Kirk Hinrich Says Jason Collins Coming Out is a ‘Big Distraction’

Welp. After the Jason Collins bombshell, leave it up to Kirk Hinrich to become the first NBA player to put his foot firmly in his mouth. The hobbled Chicago Bulls guard, who missed last night’s Game 5 in Brooklyn, told the media that the Collins story is a big distraction as the Playoffs rage on. Per the Chicago Sun-Times: “Bulls guard Kirk Hinrich didn’t have much to say and called it a distraction, while Nets forward Jerry Stackhouse insisted the news is bigger than the game itself. Asked about the significance of Collins becoming the first male athlete to come out in a major sport, Hinrich said, ‘It’s really not significant to me. It surprised me but it’s just a big distraction right now. I was surprised after reading all that. It doesn’t really change what kind of person he is or anything. It’s just who he is.’ Asked what kind of teammate Collins was when they played together with the Atlanta Hawks, Hinrich said, ‘He was a good teammate, good guy. That’s about all I have to say about it.’ Stackhouse, who played with Hinrich and Collins with the Hawks during the 2011-2012 season, had a completely different take. ‘There’s a lot of things bigger than a game,’ Stackhouse said. ‘We live and die on a night basis because this is our job and this is what we do. But people are facing a lot bigger issues than whether they win a basketball game or not. Whether we win this game or we play a Game 6, or we lose and our season is over, this is an uncertain road for one of our brothers going forward, and I think that’s why we need to support him, not only as a league, not only as a union, and a body, but just as human beings. This is a big day for us.’”

Well they are both right. Lets just hope people don’t make a big deal out of what Kirk said..

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100003246310246 Jason Carter

    Hes right..who cares.

  • RayJr

How is this a distraction? Collins is not even on the Bulls or in the NBA anymore.

  • pposse

bc the media bothered to ask Kirk the question, makes it a distraction from his viewpt

  • pposse

I can’t take what Jerry Stackhouse says too seriously; he is also vying for position among the ranks in the NBPA. All he said was politically correct mumbo jumbo that will make the sheep (sheep are blind followers and the type that will write an essay about how great what Jerry Stackhouse is doing) follow Stack all the way to the prestigious head of the NBPA table.

  • danpowers

half the world as this coming out is even reported over here in europe in the 8 oclock news and many big newspapers

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Lol, Kirk, you aren’t even playing

  • Diesel

How exactly did he put his foot in his mouth? Dudes in the middle of a close playoff battle that basically hinges on him recovering quickly and coming back to play D on dwill and now he needs to take time to answer questions about Jason Collins? who has nothing to do with him, his team, or the team he’s playing against. I think he gave a great answer by saying it doesn’t effect him at all and he still sees Jason as the same person. Leave it up to the media to try and paint anyone who doesn’t give the standard ‘I’m so proud of how strong he is and praise him for his courage’ response as a homophobe.

  • radioactive

Not the most thoughtful response Hinrich could have made, for sure. However, there’s no reason to jump all over him, either. He didn’t say anything that could be considered anti-gay or anything against Jason personally. All he did was call it a distraction — and maybe it is a distraction to him. Not everyone is going to react to big new stories in the same way.

Also, have you ever tried to interview Hinrich. Even after 10 years into his NBA career, he does not really like talking to the media. He always seems uncomfortable. And while he is intelligent, it’s not like he’s the most eloquent guy in the league.

Personally I think Jason is awesome, and should be thanked for his willingness to speak so openly about his process in deciding to come out. And I’m excited to see the support he is getting. But to expect every player who is asked about it to have the perfect soundbite ready at a moment’s notice is a bit unfair.

  • RayJr

The media always has something to ask players during the playoffs. You can’t tell me he would’ve just been ignored in the locker room if the Collins story never happened.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100003246310246 Jason Carter

Just because something is reported around the world, doesn’t mean the people that hear the news actually care. You cant speak for everyone.

  • FLIGHT 9

    KIRK IS RIGHT PERIOD.

  • The Rothchilds

His and everyone else’s answer should be one of dismissal. Yes this is huge that Collins is the first to do it. But if i was asked, my answer would be “So what”. The fact that this is a huge deal is kinda hindering progress fro gay athletes. It should be viewed with the same mentality as someone saying “I love the vagine!”

It seems kirk is saying, “I don’t care if he’s gay, that doesn’t affect me. The huge reaction from the media, on the other hand, does”

  • Scottttt

See pposse regarding “sheep”…if you can lift your head away from the herd.

