation for the rest of his life to look forward to, i don’t think he is worried about PR. silver does

while i could care less if he gay or not, lets face it – Jason Collins came out the closet cause his already undeserving long career was basically over. Now somebody will give him a deal for sure, just for the pr smh.

  • The Philosopher

Well, people who are his contemporaries may care. People who are in his fraternity. People who advocate “progression”.
    Do you get my drift?
In my opinion, it would behoove Stern, and it would be in his better interests to publicly endorse this.
I can be wrong, of course.
Maybe internally, he does not care, indeed. I can believe that.
