Gregg Popovich Feigned Anger at Miami Heat for Resting Stars

The last time San Antonio and Miami faced off, Gregg Popovich sent Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, Manu Ginobili and Danny Green home (a ploy that cost the Spurs $250,000.) Last night, Erik Spoelstra and the Heat returned the favor by resting LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Mario Chalmers. While fans hoping to see Miami’s stars quite understandably stewed, Pop had a funny reaction to the whole thing. Per the Express-News: “The 150-mile drive from Laredo to the AT&T Center went by in a flash for Mario Dominguez and his 9-year-old son, Mario-Andre, decked out in his LeBron James Miami Heat jersey and LeBron James signature Nike shoes. The elder Dominguez had paid $3,000 for two third-row seats for Sunday’s Spurs-Heat game so his son could see his favorite NBA player up close. The trip was easy. Learning that James, the three-time Most Valuable Player, was not going to play against the Spurs was more than hard. ‘He’s heartbroken,’ the elder Dominguez said as his son buried his head in his father’s shoulder and tried to comprehend why he wasn’t going to see James in action. With the Heat having locked up the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference on Friday night in New Orleans, Miami coach Eric Spoelstra opted Sunday to sit James, All-Star guard Dwyane Wade and starting point guard Mario Chalmers, all with nagging injuries. [...] Popovich had his own reaction to Spoelstra’s decision to err on the side of caution with his key players, something he has done on numerous occasions in this and other seasons: Feigned outrage. ‘What kind of (stuff) is that?’ he said, jumping backwards as if hit with a stun gun. ‘Are you kidding? What a bunch of rummies. Who would think of something like that? That’s below the belt. There’s no place for that stuff.’”

    <3 Pop.

  • JML-G

Popovich is a hypocrite – maybe in November someone in Miami couldnt wait to see their hero Tim Duncan or Ginobili lol.. he should be more angered at himself and the fact that Spurs aint getting a chip in this generation anymore

you don’t know what feigned means do you?

  • fruizm

I was pretty upset as well! I waited the entire week to watch this game but it was a great game to my surprise!! So I cant complain…Ill just have to wait a couple of months for the real one!

  • Ben Ireland

Dude… Feigned outrage means not real outrage… Hope I helped !

Pop just keeps getting better at this.

  • JML-G

  • i_ball

  • spit hot fiyah

Afterwards, to make up for the fact that little Mario-Andre didn’t get to see LeBron play, senior Mario told his son he would take him to Disneyland. Instead, as a joke, senior Mario took him to an old burnt-out warehouse and said ‘look Mario-Andre, Disneyland has burned to the ground!’. Little Mario-Andre cried, and cried, and cried.

I propose we give him Shaqs job once he retires from coaching.

  • Hambone

” I even didn’t saw”…. Feigned is the least of your worries

Hell…you could give a mannequin Shaq’s job and I’m betting he or she does a better job.

  • Redd

That’s Pop for you, he doesn’t mask stuff like Spo tried to with his fake injuries, he just is blunt & straight to it.

  • RayJr

Sucks for the fans. I almost went to this game but tix were going for $300 over face value on reseller sites. Heat definately gave an F U to Spurs organization and fans for Pop sitting Duncan, Parker, etc a couple of months ago in Miami.

Pop rests his stars: gets $250,000 fine.
Spo rests his stars: praised for conserving his players for Playoffs.

    So obvious he doesn’t.
And so hilarious too. That’s why you use the dictionary for unfamiliar words buddy.

  • http://twitter.com/apowellAdvocate Allen Powell II

    False comparison.
Pop randomly rested his players at the beginning of the year with no real reason. Spo had the decency to come up with a plausible lie at the end of the year after an extended and taxing winning streak.

  • Caboose

    That’s fair.

  • fruizm

    hahaha youre a GIF master!

  • shutup

I’m just mad that the Heat won’t face the same sanctions the Spurs did.

  • Perry the PlatyPteranodon

    Oh stop it you…

  • shutup

God I hope your in grade school or something, or you were being sarcastic with the “i even didn’t saw”….feigned is a tough word, but that right there is complete ignorance or stupidity, maybe both.

  • shutup

Except it was the last game of like a six game road streak and the 3rd pair back to back games, so it’s not like he didn’t have a “reason”, also the playoff implications; are that the Heat won’t have footage of themselves against a full roster.

Pop had a pretty damn good reason to rest those guys after that road trip lol

  • http://twitter.com/apowellAdvocate Allen Powell II

While it had been a somewhat taxing stretch, the season was just getting started. Pop thumbed his nose at the NBA’s schedule makers and the NBA in general. To be clear, I don’t have a problem with this, I’m just saying that what Spoelstra did isn’t the same. He gave Stern plausible deniability. Pop said “Eff you and the horse you rode in on.”

  • shutup

Oh absolutely, but take away the facade and it’s the same thing; essentially. Although your POV is valid because most of the time, how you do something is just as important as what your doing.

  • LP

I googled this word first, so I would not get this exact treatment JML is getting.

  • RunNgun

    Pops is awesome… period!

  • BeenTrill

What a fucking lame Pop is..

  • dannyb

I want Pops to be my best friend and come to my birthday party

  • uqk

    its not random..
their next opponent was grizzlies..their division rival
    securing playoff home adv..

  • Caboose

Did not know lame was now a noun.

  • JL

You get the well thought out comments, and then occasionally you need one of these “bloopers” to loosen things up.

  • bill

Judging by the outcome of the games between these two it doesn’t really matter to Miami whether either team rests their starters.