  • JonB

Stackhouse speaking like a true ringless vet. “There’s a lot of things bigger than a game”

  • LP

Anything unsupportive anybody says about this subject will be taken the wrong way. Guarandamnteed.

  • http://twitter.com/FranklinNittany DEVIL IN THE DEETS

Apparently Kirk can’t quit going over his memories of Jason in the Hawks locker room. Every glance, every time Kirk walked by without a towel, was Jason saving something for later? Poor Kirk can’t even focus on his team’s playoff elimination game. Maybe it’s all the free time he has sitting on the bench with that big bruise on his calf.

  • clancy

Did he say “big distraction” as the headline states? Because the word distraction isn’t even quoted by the Sun-Times article cited, nor is the question that drew that response included. He certainly didn’t take the opportunity to express undying support for the cause, but the headline makes it seem like he is disapproving. All I got from the original article is that he doesn’t have much to say on the issue of gay players in the NBA, and that it doesn’t change who Jason Collins is. Not caring is much different than disliking.

  • danpowers

i cant but if nobody cared, it wasnt content of discussions worldwide. even you are commenting on that topic. i can understand why nobody on your farm cares tho

  • Slick Ric

Kirk is entitled to his opinion. What he said was not offensive to the gays so Slam shouldn’t try to be all PC by saying he put his foot in his mouth. He does not have to support Collins at all.

  • RayJr

He did and it is quoted. Read it again.

  • roger rogers

    well said

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100003246310246 Jason Carter

My apologies, I didnt realize how much J Collins being gay would consume you..good luck with that.

  • rogerrogers

You cant speak for everyone either.

  • Seth

Yeah, what he said sounded too speech-like. A bit forced if you ask me.

  • pposse

yeah your right he would not have been completely ignored in the locker room if Jason Collins never came out. They probably would have asked Kirk the same normal questions they ask him, and get the same bland responses that he usually gives them. Insted Collins comes out and now Kirk has to please inquiring minds about what his viewpt is on a completely different subject matter..totally irrelevant the series he’s been playing and contributing in. That question was a distraction, he’s gotta worry about getting his body right, AND his mind right

  • danpowers

i know that it is not very common but sometimes actually a thought can be a smart thought even though many people share it. if you’d judge statements by the content instead of quantity, you might be able to contribute anything close to reasonable, too.

nice try tho, i like the effort.

  • clancy

You’re right – I see it now. But I still think the headline is misleading, as well as having no question context. His response didn’t bother me. Chris Broussard’s did bother me, but his clarification was respectful of people as human beings, and he has the right to an opinion. Kirk I understood more to be saying it’s not an issue he personally cares about and would rather not be asked about.

  • don

well it did consume the slam thread yesterday with close to 300 comments. consider it a “non-topic”? apparently it was.

  • AiRsMiTh

I don’t even like calling people out, but I have seen that you have commented on this story multiple times, and it does not make much sense why.

    “Hes right.. who cares.”

If YOU did not care, then why have you been monitoring this story? Looks like you have yet to realize J Collins being gay has consumed you for about the past 36 hours.

  • danpowers

b*tch please. did you count how many times YOU commented on that issue?

yeah, to me its interesting that somebody in the nba has his coming out as gay. now im just waiting for the first wnba player to have her coming out admitting to be straight lol

  • pposse

    too soon?!

  • spit hot fiyah

really well said, it’s like they are looking for someone to kill because he has a problem with a gay basketball player, as if they should be immune to criticism

Will I get any apologies? Probably not

  • shockexchange

The Shock Exchange wonders who will be the first person to lose his job over comments pursuant to Jason Collins. Hinrick, Chris Broussard, and Mike Wallace are vying hard for that distinction.

This is the most on point statement I’ve seen/heard since this story came out. I especially agree with your last sentence. Very well said.

  • http://twitter.com/_DFrance DFrance

Exactly. A big day for human beings??? Wtf is Stack talking about?

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100003246310246 Jason Carter

Oh so my words move you to stalk me?? Thanks for the admission ..Got it!!

  • initbruv

None of the things they said are fireable offenses. It’s not like they’re pushing hate speech.

