JR Smith: ‘I Was Trying To Draw The Foul Against Jason Terry’

JR Smith was given a Flagrant 2 foul and ejected from Game 3 when he elbowed Jason Terry in the face Friday night. After the game, Smith told reporters that he was trying to draw a foul. The League will review the flagrant and can suspend Smith for Game 4. From the Boston Globe: “With 7:06 left to go in the fourth quarter, J.R. Smith was called for a flagrant 2 foul when his right elbow caught Jason Terry square in the face. That meant an automatic ejection for Smith, and it could have repercussions for Game 4 on Sunday as the Knicks try to close the Celtics out. Terry had to be restrained by teammates. ‘I was trying to draw the foul,’ Smith said in the locker room after the game. ‘He reached in one time. I thought he was gonna reach in again a second time. I was gonna try to get a quick shot off, but they made a call that the refs saw. Not really much I could do about it.’ Both Smith and coach Mike Woodson insisted the elbow was not intentional. ‘He’ll learn from it,’ Knicks coach Mike Woodson said. ‘I don’t think he was trying to hurt the kid, I thought he was trying to clear space. But they saw it differently and he had to exit the game. That’s something he’ll learn from, and I’m going to stay in his ear and make sure he learns from it.’”

I’d bet everyone in the league has wanted to clock Jason Terry in the mouth at one point or another.

“He reached in one time. I thought he was gonna reach
in again a second time. I was gonna try to get a quick shot off, but
they made a call that the refs saw” trying to get a quick shot off without a shooting motion, just a swing at the face?

Hopefully he got it out of his system and it won’t be a problem moving forward. The way the C’s are playing, the Knicks don’t need him to close them out.

Does it really matter? Who’s going to mess with a player whose teammate is Kenyon Martin? The Celtics don’t have anyone who wants those kind of problems.

As a Knicks fan to some degree, I need to say that Knick fans need to shut the hell up and stop defending Smith’s actions here… It doesn’t matter who the guy getting elbowed is, it was a dirty @ss play no matter how you spin it. A one-game suspension would not be unwarranted.

Once a punk, always a punk. Dude get’s by with skills and no work. Could be a legitimate star if he wasn’t such a loser. He jealous JET made a bigger impact on the L with half the skills.

It was a dumb move, but give JR credit for walking away and not mixing it up. Two years ago he wouldn’t have done that.

Did you watch the NBA this season? Jason Terry did more talking than playing good ball. JR Smith is 6th Man of the Year. Mention Jason Terry and the first thing that comes to mind now is this and LeBron dunking on him. This isn’t about 2011 which is the last time Jason did something on the court worth mentioning. It’s about what’s happening now and what kind of players they are now.
