Jay-Z Confirms He’s Out: ‘I Will Always Be a Brooklyn Net’

He already put out a song addressing his exit from the Brooklyn Nets’ ownership group, and now Jay-Z has penned a letter to explain what’s next. Per Jigga’s website Life + Times: “Being a member of the Nets organization surpassed some of my greatest ambitions. It was never about an investment; it was about the NETS and Brooklyn. My job as an owner is over but as a fan it has just begun. I’m a Brooklyn Net forever. It’s been an honor to work with Mikhail Prokhorov, Dmitry Razumov, Christophe Charlier, ONEXIM Sports and Entertainment, Brett Yormark and all the wonderful people involved in making the Nets first class. My sincerest thanks goes to Bruce Ratner, who first introduced the idea of moving the Nets to Brooklyn. A thank you and deepest appreciation goes to the fans. You are the lifeblood of any team. The Nets have made their mark on the NBA and as they enter a new era, Roc Nation does as well; as we embark on Roc Nation Sports. Our newest endeavor is committed to building the brands of professional athletes as we have done for some of today’s top music artists. For Roc Nation Sports to function at its full potential, NBA rules stipulate that I relinquish my ownership in the Brooklyn Nets. It was a tough decision but as I stated earlier, it’s not about ownership. Congratulations to The Nets on a great season and making the playoffs! I will always be a Brooklyn Net.”

He has milked so much out of his miniscule stake in the organisation. If you asked people to name the Nets owner, a lot more people would say Jay-Z than would say Prokhorov.

The title of the article makes it sound like he’s a player who demanded a trade to a better team haha

“yea We used to ball like that….now we own the ball team, hollabackkkkkk….” – 30 Something…

“Ex D-boy, used to park my Beemer
Now look at me I can park at my own Arena”

  • Caboose

I’m still baffled as to why he got an Executive Producer nod on the cover of 2K13 and included Viva la Vida on the soundtrack.

  • Ugh

A song about selling a stake in a company is probably the most boring thing I have ever heard in my life. How anyone still takes this guy seriously is beyond me.

  • Max

He will always be a Brooklyn net.

Say what you want about Jay, but you have to respect his business savvy… Everything he touches turns to gold!

  • Comment_System

Which was actually prokhorov’s idea instead of his. He just took advantage of it.

  • bike

Title implies he’s gay along with anyone part of the Net’s organization.

Not that there is anything wrong with that.

  • da_biz!

dude. grow up. get some credit. buy some hard bottomed shoes, and understand that this man has SERIOUSLY transcended any and all songs. big things! that’s what Jigga does. he must be taken seriously. show some respect.

  • Deaye

You should grow up and stop idolizing people. He hasn’t transcended any and all songs – are you even serious? Son, get back to school and don’t miss your bus again tomorrow.

  • Cartel

Always be a Net???…When he was the owner in the early stages and they still played in NJ, his ass was courtside at The Garden watching the Knicks play!!!!…LOL

oh!?!?!? so you’ve never heard a Jay-Z album…..do you fools listen to music or do you just SKIM through it??????

Well, that reeled in a couple of jockriders, didn’t it?

If you feel like trawling back through the Slam comments from the last few years you’ll read I’m actually a sound engineer by trade. And now I’m working on a musicology degree. So yeah, I do know about music, actually.

Want to talk about listening to music and not skimming it? He has zero pitch control beyond a full tone, if he has a beat that isn’t 4/4 he wouldn’t know it, if he managed to actually match the metre of the sample he’s using with the cadence of his rap it’d be a miracle of musical development. He can’t find the key of his backing singers or the vocals used in his samples (the single best example of this is on ‘Otis’, where he slithers a lazy, slurred monotonal rap over one of the greatest voices in black music). On top of that, his raps are whack (yes, whack), lazy and endlessly repetitive. Oh, and his diction is absolutely lousy and his phrasing changes only slightly more often than the Beastie Boys, which is about the worst thing I can say about vocalist of any kind.

One of my friends engineered tracks from Kingdom Come. Jay-Z mails it in, and I mean literally, and has done so for more than a decade. And (newsflash!) he often doesn’t write the raps on the non-single tracks. He lets someone else do it. Because nobody actually listens with any critical faculty (yourself, for e.g.) nobody notices. As noted in the thread about the Nets song, he’s been fielding the same rap for years.

So you can talk about skimming if you like, or you can actually listen to the music and engage your critical faculties rather than sucking your idols off because they’re on TV and play to your low expectations. What have you got to lose?

I’ve got 99 problems but a fan ain’t one. word.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Executive Producer = “Put up some finance for the project and attached my name to it but likely didn’t do shit else”.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Phew, I’m not the only one who thinks the Beastie Boys are one of the most overrated rap groups ever and that their delivery is MAD boring.

As for Jay-Z… meh, never been a huge fan of his, but I did like Reasonable Doubt, Blueprint, and the Black Album quite a lot. His new song with Common Sense about going to Cuba was nice though. Really I just like that he went to Cuba with Beyonce because I love Cuba.

I can’t believe he didn’t thank Andray Blatche.

I believe that the lead singer of Coldplay and his wife are his daughter’s god parents.