  • Scottttt

I see you didn’t even attempt to raise your head. Not even close. I was commenting on your statement that said half of the world cared. It was only one sentence that you wrote that was in the post I was referring to, so I’m really confused as to the “quantity” part of your “I-just-got-my-feelings-hurt” reply. Your first post, not the 5 knee-jerk reactions that followed. Take some of your own advice and TRY to make an EFFORT to post something relevant and let it be. Also, the shift button will take care of all those words you might have wanted to capitalize. Sorry man, just taking the “content” of your post into consideration. You’re welcome.

  • Respect

    Thank You Captain Kirk!

  • shockexchange

Agreed. That’s why they haven’t been fired, but they’re skating on thin ice.

  • bike

It is a distraction and could be a factor for a team considering picking Collins up. Hinrich didn’t say anything remotely negative against Collins. However, there are plenty of people who do not approve of the gay lifestyle or gay marriage for religious or other reasons and they have their right to their beliefs as long as they refrain from persecution and discrimination. What the gay movement sometimes has a problem with is the distinction between tolerance and acceptance. Not everyone who objects to that lifestyle is a bible-thumping homophobic..

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Like Jason Collins coming out will distract him from the game of basketball. Are you serious?

  • Teddy-the-Bear

he was talking about a male athlete being openly gay in American sports, which hasn’t yet happened. Unless athletes aren’t human beings, there was nothing untrue about what Stack said.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Heinrich didn’t say anything wrong, but there was also nothing wrong with reporters asking him that question. They were teammates, after all. And please don’t start with the nonsense about how a question on Jason Collins will disrupt Heinrich’s focus and basketball play on the court.

  • MightyMouse

    Kirk Hinrich just outed himself.

  • shockexchange

Interviewer: “So Stack, what do you think about Game 6?” Stackhouse: “Ask not what your country can do for you, but ask …” As the theme from “Jeopardy” plays ad in finitum.

  • Diesel

Not even a little on thin ice. Kirk isn’t saying Jason coming out as gay man is a distraction, he’s saying the media coverage and questions about it is a distraction. Locker rooms are going to handle someone being gay just like the rest of society does – some will really like it, some will really hate it, and a majority will be indifferent like Kirk is. What I don’t like is that the media has sold this story as a brave man coming out as gay in the face of possible hatred and oppression from teammates and fans. Well the problem with pushing the story that way is that lots of people are willing to give their over the top support because it makes them look good. no player in his right mind that really does disprove of Jason coming out tho will say anything to the media because its a pr nightmare. So this leaves the media searching for opposition and really stretching to make indifference look like lack of support and hatred because someone’s got to be the bad guy right.

  • robb

I agree. People need to respect what individuals say and understand their opinions from their perspective and without the media filter.

  • Diesel

Jason Collins coming out no. But the media looking for sound bites about it from him and the rest of his teammates for the next few days, absolutely.

  • http://www.facebook.com/nick.jeropke Nick Jeropke

Completely misleading headline, completely agree with Hinrich’s viewpoint. It is continuing to view something like this a ‘big deal’ that it becomes a ‘big deal’

  • Kadavour

this is all fine and dandy, but what about the Chris Broussard response. I’d LOVE to see Slam comment on that

  • danpowers

this is a public thread man, when you post pointless sh*t expect people to reply and tell you that your statement is pointless sh*t. youre talking about a herd which is quite paradox coz youre pointing out that kind of people who actually tend to critizise society’s deficits or “liberals” as you might call them. its actually a characteristic of conservatives / republicans to keep things as they are (look up the word conservative) and to be less critical about anything which suits the sheep / herd metaphor youre trying to use in here quite awkwardly. thats like youre piss*ng on someones leg and try to tell him it rains

  • danpowers

dude youre contradicting yourself. you say that you dont care about the topic but youre leaving many comments here, proving that you do.

youre calling that expletive? dude, lets not get sensitive in here. you didnt prove any of your points and your statements are just exposed as pointless.

  • Guest

    well said.

  • melvo

Get your head out of your ass.Instead of bowing down to Collins and praising him for the sake of helping their own reputations, Hinrich just told the damn truth. What are you reading?

  • melvo

We’d have a whole different problem if Hinrich got released/suspended for saying it doesn’t really matter to him and that he still thinks Collins is a good guy…

  • http://twitter.com/trueballer4lif1 Melvin flynt

This guy Collins sucks.. Smh, just looking for attention stay in closet man why should be praised now! For what!

  • melvo

The f**k? You call this an article? Your name isn’t shown, but that sucks that you would throw Kirk under the bus for having the most neutral and realistic response to this news.

  • http://twitter.com/trueballer4lif1 Melvin flynt

Who cares about him he’s trash and gay!

  • http://twitter.com/trueballer4lif1 Melvin flynt

Teddy the bear. U gay !

  • http://twitter.com/trueballer4lif1 Melvin flynt

See how all this bs has the world so wrapped up in it! So wack..

  • pposse

yeah but it all gets lost, or loses meaning to me as soon as he so cleverly (imo) adds “…not only as a union, and a body..” the whole quote would have been gold if he never said that. Because of those 7 words i only see him using this whole circumstance for political gain; and as a result he is just another politician.

  • pposse

    haha

  • pposse

can’t wait to hear what that goofball Rob Parker has to say about all this.

  • shockexchange

A de facto co-sign, for the Shock Exchange! Like he said, be quiet because nothing positive is going to come out of it … unless of course, you’re Jerry Stackhouse.

  • pposse

maybe. All i know is if someone asked me a question about Jason Collins, i would be inclined to think that they are looking for something juicy to quote me on. If thats where Kirk is coming from which i’m led to believe, then yeah i think its a distraction. Its the playoffs, people get emotional.

Also, this is all hypothetical, but maybe Kirk and the bulls or any team for that matter is just like “i could give two shi*s about Jason and what he is, you SHOULD be asking about me and MY team, we’re over here going for a championship”

Look at Lebron, he turned his phone off, no distractions just tunnel vision focus.

  • shockexchange

    Agreed.

  • shockexchange

Not sure about Rob Parker, but the Shock Exchange is certain that the media is frantically trying to get a quote from Delonte West. Whoever gets that story is gonna get a promotion.

  • pposse

jim rome and delonte have a good working relationship, my bet is on jim rome getting that promotion and exclusive interview. Delonte will be like “planes, trains automobiles, Jason better get me my donuts!”

  • idc

Why? This isn’t a life or death issue. As I’m writing this, there are innocent people dying from drone strikes and war. We have the luxury of being able to make a big deal about a guy’s sexuality. It’s not too soon to make fun of those who make such things a big deal. Not with all the real problems this world has. Forgive me if I don’t consider this a top 1000 serious issue in the world today.

If collins was an actual star if the L maybe this whole story would mean something. Having gay players in sports is nothing new. Having one come out ? Yeah its different but one has to figure thete are more out there. I dont see him any differently he is not a hero at all. Lol he waited to the end of his career. If a team fails to pick him up there are more legitimate reasons than his orientation to pass him over. Butaybe now this solidifies his chances now because the media will provide cover fire in the event he doexnt get picked up. Not saying these are his intentions but this very much a reality due to his “coming out.”

  • Roy Blumenfeld

What’s wrong with what Kirk Hindrich said? He essentially said it doesn’t change his view on Jason as a player or a teammate. As a player on a playoff team it’s clear where Hindrich’s head is and I think what he means is that he’d prefer people focus on that. While I think he missed the significance of the announcement, it is hardly a “foot-in-mouth” offense. Chris Broussard on the other hand…

  • http://twitter.com/AjpDos Allen Powell

If someone says “no one cares” when millions of people do care than their comment is asinine. A better response would have been “I don’t want to hear about this.” That would have been honest at least

If Tim Tebow was shunned for his Christian faith and this guy was made a hero for admitting his sexual orientation there is something dreadfully wrong in our society. People rejoice over any counter shot to religion that does not condone homosexuality and do so as bigotedly as we Believers supposedly do in the opposite situation. And now we have to walk on egg shells and kerp mum for people because of stuff like this. That is wack too.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

How the actual f*ck is the world turning out to be heterophobic? Are you stupid? Like actually, are you legitimately not smart? Because the only other scenario is that ignorant as sh!t. Ho1y f*ck, I’ve heard it all now.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

is that you’re* ignorant as sh!t.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

So you’re telling me if the Bulls lose, it’ll be because they couldn’t focus due to being asked questions about Jason Collins? What the actual f*ck are you talking about?

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Judging by your other comments below, it seems to me that you’re the ONLY one who’s being defensive about this story. It’s amazing that you’re more touchy and defensive than 1) actual gay people, 2) Jason Collins, and 3) Anyone who supports Jason Collins. Yeah, it was a stupid headline by SLAM, but the only one making a big deal and feigning outrage is you.

Probably the stupidest comment in SLAM’s history. Try and put yourself in someone else’s shoes for once.

  • Diesel

Who’s being touchy? Judging by the 100+ likes and most of the other comments on the board I’m not the ONLY one who feels that way.

  • Lorne

Well I did. A few others as well. I guess that makes you more noble than us lmao.

  • Max

    Good for you.
IMO alot of these basketball memes suck a$$.

  • hillbilly

Seconded. This is nothing compared to what Broussard said following Jason’s announcement. He made a blanket statement of condemnation against ALL homosexuals based on his personal beliefs as a Christian (uh-oh!). So, yeah…it’s going to be pretty interesting to see how ESPN deals with the inevitable backlash on this one.

  • jeulz.

You are trying to say that being bombarded with questions that have nothing to do with what you are actually trying to accomplish during the playoffs won’t be a distraction? You wouldn’t be suggesting that if it weren’t about an issue you are passionate about, which makes your point hard to take seriously. It’s almost like you are slightly offended by Kirk’s response and that’s a problem. He is not the first or last NBA player to express annoyance at being asked questions during the playoffs that have nothing to do with his team or series. This is the first time, however, that you’ve taken up this whole “it won’t be a distraction” stance. So what if this isn’t important to him? Who do you think you are that you get to decide how he should react? As long as he isn’t being hateful, you shouldn’t have a strong opinion about his reaction.

  • idc

Thanks for explaining to us that athletes are human beings. We honestly weren’t sure…Anyway, I think what Dfrance was insinuating was that Stack, though his intentions were good, made himself sound a little cheesy by going over the top with that line. He clearly was speaking generally by stating a “great day for human beings”, not just athletes. When put in perspective, I just find it hard to believe that the millions of people around the world who are watching their children starve to death, ducking bombs, or avoiding landmines care much about who a rich American pro athlete prefers to sleep with. It’s not wrong to acknowledge this.

  • initbruv

You know what else is wack? Not admitting that society left you behind. You guys don’t have to walk on egg shells. Say whatever you like. But if it has anything to do with gays being lesser human beings or sinners or any of that sh*t then you can expect the civilized portion of the nation to come back at you. Stop you’re Christian whining.

  • initbruv

What is the right way to take unsupportive reactions to this story?

  • http://twitter.com/_DFrance DFrance

And how is that a big day for human beings? In the grand scheme of things, this announcement was very small and very low on the totem pole of what “all human beings” care about. I’m all for him throwing his support behind Collins, but he overdid it.

  • Diesel

Who said that? U have no point to make but u feel like u need to say something so ur reaching and turning my valid point to an absurd extreme. Ur comments r just stupid. Move on

When they throw the article in your face obviously people will comment…..I can care less about Collins. He’s not a Bull so I don’t care about anythig about him. who he bangs, he he plays for, how good he is, nothing. Go Bulls!!! That’s all that matters to me in the NBA!

  • Mike Acuna

I could care less about Collins before this story and I can care less about Collins after this story. All I care about in the NBA is the Chicago Bulls, since he has nothing to do with them, I could care less who he bangs, who he plays for, how long he’s played, how good he is, nothing!!! Bulls need to get this win tomorrow!!!!! C’mon Capt Kirk, get your body right, Bulls need your Defense! Go Bulls!!!!

  • initbruv

What does that mean? You can’t respond to other people’s opinions? Everyone is entitled to an opinion, and then they should expect to have that opinion challenged when they state it.

  • LP @ThisisEther

Take the Hinrich story, for instance…He just said it’s a distraction. Now, he’s getting negative press for a neutral comment… safe to say, his comment has been taken the wrong way by many, no?

so, Many non-supporters are just keeping quiet, nobody wants to lose their job or lose endorsements over a comment….

  • initbruv

That’s a good point. People do shut off conversation too quickly with these sorts of topics.

  • lindro88

I don’t see how he said anything ofensive. As for a big distraction, if he was on the Bulls or in the playoffs, than I’d agree. The teams playing aren’t going to be worrying about Collns.

  • clancy

“Shunned” for his faith is a bit of an exaggeration, no? I don’t care how religious he wants to be, but he was a little too “in your face Christian” for me. On the other hand, he got tons of adulation for it from people who felt differently.

  • http://www.facebook.com/bcbrookins Brittany Brookins

I can agree with I apologize for exaggerating, but he certainly was met with more hostility. He was not trying to witness to people during his press time. He went about his business mostly off the field, and on the field he mostly kept it to himself(singing and praying)
